Easy to follow and thorough step by step tutorials do it yourself (DIY) to help you with your broken lawn and garden equipment including snowblowers.
I do my best to teach you how to easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way with real repairs beyond just replacing a spark plug. These tips are for both the homeowner and shop owner.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like a chainsaw, weed eater, weed wacker, string trimmer, grass trimmer, line trimmer, hedge trimmer, strimmer, brush cutter, leaf blower, or four stroke, four cycle units like a lawnmower, wood splitter, lawn tractor, snowblower, pressure washer, generator or a ride on mower that needs parts installed or replaced, I’m your go-to guy.
My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.
I’ve been a small engine mechanic for many decades and also run my own repair shop so my videos are loaded with tips and tricks that I have learned and want to share with you. You will also find many tool and product reviews from top brands on my channel as well.
I have the largest Small Engine Repair Video Library on KZread and the entire internet with over 1200 videos, just GOOGLE "DONYBOY73"!

This Spring, when I started up the mower, small bits of cloth wipes (blue shop towels) flew out. I suspected mice, and gave it a once over (thankfully not like this video!). Old timer told me to put pouch of mothballs (They come in netted bag now) around motor when storing for winter, to keep mice away. I am trying it but my shed smells like some old closet ;)

It will start right up but does it again, I changed the fuel pump and filter and it runs good now, but the exhaust is somewhat smokey, and i think it still sounds a bit rough, not much. any anvice? maybe clean the carb? Thanks

Hi Don thx for another informative video....i have a 2016 husky (tractor supply) with a 547cc powermore engine that runs for a 10 minutes then sputters and quits. In hot weather it takes less time to do this. I've tried running with loosened cap with no improvement. I took out the carb, dropped the bowl and pushed a wire strand thru the main jet and sprayed it all with carb cleaner but that was the extent of the disassembly. can't tell if its a fuel or spark problem but it's only a couple of years old and hardly used. reinstalled carb with no improvement. I'll try to run it with the spark tester to check the coil but isn't that less likely on a machine this new?

My Briggs opposed twin would run great for 45 seconds, then shut off. I discovered I could keep the engine running with a squirt bottle. I then narrowed the problem down to some minor pump issues. The squirt bottle trick kept me from going in the wrong diagnostic direction.

I hear the solenoid click when turning the key and it also runs no problem when the lead to the ignition module is unplugged which tells me something is shutting it off. Could I ha a bad fuel pump or can the fuel solenoid be faulty even though it clicks?

Two things you failed to mention one minor one potentially major. On the fan cover there's for little spacers that go behind the bolts you don't want to forget them when removing the cover you want to make sure they go back in in the correct spot. On the air filter there's normally a wing nut that holds the filter to the housing easily lost part but they are most times there.

Nothing happened with the blades. A week later I put in the seat switch. Now it won't drive. I put the old seat switch back in. It still doesn't drive. I did this 2 times each. Hi Don, another great video. Can I just ask... I have one almost identical to this and it starts and runs fine for about 20-30mins and then loses power and stalls. If allowed to cool off a little it will run strong again for a while and cut out. Someone suggested that fi the fuel filter and fuel system is clear then it could be an electronic module of some kind of which this model has two of ?Any ideas ?Cheers mateJason

yes check both, sometimes i loosen the gas cap to make sure it's not a venting problem. it can also be the coil and possibly it needs a valve adjustment depending on your engine

Hi Jason, that sure sounds like the gas tank vent is clogged. Leave the gas cap a little loose the next time you mow, and see if it will run for a longer period of time.

DonyBoy, I have a Poland riding mower with a 15.5 Briggs and station engine on it. It does surge up and down, with a new carb on it. What could be the problem with it ? I don't think its in the governor's. It idles just fine on a low idle, but when you go to put a load on it ,that's when it starts to surge. . I found out that was a Chinese knock off carb. Don't never use anything from China, yes I know they are cheaper ,but in the long run it is cheaper by going with an I.E. CARBURETOR

Ahhhh... don't you love the Soy-based wiring insulation? The mice/squirrels sure do. 3M tape is great. I also use Polyken 268 High Temp Tape. Over time, the cheap PVC tapes will slowly unwind themselves from the wire, where-as the quality Name-brand tapes will stay in place.

It does unwind, yet still retains the ability to stick to everything else...but the wire it was on.

I use silicone caulk works great. Add tape for extra piece of mind.
