I tried to recreate the problem, and run the mower out of fuel again to see if it would do the same thing again. I could not get the mower to do what it did the day I could not keep it running. I think all my problem was that it lost suction or got air in the fuel line. Maybe my fuel pump is starting to go bad. There are a lot of good answers and things to check in the comments thank you all for trying to help. I'm sure these answers will help someone else out. If you leave anymore comments on what to check try to explain how to do it so that it might help someone else out. Thank you again and God bless

Thanks for the great video! So I think your question was - "What is the return line to the tank". It looks like it is part of some kind of EVAP system to return gas fumes back to the tank for reuse. It's all emission control stuff that is part of a closed loop system. Blowing out the lines caused it to start functioning properly again..

My z540 would start and run for a few minutes and then sputter and stop. I could get it to restart and it would go for another few minutes and stop. I took the top cover moding off and detached both lines out of the fuel tank and blew the lines out. I then put it all back together and it started right up and never stop or sputtered like it did before. This video definitely helped me resolve my issues. Thank you!

I would try to find non-ethanol fuel for it. Since I started putting non-ethanol in mine, it has not happened.
Glad I saw this… Engine started surging shortly after I did a tune-up. Ran great for 10 minutes, then started surging and got worse as time went on. Even stared back-firing at low idle. I did what everyone else did… replaced fuel pump, inspected gas tank for water, etc. but just remembered when installing fuel filter, not much gas came from the line to the full tank. I should have investigated that, but I was so focused on other things, like maybe I missed something on the tune-up that I dismissed it and moved on. After seeing this it makes total sense. Tractor is 9 years old now and thinking the lines are breaking down. Gonna revisit tomorrow and try your method. Thank you.

Use fuel lines rated for marine use? They have a USCG stamp on the labeling. I think they are MORE resistant to breaking down from the ethanol!
I greatly appreciate the video and you getting this thread going. I had the exact same issue, pulled the line for the fuel pump- (out to carb), cranked it a few times, had great fuel flow, put it back together and fixed. I'm thinking air or a minor obstruction somewhere in the fuel lines. Thanks again!

Very helpful. Blew out gas tank “vacuum” hose. Didn’t resolve. Removed gas cap. Started throttled using choke. After 3 to 4 minutes, engine started to run fine. Tightened gas cap and played with choke/throttle and eventually started to run properly. Guessing I ran fuel too low and that created throttle issue. Throttle issue seems common to riding mowers on KZread. Gotta love the “lightbulb theory”. Hope this helps.
I had a 17.5 briggs and stratton in a JD S100 with the same problem after a different repair. I learned about the vapor recovery system from this vid. I was trying to start the engine with the air filter off. I had the same issue, put the filter in ,no more problem.

Also check the ignition wire from the key switch. If the wire is rubbing or vibrating on the steering shaft (rod) the insulation may wear and cause an intermittent ground short, which will cause the engine to stop. That happened on my LA 115. Fixed it by wrapping electrical tape around the wire where it was rubbing on the steering shaft.

You never checked the fuel filter before doing this process here? If there is gas in the fuel filter then you have no fuel problem...at least up to the fuel pump which is also easy to check with those smaller hoses there, pulling them off and see if fuel is flowing through them.....
Is it just me or does anybody else Think it’s crazy there isn’t a screen at the top of the fuel tank to filter out debris. All these problems I’m reading concerning dirt and grime in the fuel line doesn’t surprise me without that screen on the top of the tank. Thank you, Jim for the walk-through. I’m looking forward to giving it a shot in the morning using your technique.

Cleaning hole in gas cap worked for me! I have an older 125 automatic without vapor recovery. It started the season fine even with old gas and cold weather but then started randomly dying over the last two weeks, sometimes after 30 minutes when completely warm, other times within a minute of starting cold. I drained old gas, blew up through hose to tank, put in fresh gas, replaced fuel filter, plugs, oil change. Then I saw other comments in this post, knocked the dirt out of the tiny center hole in the gas cap and blew through it (also not tightening the cap super tight) and it has been starting and running fine for a couple of days. Surprising that such a tiny bit of dirt could impede the flow of gas and the suction of the fuel pump would not pull it through...maybe the fuel pump is on the way out but so far, so good for me and I would suggest anyone having similar problems try this easy step first.

