Thanks for your simplified, but clear explanation of this topic. It seems to me that there is some misinformation about Rhogam getting circulated around the internet. People are saying that Rhogam is useless once sensitization develops, which I don't believe is the case.

What other ways can a women develop rh antibodies (excluding blood transfusions, prior pregnancies). My mom is rh+ and when I was born, I swallowed fluids during delivery. Could that cause me to be rh sensitized from birth? Thank you for your time.

And if getting the shots at routine times does that pretty such prevent hemolytic disease in the newborn?

Thank you for your video Dr Lee. I am wondering if you could help me with a question? I just had a miscarriage yesterday and the Dr checked my blood and said I am Rh sensitized due to a previous miscarriage a few years ago. I didn't know about the Rhogam shot back then and so I never took it. The Dr said this Rh sensitization is the most likely reason why I lost the current pregnancy, and the hospital gave me the Rhogam shot yesterday. They were in a rush so I didn't get a chance to ask any questions. Since I am already Rh sensitized, will this cause risks to future pregnancies even after taking the Rhogam shot this time? Does the effect wear off and should I keep getting the shot every few months while I am trying to conceive? It seems like most people wait until the second trimester to get the shot but in my case since I'm already sensitized I am worried this will keep causing me to miscarry early in pregnancy. Thanks for your advice!

Thanks for your comment. Rh disease (hemolytic disease of the fetus/newborn) was a major cause of fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality until rhogam was approved for use in 1968. This absolutely was always an issue, we just didn't have a test for Rh typing and treatment for it until the mid-20th century. Thankfully, with rhogam being so effective and readily available in the US, the number of deaths related to Rh disease reduced significantly. I was provided a Rhogam shot to prevent complications in future pregnancies. I keep hearing people say you can find out your blood type though a simple test at the clinic or doctors office. That's just not the case in my experience. I've had my blood type tested 'twice' in 20 years by 'two' different doctors and 'both' told me, NO, they cannot type my blood at the office or clinic. Instead, they required me to let them draw blood and send it to a lab to get it typed. Then the results were sent back to the Doctor and I get a bill from the lab. So, were they just lying to me about not being able to prick my finger and have it tested right there in the office? If so, then what are the odds that two different Doctors would do that? And why would they do that anyway?

Maybe the blood labs and the Doctors offices have a secret pact that they will force people to have their blood sent to a lab to get their blood type tested so that you have to pay the lab more money and then the Doctors get kickbacks for sending more business to the labs. Wouldn't surprise me at all if that were the case. I know for a fact that doctors have been known to push new drugs by big Pharmaceutical companies in return for free samples and discounts on the drugs they buy from them. The "for profit" medical community has always been corrupt as hell anyway.

Most clinics do not run blood tests themselves. They do indeed send out the blood. That is simply how it works in the US. My primary care office does not have the machinery or the techs to run blood typing, so it is sent to a nearby lab that will run the test, provide the result back to your doctor who will share it with you. The lab (maybe LabCorp or Quest) will then charge you for the test and your doctor may or may not charge you for a blood draw. In comparison, a big hospital will have the equipment and techs to run this type of testing. I suppose when I say simple, what I mean by that is any doctor can order it (it's not a specialty test), it can be processed by many labs in all states, and only takes a couple of days for results to come back. This is as opposed to a more challenging test like a genetic test, where only a specialist may be willing to order it, it could cost thousands of dollars, and only a few labs in the country may be able to run it, and it could take weeks or months to come back. Thanks for your question!

My daughter in law just had a spontaneous abortion. This is the second one in the last year. This time she actually went to the hospital and was told she’s RH neg. They gave her a rhogam shot even though she was in the process of losing the baby. She was only about 3 1/2 weeks pregnant. Same for the last time she had a spontaneous abortion. They told her the shot is good for 6 months but they were very, very vague about what that means. Actually they were very vague about a lot of things. My question is, will that rhogam shot decrease her chances of yet another sa if she gets pregnant again in the next 6 months? I have 4 kids so I’m not certain my son she’s married to has B pos blood but I’m 99% sure he is. Thanks for any advice or answer

  • @aqua6613

If she's had a pregnancy and lost it it may mean that blood from a possibly positive fetus may have gotten into her blood stream and her body may have developed antibodies which would attack the RH factors present which then would attack any that enter the body afterwards as in a rh positive baby. The rhogam shot surpresses this immune response to protect the baby. This is also answering a question I've had. I got pregnant last year but also lost it. The person an I broke up, but when we broke up he said we were not "compatible" and I just took that as ok cool were not compatible on a relationship basis...it wasn't until later I realized he is O+ and I am O-. I thought our relationship was actually not that bad because opposites can attract and he's an introvert and I'm an extrovert. The miscarriage really took a toll on me tho and I'm 43 so I've really counted myself out of the procreation pool 😆 Atleast now I suppose when dating, asking what blood type the potential partner is would be a quite valid question to ask 🤔 just never thought about it 😆 they may think I'm a vampire or something 😆

My guess would be that they gave it as a precaution not yet knowing your blood type or maybe they swapped your results with someone else's results on accident. The good news is Rhogam has minimal side effects.

  • @katieleecgctalksmiscarriage

Hey Jasmine. Thanks for your question. In the US, pregnant people who are Rh- and who who conceive with an Rh+ or Rh status unknown sperm source will get RhoGam shots during pregnancy which will essentially eliminate the risk for problems in the future pregnancies/babies. If a woman doesn't get RhoGam, risks for future pregnancies would be anemia and jaundice. Anemia can cause too little oxygen to be delivered to the baby. This can be treated with blood transfusion. Be sure to talk to your doctor if you have concerns about your rh type because this is a very avoidable complication in almost all cases.

Does the Rhogam change your blood Rh Type? I was told to get the shot when I married back in 1983, but I forgot. When I had my daughter 2 yrs later, they wouldn't let me leave the hospital till I got the injection, which I did. My records (since the birth of my child) show I am an O+, my daughter says she's A+. I have no clue what my husband is...and he never gets sick or goes to the doctor, so who knows what record there is of his blood type. For them to insist on me getting the Rhogam, wouldn't I have been O- previous?

Hey Bonnie! That is strange. No Rhogam does not alter your Rh status. I am not sure why they would have recommended if you are O+! Given it was a while back, I am guessing we may never know! I wonder if someone who was practicing in the eighties would have any insight into Rhogam recommendations at that time. Thanks for watching!

Hi Ryzza- I am so sorry for your losses. There are many different factors that can cause a miscarriage. Most people who have two losses will go on to have a healthy ongoing pregnancy. I would definitely suggest that you talk to your OB/GYN about your losses and whether they recommend any testing to see if a cause of your losses can be identified. It is very unlikely that bloodtype has anything to do with miscarriages. Different factors are likely at play.

Rh factor is an inherited protein found on the surface of blood cells. If your blood has the protein, you're Rh positive. A simple blood test can determine your status and your partner's status. I would meet with an OB/GYN to discuss this and request testing.
