Lawn mower dies after running for a few minutes - Will not stay running - Stalls - FIXED!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Our riding lawn mower starts and runs just fine, but then after approximately 30 minutes, it will sputter and stall. It will start back up occasionally but will not stay running. Often times it will not start back up. After scratching my head over this issue for a while, I determined that it was a faulty fuel cap. The ventilated cap must be clogged and not allowing the fuel tank to ventilate. The motor is drawing fuel from the tank and eventually the vacuum created is too strong for the motor to draw fuel from the tank and it stalls out. Simply unscrewing the gas cap allows air to rush in and pressurize the tank and the mower fires right back up!

I have a Deere L120, with a briggs 22hp or 24hp. Has been doing the exact same thing. I thought it was overheating, so I fixed the hood. The grill was flopping g around, almost bought a carburator. I'm going to our place next weekend where it's at, well see if that's it. Thanks.

Hey Danimator! Thank you so much for posting this video!! Have a 1988 165 Hydro w/2 seasons of use, and last night after refilling the fuel tank it started behaving like yours. Since I’m not the most mechanically inclined person I was getting ready for a big repair bill. Took the cap off and replaced it ensuring it was on properly, and BINGO!!! Thank you again for saving me significant amounts of aggravation/time/$!!!!
This was a HUGE help! Checked too many other things before coming across this video. It worked on my JD LA115. Took the gas cap off cleaned and put back on. Started right up and ran smoothly. Many thanks
My John Deere was doing the same thing. I had not changed the fuel filter in the spring so I started with changing that component, but same thing. Saw this video and walked out to our shed not expecting much....however slowly unscrewed the gas cap and the same whosh of air. Started the tractor and low and behold it ran! thanks for the idea. And showing the stalling was VERY helpful! Thank you.
I wish I would have found this video sooner, I put a carburetor on yesterday with the same result of the engine dying. I was very angry and now I feel stupid for not checking that. Thank you for the video.
Really want to thank you for this video! Such a simple thing but could have gotten a big repair bill had I not seen this!

Think you just saved my uncle a trip out here! In a wheelchair, but have a yard trailer I tow to haul my chair after transferring up and over. Love to do as much as I can in the yard, but when moving back into my home earlier this year, certain "family and friends " had helped themselves to most every tool that I owned, a 4x4, and almost a pocket bike. Oddly a nephew and friend were loading up a car they stored here when I arrived, noticed that my pocket bike was missing, certain loud words came out of me. The friend then said "uh, we loaded it my truck"... nephew said "didn't think you needed it" looking mad at his friend. Sadly have to have my almost retired uncle come over for most everything. He works insane hours like I used to. Feel bad to ask over stuff i could've fixed, just no tools. You may have saved the day!!!!!! Going to spray myself down with mosquito spray and roll around to where it died. Sudden temperature change here in Florida, I should've thought of it! Instant Subscription!!!

