The 90's as a whole had the best heavyweight talent pool ever. You had Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Ray Mercer, Tommy Morrison, Larry Holmes was still very good, Michael Moorer, Oliver McCall, Razor Ruddock, Tony Tucker was very underrated. He started off 52-2 and those 2 loses were decision loses vs prime Tyson and Lewis. Then later on in the decade you had Ike Ibeabuchi, who might have been an all time great had he not gone to prison. You had David Tua, Chris Byrd was a great boxer - And then even the Klitschko's at the end of the decade. Vitali won his first title in 1999, and then Wlad the following year. Amazing talent - the beginning of the dominance of the "super heavyweight".

@@trashfishtvoregon7290That entirely depends on how Boxing develops. We're currently in the biggest spark of interest in the Heavyweight Division since Lewis/Holyfield, but it's going to take more young guns to carry forward. The sad part is it's still boxing and love him or hate him, Dana White has a very good point in that Boxing is run like a "Going out of business" sale with promotor's leaving talent development to someone else. NASCAR and IndyCar has a similar problem with getting a live audience. Racetracks EXPECT people to show up to events instead of spending money to promote a race.

People forget just how great Bowe was at his best. When he came in shape he was easily one of the best heavyweights that ever lived. He was beautiful to watch
That combo, an 8 punch salvo was too much for Ferguson to take! Peak Riddick Lamont Bowe at his best!

That was a slow count! It was 14 seconds! Larry Hazard probably knew about the bet and helped out Jesse!
The one heavy champion with text book boxing fundamentals.using the slip, use of the right or left cross.Accurate punches from traditional boxing stance.lef jab and the follow-up uppercut Riddick Bowe what a natural! Him and Ali the most stylish heavyweights coming in the ring and in the ring.!

Riddick was really something in this fight. His punches so tight and short. Also lovely to see him before he got damaged. I don't know who could have beaten him here. The combination of motivated fighter and the right trainer is quite something.

*This is when Bowe ceased to be the champion* . The moment he gave away his WBC title to avoid fighting Lewis and took this fight against a 36 year old, 19-9, #12 ranked Jesse Ferguson instead, Bowe was no longer the true heavyweight champion of the world. That honor belonged to Lennox Lewis... who was undefeated at this time.

It's also possible that Riddick Bowe paid Ray Mercer to throw the fight against Jesse Ferguson (the fight before this fight happened) so that Bowe would have an easier opponent in Ferguson and could dodge Ray Mercer. If you watch the Mercer vs Ferguson fight, it's as though Mercer isn't even trying to win that fight. It's a totally different Ray Mercer than the one we would see against other TOP 10 heavyweights.
@flexibleatheist

Bowe didn't have to pay Mercer anything, mercer didn't like morning runs and was lazy according to Bobby czyz who trained in the same gym. He barely won the rematch. And it WAS mercer who offered 10,000 to Ferguson to take a dive during a clinch and was caught on tape.

@@taekwondotime You're way off about Mercer. He was just lazy and complacent against Ferguson, same as he was against Holmes before that. He only got himself up for opponents who he considered a threat. That's why he looked great against the likes of Morrison, Holyfield and Lewis.

Almost half went to fed, state and local taxes. Then you add in the fees he had to give to his promoters, managers, trainers etc and he probably only got between 150 and 200. If he did though, it still would’ve been a lot more money he’d get than if he had to deal with don king for this fight lol

Bowe incredibly dangerous human here. I could see right away he was moving very well in dressing room b4 fight. Also tightly muscled in lower back area which indicates a lot.
Bowe was unbeatable in 1990-1994! Look at the shape he was in during those years especially 90-92 he was a fit big monster but he squandered it I believe and he started to get out and in shape to quickly ultimately wearing him down in my belief. Bowe in 1996 when he fought Golota was washed up seriously, he was slurring his speech mumbling and took too much weight off to quickly, the early 90s Bowe was a force and I believe that Riddick would have beat Lewis but the 1996 Bowe would get beat by guys like Micheal Grant and other hype jobs

Daian Safenraiter Tyson’s style was Taylor made for Bowe. The problem is that you never knew which Bowe and which Tyson was going to show up. Tyson post Rooney was a stationary target that relied on his strong chin to take shots until he could counter with that vicious left hook.. One thing is sure. If a prime Bowe and a prime Tyson met on the same night it would’ve been worth paying to see.

@@bnegs521 Lennox Lewis is boring to watch. Play it safe bc of his reach. Take them gloves off and Tyson destroys Lewis. Hell most people will agree Tyson would've beat Lewis if fought in there prime. 2002 Tyson while still a good boxer wasn't no late 80's version. Hell if I want to get petty with it. Lewis fought Tyson 2 decades late and still had difficulty with him. But yeah I know math so laugh at the 2 decades part (1989 to 2002 is technically two decades off, just not 20 years). 86 to 90 Tyson was exciting and way better than later years. In fact was apart of pop culture. Hardly no one but boxing fans care bout Lewis. Everyone knows of Tyson and he brought more attention to boxing. Lewis is boring fighter. Talented and one of the best. But he's a mayweather. Be safe n not entertaining
Bowe never built on his win over Holyfield. He gave up the WBC belt because he didn't want to fight Lennox Lewis and instead made two weak defences before his lack of discipline cost him his title.
Why he didnt fought lewis?

I think there's a chance that Bowe's camp paid Mercer to throw the fight against Ferguson. If you watch the Mercer vs Ferguson fight, you can see that Mercer isn't trying. Something fishy was going on there. Ferguson kept wanting to quit in the corner. Looked like he didn't want to be there. The real Ray Mercer (the one Lennox Lewis fought) would have been a real challenge for Bowe. The circumstances of Mercer's loss to Ferguson are indeed strange.
