It's interesting how quickly dreams are forgotten. It's almost like we're not supposed to remember them.

My dreams usually involve failure of some kind. It's good to hear someone like Prof. Stickgold talk on this topic, rather than the cranks and quacks who so often spew their rubbish.

I haven't remembered a dream since Vietnam. Which may be a blessing. And yet, i never get disturbed or distracted with what they might mean. Another blessing.

I like to think that from pure consciousness that cannot look into itself to REM is half way that is there from consciousness to waking mode. From the perspective of parapsychology, during sleep you create your reality only to a certain degree, and strengthening that experience you come to full waking mode. And your waking reality does arise based on weak associations that are like smaller branches of the tree hidden under the crown, hence the dream is partially a thing of the future, you grow out of it into the waking mode.

There are different types of dreams. Jung spoke of Collective Dreams, from the collective unconscious. Then, there are typical, everyday dreams. I prefer Jung's understanding of dreams. To me, my dreams communicate partial truths of myself, to me. It's the emotional content that is important in our dreams. The dream stated was definitely work relating a warning of sorts. It does sound as if this man was/is over his head. This dream is all about his anxiety.

Memory, will, and the metaphorical ability we have of associating or identifying one thing with another, which I call intimacy, are all involved with the linguistic functioning of the mind. Beings with language are different from beings without language. With this assumption in mind do we know if animals dream? If I am correct animals with highly specialized, functioning brains should have dreams. Humans dream because their specialization, language, is suppressed during sleep. So the functions of memory, will and intimacy come out to play.

"are all involved with the linguistic functioning of the mind. Beings with language are different from beings without language." Many creatures dream and all have visuals of some kind, have you seen written book or something? Lucid dreamers say , you cannot read, I don't emember doing so either

@@vroomik I don't know of any studies. This is just a guess based on my belief that the linguistic mind, the creative process of language that we have all forcibly been indoctrinated in, has a large role in the brain's processing. Although it is not imagination it is connected to imagination. I believe we need sleep to rest our brains from this constant, creative processing of the linguistic mind. Our will, memory and intimacy are then freed of the task of confirmation bias and other delusional "understanding" or "beliefs" of the linguistic mind. They: memory, will and intimacy, are then free to wander and assess consciousness without the urging of the linguistic mind's intentions. Our imagination does the best it can when these reins are loosed.

What we see in our dreams are simply symbolic. And sometimes we see things that happen in the future, which we find no cause for it in the so called real world. Therefor it's a sign from someone behind it which says I'm here. That by itself is a proof for God's existence

Life itself is a dream. First we need to fix this problem before talking about dreams. One way to get out of this perpetual dream is to enquire "who am I ?"