Hope you’re able to get the mower running 👍
I have a old JD 175 Tractor 38” deck with an FC420V engine. Same symptoms; runs for a few minutes then just dies. PITA! Never considered it might be the gas cap, but I guess so because I removed the cap then put it back on loosely enough to hold on. Started right up and I finished the lawn in the dark. I’ll look into cleaning the cap and purchasing another asap. Appreciate you taking the time to help us out!
Thank you, I went out and finished mowing my grass with the cap off , ran perfect, gonna go buy a new cap.
Good find. My first thought was spring carburetor cleaning season😂
Spot on ! Thanks for sharing this …saved me time and money 💵 👍🏼💪🏼
Thanks for the tip. Now I just have to remember all the tricks just to keep my John Deere Z425 running smoothly.Jeeeeez!
AWESOME... Im sure that is a very valuable bit of information for a lot of us.
Oh my gosh! Thanks! I was ready to drive the thing off a cliff! A good shot of carb cleaner down the vent hole and blow with air hose and problem solved! I’m subscribing!
THANK YOU for showing video of symptoms!!!!!! Every other video just highlights issues and jumps to clean this or replace that. You saved me a couple hours of work and a bunch of money. My mower behaved exactly as yours in the video. Looked at cap and sure enough it was clogged, air hissed back into gas tank when opened. Took 2 seconds with a piece of wire to clean cap and it ran just fine.
Thank you for posting this - really saved my bacon.... thought I would be tearing apart and cleaning the Carb and checking a bunch of other things as well (clogged fuel filter, fuel pump, etc.). Instead, I just bought a replacement cap 🙂
Thank you so much! I am very thankful for U-tube!
I'd be lost with out KZread. Thx dude.
Super helpful, thank you. After replacing fuel pump several times your video pointed right the problem. I was releasing the pressure every time I replaced the fuel pump instead of the faulty gas cap
Thank YOU I never thought about that before. I’ve replaced 1-Coil, oil changed, and plug’s and a black wire that is used for a kill switch it is equipped with a diode that only allows electric to pass through at One Direction.
Thank you! Having this same problem recently and noticed the fuel filter was empty and thought maybe fuel pump, but the intermittentness of it all had me scratching my head. I will check this next time it does it.
The same exact thing has happened to mine. Just cleaned the cap😁
I had to blow out the vent tube on mine. Works like a charm......Thank you!!!!
My JD D160 has very similar symptoms. I Replaced fuel filter, plugs, air filter. Then searched for those symptoms and your video popped up. Gonna blow the cap out with the compressed air blow gun and see if that fixes it. I've also seen this issue on small Honda engines on rototillers too. Thanks 😊.
Worked like a charm
THANK YOU DUDE ive seen this in three of my mowers over the years shop stated it was choke but nope.
Awesome clip!!! TYSM!

Why can't they all be like this?!
Wow! thanks so much!
I really hope my issue is this simple to solve lol. Gonna try tomorrow.
Thanks. This seems to be happening to my used 2022 X330 i just bought. Same symptoms. Next time it dies, I'll loosen the gas cap to see if it was under a vacuum.
I cleaned the vent on gas cap the first thing .Mine was the electronic control module. I even changed out ignition switch and fuel pump. I have a x360 and just bought a z530r z trak
THANKS!!!
So many things it 'could be' but that cap whooshh was a give way... I basted the tiny hole on mine with carb cleaner (straw on the hole).....With mine, the fuel hose rearwards of the filter was suspended by a zip tie, and the weight of the hose was compressing it. I used my underpants method on the fuel hose: got rid of the compression point and let it swing..
Hadnt seen that one.. Thanks
Awesomeness
🎉🎉 thank you bud... I owe you a pop 😂
That’s exactly what mines doing. I’ll mow for about 10 or 15 minutes then it starts cutting out eventually dying. After a few minutes it starts back up then repeats. I’ll change the fuel cap and see what happens.
Checked the gas cap and nothing to clean. It is immaculate. This appears to be an intermittent thermal problem. Shutting down and monkeying with the gas cap gives it just enough time to cool down and cure the heat problem.

It's a bad design. My dad's e150 does this. I went to my JD dealer, and I got a gas cap for 35 bucks. It's like 20 bucks on Amazon. It worked for 40 mins the shutdown again. The guy at the dealership told me it's a bad design of the fuel pump. They burn up. They wanted 100 bucks it. It is 30 bucks online.

@vicedpowers1750 I never bought it. So what I do once it starts acting like it will die. I just stop mowing and unscrew the gas cap. I keep it running the whole time. Once it starts running better after a minute or two. I place the cap back on and keep going. So I guess the John deere shop near me doesn't have anyone idea either.

