The revenge is sooo sublimely set up that De Niro didn't realized he screwed up until he asked the first question. At that point he couldn't say #### b/c the audience is on Colbert's side and he'd end up looking like an ass. No only will Colbert NEVER have to do another interview with Robert again, but he'll get mad respect from other talk show hosts, as well. 😂

It's a good observation even though these things are generally rehearsed, if not, scripted. Neither "harsh" nor "savage", but brilliant none-the-less! I'm convinced Joaquin Pheonix was "legit" (as you kids say) pulling from the Deniro playbook on his Late Night appearance. : )

You really have to have seen his previous appearance on the Colbert show to appreciate this one.

When a screen legend the caliber of De Niro is able to so easily take the piss outta himself on late night tele, you just gotta admire the man. He's played a lifetime of outstanding roles, and a short time of an even more brilliant one...denouncing trump. thank you Sir, i salute you.

You can see huge actors/celebs broaching social media in the most cringeworthy ways. See Matt Mcconaughey, Travolta. They don’t know how to be themselves. Deniro is facing the same thing but at least doesn’t force some persona.

That was priceless! De Niro must really like Stephen, because I've never seen him so comfortable on a talk show. Was Stephen doing an impression of him from previous talk show appearances? Nailed it. Definitely a highlight in Colbert's career. 👏

I have loved watching Robert De Niro. He’s up for a laugh so good at anything. Can deal with everything thrown at him. Great man.

Everyone must watch Robert De Niros first interview at this show (from two years ago) to understand the context behind this scene. Bob came in and didn’t say much. He wasn’t trying to be rude or anything that’s just his personality. Stephen did all the heavy lifting. Robert definitely has opened up a lot more since then.

Robert De Niro must really be a fan of Stephen. Everytime he comes on the show, Stephen gets him to loosen up...... A LOT! Anyone who's seen De Niro in interviews, knows he's always tight lipped. Way to go Stephen!

Stephen’s a real comedian and other talk show/chat show hosts are not (except Conan). Even if they call themselves that, they have no basis to back it up. Stephen has a long history of comedic brilliance even if he’s calling himself a talk show host. That’s the difference.

You can tell De Niro likes Colbert and does things on his show he doesn't do on others; he probably appreciates the fact that Colbert's humor is helping him cope with the disaster that's in the WH, as it does to many others which is why Colbert became the no. 1 late night show since Trump took office!

One of the first things De Niro says to Stephen when he first interviewed him in 2015 was that he was very happy he got the gig; he seemed very genuine, said it completely unprompted
