Dear Breakerbroke, My Wife watched this video after I found it, fixed our riding lawn mower the next day! She had to do all the things you did, and this problem had been stressing us, (fixed income social security folks), for nearly two weeks. I love fixing things and so does Shirley. You have really helped us! Thank you!

thanks for helping me ! im not mr fix it . ive been having throttle related riding mower starting problems. got that dealt with . got WAY back in the hollow , moved around on the seat wrong and it auto stopped. then OF COURSE its not gonna run . it would start and then stall and the the battery is running down. so there i am marooned in the amazon, i dont know whats wrong with it but i DO KNOW i couldnt fix it if i did. what a horrible feeling. so i dragged myself all the way back to the house and pulled up youtube and there you were ! i couldnt do the whole procedure back there but WITH YOUR HELP i surely WAS able to get the lines off and clean them out for the emergency fix ! put everything back together and ZOOM ! fired right up. it was such a relief to pull that mower safely into the garage. so if you ever get frustrated with posting your stuff please know that your kindness really helped me when i needed it the most and that your efforts are appreciated. thank you sir. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

This was so great! I agree, if it's a LT1000 Craftsman they're oldies but goodies and I love mine so much, same green color, and want to save her. But the last couple months two people tried to solve why she runs 20 mins then chokes and dies. Put in a new carburetor and everything so now my auto mechanic recommended this fuel filter change saying sometimes a new carb can clog it even though you can't see the dirt in it. Wish me luck! I'm probably a little older than you, single female and feel like I can try this by myself now.

I had a similar problem with my Husqvarna riding mower, briggs and stratton Intek V twin 24.0. Anyways it would run sometimes for 10 minutes, then would seem like it was starving for fuel, cut off , restart sometimes etc. I took the carburetor off, thinking some trash was in the bowl, inspected the float, needle and seat, everything looked really clean. Rebuilt the carb since I had it off, new o rings gaskets cleaned the jets etc. Installed it and fired right up, mowed yard for maybe five minutes, then the stalling , cutting out again. mind you my front yard has a slope to it. After pushing my riding mower back into the garage I was like this thing is starving for fuel. I checked my fuel filter, it was clean but noticed no fuel in it. Turns out my fuel filter was just a degree or two off to get the fuel from the tank, so I rearranged the fuel filter with the flow side pointed more downward, all of a sudden I see gas accumulating into the filter ! I zip tied it to another hose or cable so it will remain in that position. Ran great after that, was able to finish my yard and problem solved. Sorry for the long rant, but I just wanted to say sometimes it's the simple things that get over looked, like I did ! maybe this will save someone some time if they have a similar problem. Thanks for your videos and I do appreciate them !

I bought a used Sears lawn tractor with this same 16 HP engine over 20 years ago and it's still running today. I however put a fuel shut off between the filter and tank. Normal maintenance when needed and no ethonol fuel. The mower deck went out however and I use the tractor to tow my yard cart. My kids bought me a new 20 HP tractor when I retired and it's still going also. Thanks for the video. I'm in the NW also.

I guess you could look at it this way, now your Mower runs and you have new sharp Blades:) Merry Christmas .....BB23

While a degraded fuel line can be one cause, there can be multiple causes for reduced flow. The mower is a gravity fed system without a fuel pump which depends on the height of the tank above the carb for the pressure. A low rise gravity fed system does not exert enough pressure to effectivly flow through a 70 micron paper element filter. Gravity fed systems are supposed to use a simple screen disc type filter which has a much lower resistance to flow. Was there a prefilter in the tank? In could be clogged with debris from refilling.

I'm not fixing "Boogie Man" issues for YT content. I'm fixing a machine that is broken, I say this because if you actually own one of these or have worked on one of these mowers then you would have not made a comment like "Was there a prefilter in the tank? In could be clogged with debris from refilling." and you would know that the filters used do not matter. In the 40+ years I have been repairing mowers I have seen Briggs use all types of filters on various motors. Filter type is a myth. Minus 50 pts to the keyboard tech. Cheers

Fixed a mower this week that would run for just a few minutes then quit. Turned out to be the vent hole in the center of the gas tank cap had become blocked with some sort of crystallized goo. It would run until the tank pressure became a vacuum. Opening the cap would relieve the vacuum allowing the engine to run, the lower the fuel level, the longer it would run before creating a vacuum. Removed blockage from vent hole, instant fix.

