Revolvers are my go to hands down !

On the reliability issue... I have been an avid shooter for about a half century, and was on active duty for ten years. As such. I have fired many tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition through a variety of fire arms, both civilian and military. I can say with absolute confidence that more than 99% of malfunctions that I have encountered were not due to the fire arm, but due to dud or damaged ammo. The other 1% were due to magazine failure. Revolvers have no magazine, each round is already chambered making dented/damaged rounds a non-issue, and dud rounds are cleared simply by another squeeze of the trigger. It is clear to me that revolvers are just way more reliable.

I agree except for the point we get talking about micro autos. I have had lots of issues with LCP style pistols even firing slow with a death grip on them. Big autos, especially 9mms are darn near 100% reliable, but the little pistols or the sub compact .45's with +P's have their own challenges.

1979-1981 I carried a Colt .45 Gov't model (Department Mandated), 1982-2009 I carried a S&W Model 586, .357 Magnum. From 2009 to present I carry a Glock 17, 9mm. As off-duty or ccw I have carried the Charter Arms 2", 5-shot .38 and currently the Walther PPK, .380. Point being; in my career I have carried a variety of weapons either by choice or Department Mandate. I can actually shoot ALL pretty much equally well. ALL have advantages and disadvantages and ALL will "do the job" if you practice and totally familiarize yourself with them. Like a woman, Love the one you're With. Arguing over which is "better" is moot if you become proficient with the one you Carry. Like Ford or Chevy or Blonde or Brunette. It's a personal choice and all will do just fine...

randy 109 This is more true in your situation maybe. IMO and shown true in a never expected home invasion I was very pleased I had a revolver. I grew up with guns and have shot both kind many times. The thing about the situation is fear for your life mode. It is not thinking or even good memory in that mode. No using the sights in the dark or the time to do that. The double action revolver only needs a pull of the trigger. Semi autos require chambering a round taking the safety off. The other important thing I learned just having fun with just my laser on my air soft pointing at knobs etc.. pressing the laser switch. It was point and shoot on target. I have read many armed citizen stories of those who empty their magazine not hitting or a 1 in and arm hit in the same room. Not in my case one shot one hit and my flashlight blinding them showing my sights on their forehead and empty hands saved their life and begging for it after charging at me in the dark. That practice that annoyed my significant other GF I was told after. Made her happy I did. One of the detectives patting me on the back said he would have killed him. I said I could have but had it in control and forensics may show me bad. He said he would have hit him 7 times before he hit the ground. I said strait faced to him THAT IS NOT RIGHT the protect and serve on the doors of your cars is propaganda shooting like that. Granted if shot at or charged with a knife or bat would be fine but I did it the proper way and if the blinded by my light had a gun in his hand I would have put one through his head my lit up sighs were steady on it. Until my light was lit on the intruder that slammed through the door I had little clear memory or thinking in fear of life mode. I had fired a shot from the hip head high i was unaware of when he broke through. Two empty casings and a notch in the door jamb showed me that hip shot. I also had my 6" barrel 357 mag loaded with frangible 38 special not to kill any neighbors or my family with a miss through the wall.

@@brianbirc First flaw to your analysis is , first of all you should always have a round in the chamber, period. Second of all a MASSIVE amount of the semi autos on the market dont have manual safety's like you suggested, and thirdly most well known brands of semis can either come with a laser grip or have the option to mount a laser or light of your choosing along with ability to put optics such as red dots acogs etc etc. So your argument is invalid in my opinion sir.

