@@-theislander-5888 Well, this safin beat a really good federer prior to reach this final. His level this tournament was super good. Years like 2012 are obviously the peak of tennis where all the big 3 are competitive, but I would not say that this year was weak especially because of the quality match played at the SF. I would probably say the level Safin showed here was more than anyone did in 2021.

So many keyboard warriors in the comments LOL pathetic. Hewitt is a warrior, his never say die attitude got him to the final even though he had issues with his hip. The casuals only care about how many slams ppl have won rather than what a player brings to the court, what they had to go through to reach that point. Hewitt for example had to learn how to walk again after all those surgeries but he still managed to win a few titiles after. A modern day gladiator, a warrior, legend of the game and legends never die!

Safin was so talented that even though almost his entire being was internally working overtime to sabotage and destroy his ability to win, he still managed to overwhelm the mental battering, beat a a strong Federer, squish an inspired crowd backed Hewitt to take home the trophy. Very rare to see those with internal tormenting displeasure with themselves and constant expectation of failure manage to succeed. Almost unearthly natural talent required.

Despite what he's won, Safin could have STILL won more. Shame injuries and mental inconsistencies didn't allow that. He and Nalbandian on their day could toy with prime Fed and win handily. He had a great game. One of the all time big hitters off both wings. Fast, great shot selection, 2nd best 2 handed backhand of all time(1st is Nalbandian), great server, good FH and good at the net. His weakness aside from his temperament is going up against players who knew how to mix it up with slices and disrupt his flow, which is why he had such a poor record against someone like Santoro. Regardless, he still won a respectable amount and was always fun to watch. Thanks for the memories Marat.

Safin's potential is immeasurable, he is one of the most unique players to ever exist on the circuit. The most imprevisível and dangerous player i think i see in all my 25 years following tennis (I'm a tennis player) a combination of perfect technique in all the fundamentals with an immense power. He's the player than an inspired day can beat Djokovic, Federer or Nadal in their prime. In 2008 he was semi-retired bur decided to defeat Djokovic in Winbledon and did it. The only player to defeat pre-mono Federer (i mean, the goat, Federer from 2004-2007) on a fast court in a Grand Slam. And Federer was in a good day in that match, Safin just overpowered him. A remarkable achievement.

The retired Pete Sampras you mean. Sampras stopped training at 28 years old and wanted to quit. But was too sun age wise so. He played another 2-2.5 years. But he didn't win stuff those 2 years and was losing to many people, since was not training. He then took back his old coach and told him to. Bring him back to fitness for a final run at home. And won the US open at 31yr old and then retired. Sampras stopped training alot before. I think in 1998 or 1999.
