Official Rank for Screaming Suicide: 77 out of 117 Composition: 3 On my first listen, I thought the song was just Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Solo-Verse-Chorus; but now that I've had some time with it, I recognize the outro-verse as something Metallica doesn't typically do. I've also decided that there *ARE* time signature changes throughout the song, specifically at the end of the chorus. I like that the chorus ends with an unexpected hit that either starts on 3, or more likely, comes after a (2/4 or 6/4) measure. Memorability: 2 This song does get better the more you listen to it, but I don't find it much more memorable than most of their catalogue. It's not forgettable, however, so we'll call it baseline standard Metallica. Emotional Response: 2 I wasn't taken away by Screaming Suicide. I think it's important to discuss the subject, and the music has its moments, but overall, it doesn't move me the way their top songs do. It's worth noting that it doesn't have a negative effect on me either, which is why I give it a 2. Instrumentation: 2 Standard Metallica, all the way through. It feels more like a callback to songs they've already written than a new piece. There are some time signature changes, but it's not as math-rock as the stuff from Justice. I know it's mostly age, but Lars' fills are getting notably less interesting. It all evens out to be so-so for me. Lyrics: 3 Admittedly, I gave this one a bump up solely because I believe in the purpose of the song. James wants to normalize the conversation about suicide, and I agree: we should be able to discuss these intrusive thoughts that many people have. Poetic language isn't really present, and there are a lot of recycled phrases. The rhyme scheme is pretty basic, so the 3 comes only out of hope that we can all get a little better about discussing this heavy subject. Total Score: 12 Points Rank: 77 It is just below "No Remorse" (74), "I Disappear" (75), and "Escape" (76); and just above "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (78), "Frantic" (79), and "Wasting My Hate" (80).

You should check out my review of For Whom the Bell Tolls - I think my score is explained fairly well. The short version is that I think Bellz is kinda boring. It’s quite easy to play on every instrument, it’s highly repetitive, and the lyrics are amateur at best. It performs well on stage, but it doesn’t compare to the rest of their catalog.

This song has definitely grown on me the more I've listened to it. I liked what you said about the contrast between the dark lyrics and the more upbeat use of major chords, and I think I know why I like it. Unlike "Fade To Black", which feels more like someone wallowing in despair, when you listen to the story "Screaming Suicide" tells it's about being able to acknowledge and overcome those dark thoughts.

This was the third best of the four singles, but it is still one of my favourites. I love the dark, but somehow uplifting groove of this song. James's singing, the main riff, the first of the solos, and the spoken verse in the bridge. It has some pretty dark lyrics. "Born into the fight", "living a mistake". However, it is balanced with really powerful, uplifting lyrics, like simply "you are good enough". I also like how the verses changed from "then my voice appears", to "then a voice appears". It could represent a therapist, or a friend. This song feels like it is calling back to Fade To Black and The Unnamed Feeling, attesting to the power of speaking out about your internal demons. Never keep them inside, as they will only fester, and will only get worse the longer you keep them in. Screams Black Album or Death Magnetic. 16/20

I hear some death magnetic composition and sound here. 02:49 the riff reminds me a lot of "Where the wild things are" vibe for sure. But also, this few songs make me appreciate HTSD's riff variety even more. Great video man, cheers.

