Exactly. If Safin had a bit more mental resolve, correct guidance from coaches for some psychological toughness, he would have been a potential GOAT. He definitely had an all-round game to do it. Sports Psychologist help similar to what Djokovic had [ from his wife] would have helped a lot. Loved watching him play. He was the only one who could challenge Federer in his peak until nadal arrived.

Too bad all the players from this era were so dang inconsistent. Imagine if Hewitt, Safin, Roddick, Nalbandian, Blake and co were consistent and produced this level of tennis week in week out.

@@serenaistheb.o.a.t I think the inconsistency argument definitely applies to Safin and Nalbandian, who had the talent and arsenal to play on par with Federer and be proper rival had they maintained consistently their top level. Roddick and Hewitt on the other hand were very solid and consistent, but their game was not complete enough to be a real threat to in-form Roger.

Safin is one of people who made me really fall in love with tennis. Great and too emotional player. He really could burn it all

The last point were Federer was on his knees .... God damn we will never see something like that again.

Interesting thing about safin is that he did not have a perfect game. Kind of winged his forehand. Huge serve though...good touch around the net but not spectacular. That he beat The Fed at his prime is a magnificent feat.

@@tolendoi123to be fair everyone hits theyre prime differently. Wawrinka for example didnt do shit untill he was in his 30’s. Novak may be the goat but federer is the best player of all time. In his prime he lost to 2 men in the span of 4yrs. Nadal in paris and this match against safin. Everything else he literally won. 5 wimbledons in a row 5 us opens in a row. Never lost to anybody in his prime besides 2 men. Novak on the other hand in his prime lost to nishikori, querry, nadal, wawrinka, federer, tsonga, murray etc

Golden era for Federer. Safin was the next best talent at that time and he was often crazy/often injured. Safin and Nalbandian gave you tastes for what could have been had the next two most talented guys after Federer at that time been more dedicated, but it was a pretty weak era all things considered. The 2nd and 3rd best players before Nadal arrived were Hewitt and Roddick - neither guy is an upper echelon talent on the scale of a Laver, Borg, Sampras, Federer, Nadal, Djokovic.

Federer vs Safin is one of those great rivalries that never was. Safin had the game to take him on, as he showed in this match but so many times he just didn't seem interested in playing.

I feel like crying watching this. Brings back so many memories. Just months before Rafa also came to the mainframe by winning French Open 2005. Federer then won Wimbledon and US open. Such good old days.

Don think ppl realize how good Safin was, considering this was a 2005 Prime, Young Fed and Safin was able to take him to a five setter. Ppl say almost noone can beat Prime Fed but honestly I dont think anybody else could match this Safin either, barring Federer of course.

@@Dark_Voice hmm...….yeah roger became good in 2003 and rafa in 2005. now...….roger was born in 1981 and rafa in 1986 which means they have a 5 years gap. in tennis rules when we say...…."SAME GENERATION"....we mean players with no more than 2-3 years difference. nadal is not fed's generation. he is in nole's generation . they have just 1 year difference. u understand that don't you now ? by your logic if a player aged 20 is good and at top 10 and another player aged 40 is also good and at top 10 then they are in the same generation...…?

I've been waiting to be seeing this match in this category. For me, as Safin's fan, this is the best I've ever seen. Great memories watching great tennis. :)

I remember before this, Safin had won the Madrid and the Paris masters. He was looking incredibly good and you felt he'd reached his peak. Unfortunately consistentcy, his Achilles heel, did not seem to be maintained but what a tournament this was for him.

I myself am from Russia support Safin, I think he never revealed his potential to the end. With his abilities, he could have done a lot more than he did. He is much better and more talented Djokovic for example. Safin talent Roger and Rafa's I believe.

It's a pity how tennis deteriorated in today's generation. The only great players around are great grinders (Rafa and Novak) surrounded by lesser grinders (Zverev, Coric), lesser shotmakers (Kyrgios, Delpo, Cilic, Nishikori), lesser servebots (Raonic, Anderson, Isner) and the only challenger is an ageing great as old as my grandpa (Federer).

Fun fact: Weeks prior at the Hopman Cup, albeit an exhibition tournament, Safin lost all 6 matches he played including mixed doubles. He then went on to win this Australian Open.

This year's USO court speed was a travesty. The USO seems to be so scared of faster courts.Why? Do you want to see more players have a chance to win or just the same few guys keep winning? When court speeds were generally faster in the 80s and 90s, you didn't see serve & volleyers win everything. Everybody had a chance to win.