@@CaughtMedia thanks, mine does the same stalling but the cap doesn’t seem to have an air lock, but it does start a few hours later after it’s cooled down, so I’m gonna give it a tune up and see if that helps. LT 160 1400hrs

@@CaughtMedia I just opened the op of the engine and it was packed with insulation from mice, so I cleaned it out and I’ll see if that works
So how did you fix it? If you cleaned the cap, how did you clean it out? I'm ready to simply drill a hole in the cap-----a vent is a hole in some shape or form!
If it isn’t the cap,or the filter, or the pump, there’s one more possibility. The fuel pick up tube that backtracks from the filter can become partially clogged and the debris is slowly pulled in/up choking off the fuel supply as the mower runs, mine would go for up to 30 minutes. You can lift the hood and watch the flow of fuel through the filter gradually slow then stop along with the engine. Use back pressure to clear the tube and remove the debris from the tank. The Deere dealership had it twice before I finally figured it out.
Well I hope that is all it is on mine! I change the fuel pump, filter and air filter , it rain for about 20 minutes.. so I left it in the woods.. I'll try checking the gas cap (which is pretty new) and see if that solves it.. Geez i hope so!! Thank you..
👌👌👌
Had the same issue on mine many times.... when it happens I just take the air nozzle to it and then it's good again for a while.
Anyone happen to know if this could be an issue with an older LA145. something like 15 years old
I have no idea why so many say it is the fuel cap. My fuel cap is not tightened fully therefore air can get to the tank. I have had the same issues as yours but it has NOT been the fuel cap.

These are great videos.... But my Ride on....Ahhhh! I've tried just about everything except stripping the Carbie. Runs 20 - 30 mins stalls. I let it cool and I get 10 minutes.... then 5 - 10 mins. I have: changed fuel and air filters, cleaned out the tank, replaced the coil and plug, took valve out of petrol cap to eliminate vapour lock. Behaviour doesn't change. When it stalls, the fuel filter is empty??? Tank at least half full. How can this be?... fuel lines and clamps all appear okay. Any further ideas.....????.... What am I missing?? Thanks Oh, it is a Briggs Stratton 19.5 HP Intek so no fuel pump... gravity!

@@gregr.3886It is 10 years old. I eliminated fuel line. The problem was the fuel filter. Wrong type for a GRAVITY fed system. The Mower shop gave me a cartridge type...(no Workies!!!). Needed to be button type. Live and learn!!!
Put some stable in the gas
I once had a situation with my John Deere push mower once where I'd start it and it immediately died. Just had to disassemble the carb, clean it, and it stays running!

Good deal!
Well...I removed and reinstalled my cap but still doesn't want to work right. Tried running without the gas cap. Backfired on startup, ran much better after about 30 seconds, but then died again 5 minutes later (with the gas cap still off). Serious;y aggravating as this is making a 1-acre mow a 2-day project...

Can I have a mower like that
X380 dies 125 hours replaced fuel cap fuel filter and air filter still dies.
I have a deere d105. Only 3 years old and only 47 hours in it. It runs perfect until it gets hot after 10 minutes and stalls. Won't restart. I put on a new carburetor, new fuel pump, new fuel lines, new coil and spark plug and new air filter and fuel filter. I figured the problem was over. Mower got 20 minutes and I figured the issue was fixed and boom it stalled out. I nearly flipped the hell out. The fuel cap on my mower doesn't release any pressure when I unscrew it so I'm not sure my issue is the cap. I'm totally lost. The friggin warranty ended 10 months ago (of course). I went to local John deere dealer. They want 85 dollars to just look at it up to a half hour. Then it's 130 an hour labor, plus their oem parts that'll be outrageous. I'm in need of any info from anyone here

If you still having issues try some starter fluid in the carb or spark plug hole. If it still won’t at least try to start it’s probably electrical. If it starts for a few minutes and dies probably a fuel problem. This won’t pin down exact cause but may point you in the right direction.
Thanks. I owe you a coke cola 😋
It’s saying fuel please. More of it
First take fuel cap off 😊
My Craftsman doesn't have a hole in the cap, so useless. .
*T H A N K S ! ! !* ( I have that same model.) Wife claims the "L A" stands for "LardAss," so she refuses to mow with it. I say that's a L.ameA.ss excuse.
Might be on to something 🫡🤔😳... thanks for the tip
