Lleyton Hewitt vs Pete Sampras Full Match | US Open 2001 Final

Спорт

After outlasting James Blake in five sets in the second round, Hewitt survived another tough challenge from 19-year-old rising star Andy Roddick in the quarterfinals, winning a thrilling five-setter, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, in three hours, 40 minutes. He easily took out two-time Grand Slam champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the next round, and next up was the then-four-time US Open winner Pete Sampras in a battle for the championship.
Could Sampras - who due to a tough schedule had no recovery days between the semifinal and the final - find the legs to defeat the scrappy Australian and go on to win what would be his fifth US Open title?

According to Hewitt he remained in NYC overnight and bad weather delayed his departure from JFK on Monday 9/10 until late in the evening. He got to LA and took the last flight out of LAX that night to Sydney and the 9/11 attacks happened while he was flying over the South Pacific. Everyone on the plane found out what happened after they landed.

Damn...i was so young back then. The final wasn't live on tv in my country. Woke up on monday morning to find out Lleyton had won in straight sets. I kind of feared that, and as a Sampras fan it was a major disappointment. It was the changing of the guard, even if Pete did manage to win the US Open a year later in a fairytale end. Anyway, 2001 was a crazy year. Just 2 days later, the world as we knew it back then, would be shacken to the core. Here we are now in the midst of a world pandemic. Yeah...we can only hope for better times. Cheers, guys!

It's funny how tennis evolves from one generation to another. Hewitt baseline play was super effective against 90s serve-volley goat Sampras. Few years later Federer rises and makes Lleyton(and also all his tennis generation) his punching bag for years. Then Nadal's left handed topspin became Federer's Achilles' heel( till 2014+ i guess) . Also Djokovic clashes with Fedal for years and now he also struggles against kind of his own defence combined with aggressive play from Medvedev

I have played both , both are tough in there own ways and special in there own ways . Soccer for a young kid is easy practice by himself . Your legs is 95% of the game of soccer . And in soccer some walk, or jog during the game . That will not work in tennis . Tennis is not as big because it costs more and is harder to practice . You need a wall or court . At this point in his career he'd had a few injuries and he had a more noticeable tendency to cramp in longer matches. He served and volleyed more frequently (even on 2nd serves) to shorten up points. The upside of this was that he was fresher for longer in matches but it did mean he forced net approaches when it was less than ideal. Against a returner like Hewitt that is a losing proposition.

the court in 2001 was very quick. A lot quicker than they play on now. Not saying sampras would win but they would not own sampras either, it would be interesting. Nadal being a lefty would give sampras more problems like Korda did in 1997 at us and wimbledon when sampras was in his prime.

Serve-and-volley-fast-court lovers, where are you? An elite baseliner confidently beats a top serve-and-volleyer on any surface And then, you, my priceless friends, ask a question, what would the outcome be, if the Big 3 guys GOAT baseliners faced the classic S&V giants on a "real" fast surface...? Here's the answer

Are you dumb? This is an old Sampras facing a prime Hewitt, the courts were already getting slower by 2001. Serve and Volley in a real fast court like the 90s were will most of the time beatdown baseline grinders, the whole 90s decade is the prove of this. The same way that baseline will most of the time beatdown serve and volley on slow courts like clay and this pseudo hardcourts of nowadays.

2 years later this elite baseliner will start a beatdown journey for years from Federer but i agree : put big4 plus Wawrinka&Medvedev in 90s and they are taking at least 80-90% of slams

Right. The elite serve and volleyer, who by the point of playing this match , had been a pro for a full 13 years......in an era when you were considered past your prime or peak after 25 years of age. Becker - past his best at 22. Edberg - past his best at 26. Mac - past his best at 25. Wilander past his best at 25. Borg past his best at 25. Even Agassi was considered a write off at 25......as he plumetted into the mid 150s of the world only to make a come back in the late 90s. From that era(late 70s to late 80s/very early 90s)....only Lendl and Connors were able to substain a level of performance beyond their mid 20s. Nobody remembers Safin,Roddick or Hewiit. Monolithic baeliners and essentially garbage can players who consistently lost in the early rounds to unseeded players in their respective grand slam arcs.

Fixed match from the very beginning. Sampras should’ve went up 3-0 in the 1st set and should’ve won that, but the umpire & line judges missed a lot of clear calls. Money was in on Vegas
