Rifling 5!

The long-awaited rifling video! I will be doing more rifling videos in the future, including ECM rifling. But for now this is what you get! Actually, my next rifling video will be a short, where I show you everything you need to know in less than 60 seconds. Hell, maybe even 30 seconds. Cheap, Chinese rifling buttons, grease, and bashing the button through the tube with a hammer. It will be ugly. Or epic. You decide.
MISTAKE at 0:30! The reamer was an 11/32"(.344"), not 13/32"(.406'). Sorry about that!

    I am pleased and suprised Mr. Serbu mentioned “strain hardening”. Few people understand the complexities of hardening different types of steels, which is very important when dealing with high pressure. The part he did not cover, and I would really like to know, is whether he does his heat treatment before or after the rifling process.

    Don't be stingy on the cutting oil; we always used a steady flow of cutting oil while broaching in a bigger press than your using for barrels. Klien Tool made many of our custom broaches and end mills. I'm sure they could make button dies and chamber reamers too and if you send them a drawing they can quote you a price.

    Approx around the 4:40 mark the cylinder made a few "jumpy" movements ...this can usually denote that there may be some amount of air in the system and only needs to be bled out. Also at the same time fully retract the cylinder rod and then check oil levels in the reservoir to be sure it is sufficient. Many times all one has to do to bleed out air is to cycle the system ... fully extend and retract cylinder rod numerous times and this action will also heat up the oil a little and also "hopefully" help dislodge any rouge air pockets and send it back to tank/reservoir (generally there is a breather cap on the oil reservoir to allow any pressure to escape). Operation will become smooth again. * being that it happened at near end of stroke/extension then i would definitely check oil level in reservoir first and top it up BUT remember only top up if cylinder is full retracted, else a major mess may/will occur. Of course i am a fan of all that you do and is why i bothered to type al this sht out, Sir \\\o7. Keep givin er.

    Depends on the barrel material and the button. I had 17 cal buttons that are only good for 2 barrels. Maybe 4 if they are stainless. I have a 45 cal button that's done over a dozen rifle barrels and still produces nice sharp grooves still. It also depends on how much work you want the button to do. If you want a 30 cal button to cut 85 tenths out of a .2995" bore it will wear down faster than if you start with a . 3005" and only have it move 75. Single point rifling is far superior to button and hammer forged. Look up the colonial Williamsburg gunsmith video from the 70s. They single pointed their rifles back in the 1800s and we pretty much still do it the same way today just with a lot less wood and paper shims.

Those "grease gun" barrels you rifled look like they belong in a version of that single shot pistol you designed for gun buy backs. My money says an updated set of plans for a GB-9 packaged with a barrel will be a great seller. Side note: I just seen a video on a 3d printed GB-22 that's a closed bolt version.

  • @13andsim

    This is pure / standard hydraulics only consisting of an oil reservoir with an electric motor coupled to a hydraulic pump that is submerged within oil inside reservoir and either 1 pressure line to cylinder (single acting cylinder with spring return) or if 2 lines going to cylinder, then it would be a double acting cylinder meaning powered extension AND powered retraction. Some call it an "Electric over Hydraulic" system.

  • @markserbu

    @markserbu

    2 ай бұрын

    @keithjurena9319 Are you sure about that? The area of the base of the rifling button is basically .100" square inches, and we saw that the force required is 5,024 pounds. P=F/A so Pressure=5,024/.1 or 50,240 psi. That's a HUGE amount of pressure, and requires a very specialized hydraulic power unit. Hell, you might as well try firing the button down the barrel with gunpowder (which I intend to try!).

Needs a 12v power supply, really crappy 12v pump, 2 leads , 3d printed mandril, a few other 3d printed things, 5 really small guage copper wires, and piece of drilled steel that the mandril will fit in (8.82mm i think). It will rifle the 8.82mm hole into a barrel with the chamber, throat, and rifling cut in about 10 minutes at 4 amps. Pretty neat.

    Are you sure there’s enough rake and relief on the rifling buttons, or is burnishing and expanding the barrel part of the intended process? Are the minor diameter flats of the lands burnished by the button or is that a reamed finish? I think your rifling press either has some air in the lines or some pretty elastic lines to flex/swell so much at only 400 psi causing the herky jerky motion of the ram. The motor could contribute by slowing and speeding up. The cycle time for that short barrel was pretty quick you could try decreasing the displacement of the pump if it’s adjustable to take some variability out of the motor rpm by decreasing the amount of work it has to do. I’m guessing it’s a close coupled submerged pump by looking at the set there so belt and pulley swap is probably out.. I really liked the video though, makes me wish I had the equipment, metallurgy knowledge, permits and licensing, shop… to do some similar things. 😃 I just really like help things run like they make their job look kind of effortless.

    How much affect does the muzzle crown have on accuracy? I have heard it's critical and it doesn't matter much...

    You heat treat before rifling? Another question, have you done cryogenic treating as well? As a normalizing agent? Would this be as well for 416R Stainless steel? Watching all of the rifling videos in order. Sorry it's been a long night.

    I just had a thought (probably a stupid one). Rotating a projectile through the grooves of a rifled barrel requires energy. If we consider a full lenght battle rifle barrel for instance, could we get away with rifling just the last third or last quarter of the barrel while leaving the first part of the barrel smoothbore? During the first 2-thirds of the barrel, energy would be spent on acceleration alone. The last third of the barrel would give the bullet its spin. Would we see a worthwhile increase in bullet speed at the muzzle?

    I used to think the finish of my taurus barrel was good, one day I got a chinese borescope and I saw how crude it is. Seems to be finished with low gritt sand paper. I have an old UZI barrel (the last five inches of a 16 inch barrel) and its finish is much better than the Taurus. Did you make something to improve the finish? Maybe a little lapping?