Can you name a few or even 1 semi auto without a safety? You would keep a round chambered without a safety switch? If you had one. Your argument and knowledge of firearms is as smart as the kids on the short bus to school son. There are ones that may be bought with a laser or red dot and many can put a light or laser on them but an acog lmao. When woken up in a home invasion you will enter fear for life mode. Your normal thinking is taken over with muscle memory and instant reaction is needed. From what I have experienced and read using sights does not happen often. Much less a ACOG scope that costs more than many guns in your house lmao. In your cartoon I would be worried about you shooting yourself or another living in your house grabbing your chambered semi auto with no safety then getting killed trying to find the intruder through your ACOG in the dark Monskied down. Don't comment on stuff you do not know much about. No safe switch on semi autos LOL Sorry short bus only revolvers with no safe switch and single action ones require you to pull the hammer back. I have used very many different non revolvers and every single one has a safe switch. If you see a gun do not touch it and notify an adult!

The first time I shot a semi-auto, I had to struggle to rack the slide. I eventually figured out the technique, but it was not immediately successful. I also limp-wristed at my first range session, and got a stove-pipe that had to be cleared. All of these issues can be overcome, but I decided revolver was the simple answer. If it doesn't affect effectiveness, simple is always better. Safer is always better too. On the revolver I can check my rounds, deal with misfires, load and unload, keep it loaded all the time, field strip the gun for cleaning ALL SAFELY. I'm not a police officer or soldier. Six for-sure .38+p bullets is the exact level of protection I need.

I'm a regular range customer with my Ruger SP101 & on occasion I'll rent an autoloader. It's funny when people who've never seen me with an automatic start to give me tips on using one. I just punch out the center bullseye & tell them, "You're a pretty good teacher,Frenchie!" (Rio Lobo reference)

I have both but never ever worry about the revolver failing to fire, that thought never enters my mind.

I love my wife more than my guns. But, we use/carry revolvers so we both are familiar with their operation. And less looking for a box of ammo in the gun safe. The same applies to my rimfire pistols,(revolvers). Thus, I love my wife and I WILL do anything to protect her when we are together. And I want her to feel safe when I’m not with her. She will protect me also! Gonna keep her too!

I agree with what Ayoob said. But there's something else: like all contrivances made by man, cartridges, too, are fallible. That's right; ammo is NOT ABSOLUTELY RELIABLE. You may not believe that there are such things as DUD ROUNDS, or that they are so rare as to be unworthy of consideration. Well, I beg to differ. Please consider the following facts. In my years as a gunsmith and serious hobbyist, I've seen lots of them. Mind you, I'm talking about new, factory rounds, not reloads or decades-old stuff. Now, if you encounter one of these as your FIRST SHOT in a desperate self-defense scenario, you WON'T HAVE TIME to realize you have a failure to fire, and then jack the slide of your automatic to chamber a fresh round. The bad guy will not politely stand by while you go through these steps; he'll just kill you! With a revolver, on the other hand, when you pull the trigger again (you will do this instinctively, no matter what kind of gun you're holding), another round will come up. This can save your life.

Howard Rob I agree and ad that at very close range with the barrel against the intruders body of some semi autos the will not fire I have read and heard about. Revolvers can pay off in fear of life mode. Point and shoot ability in this mode in the dark is a big + as well I learned from an invasion. I learned it with my laser mounted push button sight for fun on the couch. Glad I did when I defended my life in a home invasion. Read many armed citizen stories of magazines empty with no hit in the same room.

Moreover, let us not forget that if a bullet jumps its crimp in the revolver, the game's over. If the cylinder binds? The game is over. You won't be able to get it unbound in any timely fashion, if at all, whereas you can clear semi-auto malfs rather easily with basic training. No one ever wants to discuss these occurrences when they're singing the virtues of the revolver I've noticed.