Finally gave up took to highly-rated J D dealer charged me $200 after mowing 10 minutes it stopped. Dealer took it back after having it 2 weeks and admitting they were puzzled they discovered the fuel lines were rotting from the inside and small particles were going thru the fuel line. I have a E110 2018 John Deere riding lawnmower,I watched a video about the E series how the cam shaft has a very poor design and the fellow had to change it,well the same thing happened to mine after 100 mowing hours I took it to the John Deere place in Frederick Md and the fellow called me and told me I should just go ahead and get a new motor because the cost of fixing the old one was just about the cost of a new one, if it’s a poor design shouldn’t JD do a recall on this series or at least offer me a discount. When purchasing my tractor I thought nothing runs like a Deere,I know stuff happens but if it’s a poor design and it’s happening a lot then everyone who’s purchased this series should be notified and a resolution should be made,I feel like I’m being taken for a ride ( no pun intended) thanks
Mine would at first start then lose power then surge and lose power cycle. Ran for about 10 minutes with choke partially on then dies and would not start. Looked around and saw a lot of comments about the fuel lines deteriorating around the 10 year mark. Mine is kept inside but is 13 years old. I replaced the fuel line section from carb to fuel pump and fuel filter to fuel pump. Neither line seemed clogged as I could blow through them easily. Upon installing the new lines, it started of 30 seconds to re-pressurize the fuel system. So either there was something in those two lines I couldn't notice or when I depressurized the section between the fuel filter and pump, the gas may have back-washed whatever was blocking the fuel line. It ran fine and I finished the yard. Will replace the tank to the fuel filter and get a new fuel filter when it isn't in the 90's outside.

John Deere labels that second line as a "vapor line". The carb sucks out the vapor air from the tank and it apparently also helps the fuel flow. Notice these models have a different style gas cap too. I've found any restrictions in fuel flow can cause a carb too lean condition and also a hotter motor and can def cause shut offs and or rough idle and even blown head gaskets when too hot.

I have a John Deere S240 and it's only two years old. Last serviced was the end of July this year. The mower ran fine right after I got it back from the repair shop then I filled the gas tank, mowed a couple of weeks later and started having issues. While mowing, the mower sounded like it wanted to quit and it finally did and wouldn't start again. I let it sit for a week or so then had to charge the battery and tried to start it. Huge plumes of white smoke billowed out and the mower wouldn't stay running. I pushed the mower into a shady area and saw the grass was covered in oil. Great. Another week or so goes by while I was waiting for the mower repair shop guy to return to work from being out with Covid. In the meanwhile I started watching videos on the things that I could possibly do to get my mower running again. When I checked the oil, the reservoir was full of gas so I drained all that out. I then poured in two quarts of oil, drained THAT out then put in two quarts and left it. I no longer smelled gas. I didn't try to start the mower though because the repair guy said he was coming over this weekend to see if he can get the mower straightened out. He no longer has Covid but I'm scared. It's raining today but if it stops I'm going to remove the gas filter, use my air compressor to gently blow air through the gas line and put on a new filter. A new mower shouldn't have this issue and I'm now wondering if some debris got into the gas tank when I was filling it up. I am not savvy at all when it comes to machines and motors.

@@nothisispatrick8309 Actually this is EXACTLY the issue. These mowers are known for this type of problem. To be more exact the electronic solenoid (and/or floats) get stuck from debris, and floods the cylinders. The flooded cylinders leak fuel past the piston rings into the crankcase. There by mixing with the oil and overflowing the case.
I had exactly the same problem..10 minutes then blump blump bang stop.... Deere X320. ...4 times in a row.. I was sure it was gasoline.... checked the pressure relief valve in the gas filler cap...all ok... New pump last year.... Stripped the carb THREE TIMES.... Fuel level full... Just looked at the ignition packs air gap and one was nil ! It had slipped forward... Just set the air gap to 0.25 mm on both ignition packs and it sounds far better with zero surging.... Need to give it a longer test but so far it sounds sweet and starts instantly...... could be it got hot in 10 minutes and almost welded itself to the flywheel. When I let it cool it worked for for 10 minutes it started fine... I need to give it a 30 minute test but it's 82F in Wisconsin so I am off to the lake ! About 50% of you-tubers say ignition packs, and 50% say carb/gas problems... Reporting back FAILED.... 10 mins running with mower on....and it sounded superb after the ignition job...then spluttered and stopped.. So I am back to being convinced it is a gasoline problem. Next step...fit the old gas pump I changed out 18 months ago as a maintenance item...Watch this space ! ok 2pm Sunday... Changed the fuel pump for the original 2010 pump... Noticed that the very short hose that goes to the cylinder head to activate the pump, was loose. Yippee thinks I, and re-assembled with the hose much tighter. Started up ..great, went 200 yards mowing ...clunk thump stopped ! Next step: I have an extra thin 15 mm wrench on order from home depot and I will check the fuel cut off solenoid and see what is afoot... Draining fuel out of the carb underside can only help anyway..Good job I managed to mow the 1.8 acres yesterday or wifey would have been exhausted using her scissors....

