Wide body racquets were introduced in the mid 90's which were far more powerful yet lighter than the 80's. Rafa's racquet is another level beyond those wide body racquets. This was the worse year of PETE's career and he was clearly having an off day against a genius playing genius tennis, but he still came up with insane serves and volleys that made this match incredibly close. The 136 mph serve PETE hit in a tiebreaker down 2 sets to 1 followed a few points later by the on-the-rise, behind-his-back perfect-drop-shot volley Pete hit to win the 4th set was insane.

I agree that Sampras was cheated on a critical line call - and there are only a few moments when he really ramps it up and when he does he wins. But it doesn't matter at all - this matches doesn't prove who's best - it's more like an amazing gift that both champions faced each other on their favorite court and it went to five very close sets.

The serving from Sampras was just out of this world! The power and speed he sent over the net to Federer in that 4th set tie break was sensational ... hitting 134, 135, 136 mph serves with ease ... his serve was just unreturnable ... Federer couldn’t handle the power of the Sampras serve in that breaker. What’s even more astounding is he used a racket that he’d used since the late 80s/early 90s ... and if he’d have used more modern technology ... he’d have been thumping in serves at around 150 mph ... mind boggling! Never has a serve been so powerful yet so accurate ... Sampras was just a serving machine!

Charles Lo that’s the problem with being so dominant between 2004-2007 Federer best all the competition bar Nadal on clay. Now he is giving away 5-6 years to Rafa and Novak respectively which in ATG terms is massive. Now a race to the finish on who finishes with most number of Slams. I think Rafa has the better chance of catching Roger as he is a lock for RG until his body gives out or Novak beats him, as he is the only one with the game on clay to beat him on PC. Even Novak has surpassed Pete - RG title being the tie breaker to separate the two.

The game favors servebots as demonstrated with Federer's style and the fact that they made the Australian Open courts faster in 2017. Why did Federer win 8 Wimbledon titles and only 1 Roland Garros? Because his baseline game is not that good, on clay the serve is not so relevant. Due to the lower speed of clay, the serve is neutralized. No serve, no party.
