Ryan telling the table exactly what's going to happen and then everyone ignoring him had to have ended with a big, old glass of "I told you so."

Except the likely outcome of doing what Ryan says is Ryan winning--the Karn wasn't a key part of the combo, it just slowed everybody else down & prevented others (such as the turbo naus player) from going off.

@@drewhoffmaster2969 The Karn actually did help me get to enough mana with Ashnod's Altar by turning my Arcane Signet into a creature to sac for 2 extra mana, which I ultimately needed to help cast Ao/Deathmantle and pay for the Deathmantle trigger. I don't think anyone would have suspected that, but I agree, the board was in a tough spot in deciding how to deal with Karn without tipping the scale to either me or Ryan. It's situations like these where not only good piloting is needed, but also having cards flexible enough to enable surgical piloting to happen.

@Ilvaldi
Жыл бұрын
@@BlackBullNDN you misconstrue what I’m saying. I’m saying that, yes, the Karn did assist me in winning, but it wasn’t obvious on the given board state that I needed it to win. Karn was stopping other players from winning, but it’s not always the case that Karn would be part of a winning line. Case in point, if I had drawn a Memnite for my turn, I would have won without needing to use Karn at all. So while in this case, when we look at the game in retrospect knowing what would happen the next turn, of course we *ought* to kill the Karn. But this type of retrospective thinking is pointless: you can’t apply information to matters where you wouldn’t have been privy to that knowledge. That’s like choosing to mulligan and then looking at the top card of your deck and saying, “I should have kept my hand.”
@BlackBullNDN
Жыл бұрын
I didn't comment on it being obvious or not. Simply quoting you saying it was key in helping you, not just being a board-staller, contrary to the comment you were replying to.
I'll be short with my report on this one: Ryan was not wrong in highlighting Karn at the table. Karn did help me get to enough mana with Ashnod's Altar by turning my Arcane Signet into a creature to sac for 2 extra mana, which I ultimately needed to help cast Ao/Deathmantle and pay for the Deathmantle trigger. I don't think anyone would have suspected that, but I saw the board was in a tough spot in deciding how to deal with Karn without tipping the scale to either me or Ryan. Ryan's board state looked as if he had the most advantage to gain immediately from Karn leaving, and it appeared that the other players could not capitalize immediately on getting rid of Karn without passing the turn over to someone else who could profit from his absence before they do. Having a 5/4 vigilance flying blocker/attacker didn't help much either. It's situations like these where not only good piloting is needed, but also having cards flexible enough to enable surgical piloting to happen. I want to also highlight and commend that at Punt City, PwP's Mike Saad did an excellent job at navigating the table in getting me eliminated and table-talking his way out of a bad board wipe to cinching the game against Ao, Urza, and Blue Farm. Knowing how to play through these complex situations, understanding the fallout/consequences you have to deal with if you commit to removing a stax piece, and figuring how to get out from under and evaluating if the risk is appropriate/best for you is key to games like these. It lends to both your abilities in sizing up the board but also sizing up the players you play against.

Heyo. really like the deck and interested in building it. Sadly, I don't have access to Grim Monolith or Lion's Eye Diamond. Do you think the deck is still worth building without them and/or anything to possibly replace them with?
@Ilvaldi

@@lethaljorag LED is part of one of the combo lines in the deck. You can probably skate by with running Lotus Petal instead, but you can also just run another ramp piece like Loyal Warhound (which also becomes another combo piece) or Knight of the White Orchid for both Grim Monolith and LED respectively. You can also sub in another removal piece like Darksteel Mutation as well. Either of these options are good imo.

To clarify, the proper pronunciation of the good dragon is [AH-OH]. It's a little bit like saying "OW" with less force. I did like how you were switching how you said the name constantly.

So, Magda is the red version of spellseeker inalla combo? (Except easier to disrupt)
@ellissanders2382
Жыл бұрын
Magda actually isn’t that easy to disrupt. If you have backup artifacts to tap to clock’s ability, you can keep responding to interaction at instant speed and win without having to cast any spells using academy/spellbomb/elixir. Not sure why they keep using the bolt line as it falls prey to counter spells and could possibly be exiled from the stack.

When Cal is attacking with Face Breaker and Malcolm, shouldn't he be making a total of 3 treasures? 2 from face breaker, and 1 from Malcolm? Or am I missing something?