I had the same exact problem that just started randomly this year, I tried everything, blew out all the fuel lines from the tank to the carb, replaced the fuel filter, replaced fuel pump, cleaned and rebuilt the carb, nothing fixed it. I knew it just had to be something with or in the fuel tank blocking a good flow of fuel. I did manage to fix it though. I took off the hose at the tank like you did, and shot carb cleaner directly into the tank. I just removed the black hose, and kept the white part in place. I haven't had a problem since! I'm pretty sure the line in the tank is either deteriorating or is so gunked up that even a blast of air didn't clean it out.

Depending on the EPA stage of the unit.. ie Caliunicornia EVAP it has a charcoal canister. That second line is a tank vent and routs to the canister then to the carburetors air horn which creates forced air draw through the charcoal filter. Any tank that has a clogged vent will build vacuum in the fuel tank and prevent fuel from getting to the carburetor.

Here's my 2 cents... I just had this issue and thought it was a clogged jet. I cleaned the main jet and reassembled and it started up and finished my lawn. The very next mow; it died. I reached down to the carb and the anti backfire solenoid was smoking hot. I removed the solenoid and did an ohm meter reading. It was open ! After it cooled down it again measured resistance. I put it on and used it till it quit again and replaced it and it's not happened again and it only gets warm..not hot. That solenoid has a plunger that blocks the main jet when power is off. If you've been in your float bowl, you'll already know how to change it. On a briggs; You'll need a 1/2" open end that you'll have to grind down so it fits between the solenoid and the bowl. In my case; I initially thought I had found the problem only to find out the solenoid had been open circuiting due to excessive heat. I found this is a very common fault on all newer mowers with overhead valves that need this device because the engines are so tight (efficient), they will backfire because there is so much vacuum even as the engine is shutting down, it gets post ignition. Not saying this is your issue but worth considering.

Holy smokes glad you figured it out. Thanks for watching
Mower did it again after I thought it was fixed. Tried blowing out fuel and vent connected to gas tank and fuel pump. Then changed fuel filter and it runs good again. Recently changed fuel filter when completed annual maintenance, so I didn’t think I needed to replace fuel filter so soon. Must have been from running fuel almost empty that clogged fuel filter.

Jim, these videos are very helpful. I have a problem that just came up with my D-100. When I engage the blade lever, the engine bogs down and quits. I replaced the belt last fall, and it's been running fine till now, and all of a sudden I have this issue. I checked the belt tension (with the engine off) and with the blade lever engaged, and the belt does not seem overly tight. Any suggestions on what to check? Thanks.

look under the deck for anything holding the blades up (pieces of wood, cord/rope that was not seen, barbed wire piece,etc...) also like DIY JIM mentioned spin the spindles to make sure they spin freely, if not it could be a bearing issue.

Chord or wire wrapped around the blade spindles. Sometimes they are subtle and difficult to get out.
I had the same problem, it was the gas cap. The cap had gotten dirty and was not allowing the flow of air. Take a look at the small hole in the middle of the cap to be sure it is not clogged, if it is clogged stick something in it and then remove the rubber seal inside the cap and blow out any dirt in the cap. If you have an air compressor use that. Once all of the obstructions to the flow of air through the cap are gone your problem will be solved. Also don't screw the cap on super tight, so air can get in that way also.

So I am having the same issue with mine. The two tubes off the gas tank, one is fuel, the other is a vent line that I believe goes into OHV cover. I have gotten mine to run by disconnecting the fuel line right after the fuel filter and blowing into it. It will then start and run for a few minutes. I have replaced the coils, carb, plugs, fuel line, and fuel pump. I am waiting on another fuel pump based on what I consider good advise. The cheap fuel pumps you find on Ebay and such, are crap....So I found one that is OEM. Not sure if that is the fix, but I'm getting closer!

I have had the same problems with my 11 year old 110. After new fuel lines and new carburetor and cleaning out the fuel tank still the same dying out. Looked in the tank again and bam debris stopping it up again. Turns out it was part of the inside of the fuel cap seal falling into the tank and clogging it. Bet money they all do that after several years.

I have a big loss of power from last mowing season. Could I be running on just one cylinder? Need a new carb? Installed new fuel filter, fuel pump, spark plugs, coils, PTO clutch. Starts up good but has a big loss of power and bogs down on slight slopes and thicker grass areas. But even before the bogging down it just has a lot less power now this spring.

Vented gas cap, not venting like it should. like putting your finger over a straw filled with water the water will not flow out with your finger over the end. gas can't flow out of a gravity flow gas tank if it's not vented. clean or replace the gas cap.