@@blistering2900 this wasn’t a choke in my opinion. Federer did have a match point in the 4th, but I think Safin earned that rather than Federer losing it. Federer also ended up saving match points in the 5th twice, but eventually Safin won 9-7 in the 5th

Marat is legend.... It's just a fate that there are so many kinds of players they have to face with many kinds of players within those G8 countries.... Not only G8 countries there are players from other than these G8 countries who plays so good that they walk out or lose their matches at the 3rd round, 4th ROUND and QF due to their injuries....

The longevity of Federer is amazing!!!!

@@nicolegreen6978 i agree nicole green rafa nadals longevity is better because he plays a more physical aggressive game than federer he has had more injuries than anyone yet he is number 1 at 33 years old he has been in the top 10 in the rankings for 14 and a half years and ongoing!! this is something federer and djokovic have not managed !!! plus clay is the most demanding surface i believe!! rafa nadal is my favourite player nicole green so i totally agree with your statement rafa roger and novak have a few years left! i thought rafa would be retired by now !! amazing longevity!!!

What he mean is that, both players try to go for the winner. Rather than play safe and just return the ball.

Basically, compare this match on a faster surface to the 2012 AO final played on a slower surface and you'll understand what he's talking about. Fed and Safin were trying to get the first strike in and end points. Rafa and Novak just grinded from the baseline waiting for the other to miss. That's why Fed-Safin were combined +18 in W/UE ratio, while Nadal-Djokovic were a combined -39 W/UE ratio. And the Fed-Safin match had more games, including a 9-7 5th set, and still finished in under 4 and half hours. Nadal-Djokovic had less games, and finished 7 minutes shy of 6 hours.

This match started about a decade and a half worth of semifinal classics at the AO. 2009 nadal vs verdasco, 2012 djokovic vs Murray, 2013 Federer vs Murray, 2017 Nadal vs Dimitrov and Federer vs Wawrinka, and forgot about 2016 Murray vs Raonic

2013 federer vs murray wasnt really that good of a match. he was in a horrible horrible form in 2013

What a player this safin was but he retired at 29 years old because he had a lot of injuries.He beat all the greatest more than once from Sampras to Novak

Satin is the only player that can say that he got his two Majors by defeating Sampras in one and Federer in the other one! (This was the SF, but it was obvious thar whoever came on top here would go on to win the whole tournament)

This year Safin was definitly unstoppable in AO

The two talented players. Love them both.

I still remember very good this match! On that day i started to watching it around lunch time, and when the dinner began my mom war surprised this game still not finish hahahaha

Imagine these two long-legged players you've just mentioned moving their huge angular frames laterally on a slick court, having to bend down again and again in order to effectively execute their long-winded groundstrokes an a slick, low-bouncing court. I doubt whether their serves could do the job on their own.

@@monchoman Wrong. People like you continue to make the incorrect assumption that faster courts meant more aces. And that couldn't be further from the truth. Faster courts meant more aggressive play. Players didn't need to hit aces to do that. Not to mention, faster courts actually put a big server at a disadvantage because they're robbed of time. On a faster court, their return comes back, skidding through, they have less time to react to be able to get on top of the point, especially if they're tall, like Isner or Opelka, and they're having to bend down because of the lower bounce. A slower, high-bouncing surface, gives them that time to react to their return coming back and get on top of the point, which in turn makes it easier for them to hold. And how about you look up how many matches involving big servers went past 12-all in the final set before courts were slowed down, and compare that to how many matches went past 12-all today on slower courts. Sampras, Becker, Ivanisivevic and Stich had big serves, and yet, you didn't see them constantly involved in long 5-setters going past 12-all on faster surfaces. But with slower courts, Isner and Karlovic have played a ton of long 5-setters that went well past 12-all. Isner has played the 2 longest matches at Wimbledon, on slow grass. And what's the result, people whine about the advantage set to the point where a TB is implemented. And nobody worried about needing final set TBs when courts were faster.

Arshak Hayrapetyan will be hopefully. Incredible: Defense. Consistency. Focus. And much more emotionally and mentally stable. For me. Imagine if he added more aggressiveness vs the biggest opponents.

Terrific match - compulsive yet so frustrating! And it was the first time I'd seen him looking tense and covered in sweat

This was Safin's best birthday ever

Even though Federer lost this Aussie open semi final to Safin in 2005 but I think this is his best ever performance in a grand slam. He fought like a warrior in this against a fully focused Safin.

Damn, what a clash! Love the all-round attacking tennis

But people on here think this kind of style is boring because the rallies aren't 20-30 shots and they weren't using the whole court. Better to see guys go out and try to win points, as opposed to seeing guys wait for the other to lose it.