Composition: It's in F#, which, while not rare, is unusual for them. Riff-wise: The intro is lifted directly out of "Sanitarium" ("Fear of living on..."). I don't think I enjoy all the double-stops in the main riff and the breakdown/interlude riff, as I prefer traditional power chords. They could even have played it in dropped D, and used the D and A strings for those running chords. The double stops do leave the lower frequencies of the guitars open to fill in with bass (even though Rob just rides the low F#, or the one up an octave). The verse riff is lifted from "Trapped Under Ice" and "Satan's Fall" (by Mercyful Fate), which a touch of "Helpless" (by Diamond Head). I do like how it ends on the 7, resolving in the beginning of the following measure. The pre-chorus riff ("Better listen well") moves up to D, which seems bad-odd. There are key changes, but they seem to be less intentional, and more "Let's put this riff here", kind of like how Beyond Magnetic feels. The chorus riff ("Don't you ever speak my name!") is lifted from "Enter Sandman" (E to Bb to A) - not a bad thing in and of itself; it just isn't new. Drum-wise: Lars isn't doing anything that stands out significantly. The "Keep...Me...Inside" hits are lifted from "Some Kind of Monster". The tom groove is nifty, but it's also lifted, this time from "The Judas Kiss" ("Follow you from dawn of time..."), or from "Blitzkrieg Bop" by the Ramones. If I could use half-points, I'd give it 1.5. I'll be nice. Not blown away. 2. Memorability: It doesn't have a hook, other than ending every chorus with the word "suicide" - not something I would enjoy having the audience scream at me, especially if I'm James, and not doing so well emotionally. I suppose the audience could sing "Better listen well", or "Keep Me (Deep) Inside" (oh, my) but that seems kinda weak. If Lars ever played in half time, there could be a "Hey! Hey! Hey!" opportunity, but that opportunity was lost here. The tom groove opens that up, if they stay on it for a while before James starts singing again. The riffs are pretty unrelated, other than the main riff, and the interlude riff, both having running double-stops in roughly the same musical pattern. Musically, I wouldn't be able to remember which riffs go where, unless I study the song very closely, which is a problem I have both with Justice and Beyond Magnetic - more so the latter than the former. I can't remember which riffs are from "Hate Train" or "Rebel of Babylon" if they're not being sung over, and even then, it's still a challenge. That's the same problem I have here. 1. Emotional Response: I think this would be the appropriate place to say that this song has grown on me as I watch (or re-watch 🤣) reviews and reactions. It went from "I don't much like it" to "it's okay". It's "meh" at best, "extra-meh" at worst. I wasn't very impressed, and still am not. It's not bad; however, as a wise man once said, "I know they can do better." "Lux Æterna" is the better of the two newest songs, in my opinion, and that sounds like a _Kill em All_ ripoff. I feel like so many previous Metallica influences and callbacks can be noted because this song doesn't seem to know what it wants to be. It wants to be NWOBHM, but also Justice, but also The Black Album, but also the Loads, but also St. Anger, but also Death Magnetic, and also HWTSD. I don't love it, but I don't hate it; there are songs that still rank lower. If I never see a live video of it, that's fine, especially since it has important vocal harmonies, and I don't feel like Kirk and Rob are up to the task. 2. Instrumentation: I know "Kirk Wahmett" is a meme, but it was overused in this song in the first ten seconds. I wish he had foregone it, at least until the solo. See the Composition section for how I feel about the riffs. Some are okay, but nothing makes me want to pick up my guitar, other than to see if the riffs can be played with traditional power chords, or in dropped tuning. I do wish that, instead of parallel octaves, the guitars had played a third- or even a fifth-harmony; they wanted to make calls back to the olden days, but didn't make that one. Parallel octaves on two different guitars just seems empty, like the lead guitarist is too good for the lower three strings. Poor Rob plays F# for about three quarters of the song. I thought I felt bad for him on "Now That We're Dead", as he plays E for 90% of that one. As I stated above, the guitars playing those double stops leaves their lower frequency open for the bass to shine through (an improvement over "LÆ" - on that song, I can't even tell what Rob is playing). It's wasted by not having him use up that space with short bass runs, or even a small lead. The tom groove, while not new, is still welcome, and is another place Rob could have just gone completely bonkers, since even the guitars are riding the F#. Kirk's solos are still comparatively weak, as I'm pretty sure he's not actively writing them anymore. This solo was better than "Lux", but it's not a high bar anymore. It's not even better than anything on the Loads. In fact, someone pointed out that chunks of it are borrowed from Beyond Magnetic and a Deep Purple song - I think it's "Highway Star", but someone will have to fact-check me. I just feel like there's so much more potential, even at their age, than was displayed here. 1. Lyrics: A hopeful optimistic message in a Metallica song? The same band that wrote "Low Man's Lyric" and "The Unnamed Feeling"? What sort of blasphemy is this?? I thought this song was going to be "Fade to Black II". As it turns out, it's telling the listener to shut the voices in their heads up, because the voices are lying to the listener. I do think I would have preferred a metaphor, rather than plastering the word "suicide" all over it (and getting KZreadrs demonetized). I would like it better is "Better listen well" were followed by something else, like, "To escape your hell, to escape your hell" which would have put another lyrical callback in the song (and a callback to an incorrectly-labeled song from the file-sharing days: "Learn it well to be free, from the Valley of Misery"). I appreciate the message, as weird as it is for Metallica. I'm going through a tough time myself; it's nice to know that I'm not alone in the darkness - that even metal gods go through tough times. 2. 8 points. I'd have to check the master... master... list to know where it ranks. I'll edit this comment when I get it.

I enjoyed this track. Nothing musically groundbreaking, but I truly appreciate the message to open up and allow for people to discuss about suicide. It's a bit more constructive than previous songs that just wallow in it like Fade to Black and Cyanide. 12 points from me: 2s on Comp, ER, Instru, and 3s on Memo and Lyrics

I wonder if this song fails to impress people because their expectations for Metallica are so ridiculously high, or because it's ACTUALLY a mediocre song? Like, what if a younger band released this as one of their first songs, would I still be "meh", or would it be a banger? That's really the question for me. All in all, definitely not a bad song but I know they can do a lot better, so hopefully they will!

This is a great thought experiment! And really hard to answer because I have extreme bias toward Metallica. I think I’m leaning toward “mediocre song,” because I don’t think I’d enjoy it as much from another band. The mix is great and there are definitely some high points, but I think it comes down to the transitions for me. Something about going from the bridge to the final chorus didn’t work as well for me, and the lyrics didn’t grab me much either.

Didn't like it at first and it's definitely far from perfect but it's grown on me immensely in subsequent listens. Also, nice to hear a metal song that deals with suicide but actually has a hopeful, positive message. And man, I love the verse sections. James is absolutely spitting fire and the verse riff is just great, classic Hetfield stuff. That said, the "keep me inside" part of the chorus doesn't work at all. It's an awkward, clunky rhythm that just drags the song to a momentary halt in a really bad way.