Since it's from Kamigawa, it's safe to assume you should use Japanese pronunciation for Ao. Thus it's pronounced "Ah-Oh", or basically just "Ow".

Love seeing Charles go off with mono white! So awesome. Also that first game combo was very nice! Also t.y. for keeping the perfect number of 69,420 ;)
Since Ryan's probably a good sport I'll say what he couldn't. He told you so. If I were him I would've tried to convince cal to attack the karn so that no one benefits from it being gone and it would basically allow them to reset the game from there.
Protecting spoilers: . . . . . I still think the table was correct to not remove the Karn even though it likely resulted in Charles' win in game 2. The problem with removing Karn was that Garner was really the only one in a position to do so, but wouldn't be able to convert that into a win without giving the game to the Mad Farm player who was ramping to the moon with rocks. Garner removing Karn means Ryan can go for the win on the spot. The only question was if Cal could reasonably remove Karn & win, and I don't think that was the case since it would use the combat step removing the ability to Glinthorn win without excess cards in hand, and the presence of UwU on the battlefield made removing Karn even harder. Really, what we see here is the stax deck winning due to landing the right lock piece early & people not holding up removal to deal with the main combo line of the deck. Everybody was ramping & developing, and nobody was policing the table except Charles.
@marvel_imagine1713

I like your take on it and I pretty much agree. The only thing different I think should've happened was Gardner killing the Karn in response to the Grasp of Fate by tutoring for the Borgarn Hellkite. That way, he could've at least had his treasures and artifacts open to recast his commander and would've been the first one of his opponents to be free of the stax with no dauthi or Malcom to worry about.
@gbasso666

With enough treasures Garner could remove Karn and win at instant speed, in response to any other player attempts. Another option would be just tutoring a stax piece to stop everyone else from winning.

Not killing Karn is basically always wrong.
@drewhoffmaster2969
Жыл бұрын
Killing Karn without a win in the same turn is probably more wrong. Do that and you're just giving the next person in turn order a win. The Mad Farm player in particular was looking threatening with the rocks they were deploying, as was Malcolm/Tana. If Magda kills Karn, they don't have the resources to go off so either Mad Farm wins or Malcolm/Tana wins. Malcolm/Tana won't be able to win with Glinthorn same turn either since they have to use combat step to remove Karn and can't do the cleanup step win, and would give Magda time to win. . . . Ao winning was due to resolving a combo piece that the table got caught without interaction for. Karn just gave Ao the time to find it, instead of letting one of the others win turn 2.
@Ilvaldi
Жыл бұрын
@@drewhoffmaster2969 This pretty much here ^. There's also the fact that Karn literally gave me the extra creature to sac to Altar to play all my pieces and my Commander + tax on the same turn by making my own Arcane Signet a creature. It was, relatively, a "sudden" but inevitable play. And yes, you're absolutely right. If either player 3 players had the right interaction (like an Abrade, Counterspell, or March of Otherworldly Light for specifically the Altar), I would not have gone off there and the game would have continued under rising tensions (likely Magda might have been able to cinch it with the Copper Dragon).
Couldn't garner have just tutored for a helkite tyrant and immediately win the game since he had all those treasure tokens on his field and including all the other tokens on the field?
@Ilvaldi
Жыл бұрын
He no longer had Magda out when he had all those treasures. He couldn't cast Magda because he had mostly artifact mana, which was locked out by Karn. He also couldn't attack into Karn completely because Ao was up as a blocker and then later Serra Ascendant. If he tried to go for the Clock Of Omens combo after somehow killing Karn, he would then have to go through Cal's Spellskite which can re-target Clock Of Omens to Spellskite, thus stopping that combo. Then Ryan or Cal would potentially just win on their turns afterward. There was a lot going on each players' board, not just Karn.
Fools allowed the Karn to remain in play….hopefully they learned from their mistake.

Charles again goes untouched in game 2 and easily gets the win. I don't know why is gets consistently ignored. He has shown on numerous occasions that mono-white shouldn't be slept on. When Ryan kept telling the other 2 players what was going to happen, and then it did, really shows the board awareness.
@Ilvaldi
Жыл бұрын
I don't think it was lack of board awareness but more of them trying to find an opening without giving the game to someone else. Anyone could try to kill Karn, sure, but each of those decks used artifacts as their wincon a certain way and they needed to figure out how to win the same turn they killed Karn without the other player (especially Magda) potentially winning on top or over them or right after they pass the turn.
