Thanks for watching. This mower would run but only when choked. The fix was pretty easy but the question is aftermarket Carb vs. OEM Carb.

    JD S130. Same symptoms tricky throttle/choke adjustments to run. My issue was the "governor blade" or its equal was not working, it was floating, no tension on the vertical wire or arm that connects to carb. At the time I was clueless and frustrated. While had my air handy, I blew out the hard to get/see area on top of the carburetor. Magic, noticed the wire now had a little tension. Engine ran fine. Before had the same symptoms as your oldie but goodie. No skill or knowledge, just dumb luck so I thought I would share. The video inspired me to trouble shoot. THX.

    Any ideas on this. I’m up for trying anything at this point. I have a JD x390 with a Kawasaki fs651v it’ll only run for a few seconds to maybe a few minutes but only with the choke on. I’ve put a new carb on it, new fuel pump, all filters are new, fresh oil change. I also drained the tank and put fresh gas in. I blew out all the fuel lines and did a valve job. Yet here I am with it still stalling in seconds. I feel like this issue all started when I hit a wet spot mowing but I could be full of shit there. Any help is definitely appreciated.

    sure, I wonder if the "circuit" for the fuel shut off solenoid is working. Since you replaced the carb, It should have come with a new one at the bottom of the bowl. That's why I'm guessing it has to be the wires or the key switch. Also do you think one of the safeties is tripping and causing the engine to shut off?

Fuel line to filter is fine. After filter is slower but I’m assuming that’s normal due to the filter resistance. I have a John deer l130. I think the Chinese aftermarket carbs work better, because they don't have to meet any epa regs so they can have proper jet sizes instead of always being lean. I've replaced carbs on riding mowers, push mowers, generators, and chainsaws, never had a dud. The Tecumseh carbs even has adjustment screws exposed where the OEM was blocked off.

    The new aftermarket carburetor was so cheap. I chose to get it instead of dismantling and clearing those clogged paths on the old carburetor. I had a lot of luck, switching out a starter and solenoid previously. I'm just about to install my new carburetor and hope for the best. If that doesn't work I should do what I probably should've already done and check the fuel cap. The problem is I don't know how to tell if it's functional or not. Can you help me with that? Oh and I wanted to say thanks for the tip about doubling up the nuts on the one post for the carburetor so I could undo the linkages easily. I was baffled at first, but after watching it three times I understood.

  • @INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE

    @INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE

    to check if the cap is venting, disconnect the fuel line at the filter near the right foot pedal. Fuel should drain from the line when you move the end of the hose below the frame due to gravity and pressure differential. Capture the fuel in a container and watch to see if the fuel flow stays "continuous" or if the flow starts to slow down. This would show that the cap is not venting air into the tank. IF it does this, then open the fuel cap and if the flow starts back up, then you'll know the cap needs to be replaced or if you need to put a small hole in it

    I replaced the carb but mine would still not start. Had visible gas droplets coming from the carb. Complained and got my money back. Bought another from a different supplier and I am still having problems starting and running. I had backfires out of the carb so I removed the flywheel to see if the key in the crank was still good and it was. New stock fuel pump and fuel lines. Gov seems okay. No adjustment on carb except idle. Going crazy!

    I would get one, I just don't want to use it on the channel, I don't want to show that you need to buy this to clean a carb. Most people will never clean a carb in their life, so for those few people that might do it once or twice, it way not be worth it.

    Take off original carb, clean throughly and blow out fuel line back into tank to remove anything restricting free flow - done - runs like a champ - new carb - nope but solution of it is truly dead - stihl chainsaws have that problem after a few years and lost of mesquite corrosion!