If you plan on reusing your fuel you drained out of the gas tank. I would put like a Scott’s shop towel in your funnel to make sure the fuel is clean and not full of gunk and junk(dirty fuel) in the fuel

After watching this video I feel very reassured. Very reassured that I will be buying a new electric tractor soon. If they are anything like my EV, they need next to no maintenance and they are very cheap to run. Thank you for helping with the decision.

Same here. After many years of my weedeaters, leaf blowers, push mowers, and riding mowers giving me problems like this and others, electric or battery powered equipment will be worth a try at the least. The amount of time I've spent working on the gas powered machines is ridiculous and time I won't get back!

Hey man not sure if you’re going to see this but I could use a hand maybe you can help... i’m not getting any fuel to the carburetor I have replaced the fuel filter fuel pump and made sure the float in the carburetor isn’t sticking.. so from diagnosing it the only thing I can come up with is that I’m not getting any suction to the fuel pump but I don’t really understand what suction is used looks like the hose goes to the oil stem? When I take that hose off and I blow into it manually with my mouth I can see a little bit of fuel bubbling in the fuel filter any idea what I can do to fix suction issue? Thanks

Are u able to see the two pictures in my reply above? I can’t even get a diagram to show me where the fuel filter is, or if it even has one still. (Bought used). Can u show me where it’s at in my pictures if u can see them?

The sight of the fuel filter was key to solving my problem. Blew out the line from the filter to the tank. Problem solved.

Yes, dirt builds up where the fuel hose hooks to the bottom of tank. Its almost impossible to see from the opening. Cheers.

I have a craftsman mower too. I have the fuel line issue. I also have an issue with the blades. Sometimes it cuts as if one blade is lower than the other. I also have a rear bagger. Am I supposed to use different types of blades with the bagger? Sometimes it's perfect and some days the tube constantly clogs. I know it's a lot and I appreciate any answers. Thanks

Low moisture is the key when using a bag, dryer the lawn the better. They do have high lift blades amzn.to/3O8Qpof (I have never tried these) You may have a bent blade or a a broken spindle bolt. That would be a bolt that holds the spindle to the deck, if you feel more vibrations than usual, you may have a bad spindle. This usually happens when you hit hidden treasures in the lawn.

Good job I have a shut off valve on mine and I was wondering why ya never cleaned the tank off while you had it out I always clean things as I go that way no dirt can get in anything.

I cleaned out the tank every few years as no matter how hard I tried to keep my fuel clean it was inevitable that dirt would work into the tank. I wanted to make this video as simple as possible, not stray off to far. Thanks for watching.

Have kind of the same issue with my craftsman. It will start and run for a little while then it will die. Ive had times that it doesnt even do this and runs fine but then there will be days it does it all the time. Ive checked the fuel line, fuel filter, gas cap.and fuel tank for all the issues but they are all fine. I also put new fuel line and fuel filter just to have new. Ive heard the sensor on the bottom of the carberator could be an issue. Anybody have any advice

People need to understand ethenal is moonshine and the problem is water and gas don’t mix you need to use a stabilizer there is a product in Canada called phase 4 fuel and ethenal treatment that prevents separation and keeps the fuel fresh for 2 years

Recommend that a fuel shut off valve be installed if there’s none. Sooner or later your engine will be flooded by gasoline from a bad float in the carb. Activating the shut off/ turn on valve will prevent that problem.

my mower would just shut off and then would restart. turns out the rubber tip came free of the pintal in the electric shut off anti backfire valve and was floating free and every once in a while it would move up into the needle seat and shut off the fuel

It started stalling on my first turn… Right turn… pooped out… and Continued to do so… Brand New From Lowe’s … I think they gave me a refurbished…. I’m pissed…

I've experienced plugged vent caps. In Wisconsin we have recreational fuel available. It costs more. Well worth the expense.