@@DIYJIM you should test that theory first. next time your mower shuts off and won't start, remove the gas cap and listen for a sucking air sound as you remove the cap. If you hear it sucking air, that's a good sign the gas cap has a plugged vent. then put the cap back on and see if the mower starts and runs for a little bit and then shuts down again. if that happens then take the cap off again, try to find where the vent is and blow some air through it. If you can't fix it that way then ya, you'll need a new gas cap. Actually now that I think of it, nothing I said makes sense hahahahaha. because in the video you never removed the gas cap. you did something else and then mowed your whole lawn so the problem can't be a plugged vent on the gas cap. I'm not sure what you did but if you blew air into the carburetor, then ya David Ruff might be right. The fuel shut off solenoid might have been stuck closed and you might have opened it by blowing air into the carburetor. If that's true, then you just came up with a whole new way of troubleshooting the fuel shut off solenoid without taking the carburetor apart! hahahahahahaha! Seriously, you may have just made an important new discovery because I've never seen it done that way before!

Fuel line is probably deteriorating internally from ethanol fuel. Replace the fuel lines
Check under the gas tank for a bent or pinched gas line. If the mower is more than 10 years old, I'd replace all of the gas lines anyway. Ethanol fuel rots rubber fuel lines. Old fuel lines get weak and tend to kink easily. Also, replace the fuel filter and check the gas tank for dirt or water. Spray some carb cleaner in the carb too.

You need to put some cleaner in your gas cap it also breathe through your gas cap if you’re blowing air into it it could be slashing it around your gas cap which is opening the breather in it

You probably had a clogged vent line even though it goes to the carburetor the carburetor can get plugged up in the vent line and then it did the stars for air to neutralize so you could pop out of the tank most of them have a pressure release on the But that one doesn't have it

Yep I finding out I think it has something to do with the ethanol eating the fuel lines
Follow the fuel from the tank. Watch the fuel filter, if it stops flowing after a while the pickup tube reaching the bottom of the tank is partially clogged. Disconnect at the top of the tank, blow back, if there is resistance use compressor to clear it then purge and filter the gas from the tank repeatedly to get the debris out.

I think you may have water in the fuel. It happens a lot with our 10% ethanol. The water will settle to the bottom of the tank which is where the motor will pick fuel up from. My theory is when you start dumping air into the fuel your mixing the water back into suspension.

That hose you blew out to the carb is your tank vent. If you had trash in that hose it’s possible the tank could not vent and therefore you would lose steady fuel flow.

Maybe I will have to check my lines but it is not that old
This worked for me. I had changed the fuel filter and no change. I blew out the air line on both ends and no change. I blew the gas line out on the engine side and that appeared clear. When I put pressure on the gas tank end and released the pressure I had gas squirt out. I believe what is happening is when the engine starts the gas that is in the line is pumped into the engine. but there is not enough gas to keep it running. After the engines sits, even for a few seconds, gas bleeds into the line and allows the engine to run for a few seconds again.

@@ImHatred2420 It is most likely a lean misfire , moisture in fuel or poor quality fuel. lean misfire check your carburetor at it's base gasket for a vacuum leak spray carb cleaner on it while running engine and see if rpm's increase. If they do then tighten carburetor base bolts. But don't over tighten because you could warp base of carburetor. If it continues to leak there then pull carburetor off and check carburetor base with a straight edge checking for warpage if so then draw file base of carburetor to true it up .and recheck with straight edge. The gasket could also be bad? When re moving carburetor always replace base gasket. The air cleaner must be installed when checking for vacuum leak as to not induce carb cleaner into airhorn of carburetor. Also to the fuel pump check the vacuum supply hose from the crankcase for a tigth fit and no splits in the hose. For moisture get a bottle of Isopropyl Alcohol Gas Line Antifreeze and mix with fuel according to instructions on bottle. You will only need part of a bottle for a lawn tractor. Don't over dose it or it will make things worse. For fuel get non - ethanol regular gasoline. Ethanol gasoline is bad for gas line hoses, gaskets and carburetors in general. Best of luck.
I bought a house last year. For slightly more I got things like the boat and a John Deere 125 lawn tractor. Everything was in a sorry state of maintenance. Last year I replaced plugs, oil, oil filter and fuel filter. This year (2022) I did oil, air filter, sharpened blades, deck belt, (which it keeps throwing off). The more I look the more I cringe. About to do fuel filter again. It stalled out on me a couple times tonight. I will attempt to clear out the vent hose like Jim did it with how things were left it could be all sorts of things. I use only ethanol free fuel in it but doubt he was As disciplined.