Bradley Slackenfelch That is a good point for those with enough experience and training. However I think it is rare for a revolver to malfunction like that. The plus side of the revolver is when in fear for life mode unless you have a lot of that training to become instinct I am not very confident in it. The fear mode takes the thinking you shoot at a range with away. The revolver is chambered and only requires squeezing the trigger. No chambering a round or safety switch. For someone not very experienced it could be better. The other large part of the fear of life mode is the ability to point and shoot. In low to no light condition and things happening fast you do not think like normal. I have read many armed citizen stories where magazines are emptied with out take down or any hits. I unexpectedly had to defend my home once and am glad I learned point and shoot. I did it just for fun with my laser press and light mounted on an air soft in my house. Annoyed my GF but turned out very helpful one night. Not saying you should use a revolver use what you prefer. For some without much training or practice the revolver is a good choice. It will fire pushed against an intruder as well.

the same with a pistol if you have a squib ammo and the bullet jammmed your barrel, you are dead; and if you have stove-pipe jam, or a double feed you are also dead- Just using your own dose of medicine. Those you mentioned will not happened- jump its crimp, the cylinder binds.you just want to state anything to denigrate.What if will say also that what if the slide of your pistol will break or the slide pin will break letting your upper receiver blown away separating from the lower receiver, you are dead; and what I stated already happened. What about your comment any proof?

This got me thinking. I currently have 4 semi-auto (counting my wife's Walther PK 380), and only 2 revolvers! The solution to this conundrum is rather obvious. LINDA!!! I'm going shopping!

Carry both. I take more of the Josey Wales approach.

Unless I am in the woods, large auto backed by snub nose revolver, large revolver backed up by pocket auto, and in the woods ...large revolver, small revolver and rifle all in 38/357.

Nothing beats the 3" inch K-Frame .357 magnum. It is the _only_ handgun _ever made_ that is effective from *zero* to *one hundred* yards. It's a pity that now they are *almost impossible* to find.

How right you are! The FBI found this out the hard way. They traded in their 6-shot S&W M13 .357 with a 3-inch barrel -- an excellent weapon -- for a high-capacity "wonder-nine." This mis-guided choice subsequently got several agents killed in the infamous 1986 shootout.

faffafunkie LOL realy? How many 100 yard hits on target have you made with a 3" snub nose 357 magnum? Most only practice with 38 special with the kick of 357 mag out of a light snub nose. I understand and know the great long range capability of 357 mag from my 6" barrel but never heard of any 100 yard accuracy of it or others from a snub nose. Please do tell and is there verification of 100 yard snub nose shooting? Not dissing the take down power of 357 mag and longer rage from a fast round just long range short barrel shooting.

Rollo Lawson I do not know about effective range I think it is close to the longer barrel like a 6". The range I am speaking of is how hard it is to hit a target further out. The 3" is good for concealment and the speed out the barrel for personal defense is plenty and not an issue. The difference is for longer distance shooting the longer barrels are easier to hit targets at more distance. The measurement between front and rear sight and weight of the gun. It depends on what you want to use it for what is best.. Hunting the long barrel defense carry the short both the mid length. This is common with other calibers too. The faster rounds like 357 mag are good for both needs. .

personal opinion--my snub nosed Security Six would give your K frame a run for its money

I am shooting guns for 36 years now. Army rifles (mostly 5.56), 9mm handguns for practical shooting, and other semi-autos ranging from 0.22 Beretta to Desert Eagle 0.50AE which I owned for years. With all these guns I always had failures, mostly due to inadequate ammo which is very common in my small country. Bad ammo can be deformed while loading, or cause subsequent reloading issues. It is probably quite easy to find reliable gun and ammo dealers in the US, but in other places this might not be true, and you never know what you are getting.... I am carrying a revolver now, because I want to make sure that when I pull the trigger, a bullet comes out... For a regular civilian, reliability is usually not in cases like firing when the gun is full of mud, when you are in a multi shooters hand gun battle, or when you simply compare 2 perfect brand new modern guns. Reliability should be measured when you did not look at your old gun for 3 years (and let's face it, this is the common case), and in a split of an unprepared second have to take it out of your pants and pull the trigger...

For me, the only clear advantage to the auto over the revolver is the capacity and to some extent reload speed, though revolver speed loaders mitigate this. I can understand though why police and military, who could face protracted gun battles, would choose this. For conceal carry, I think my 7 shot, Smith, 357 mag. is perfect for me.

A revolver is still harder to train with. A heavy trigger and a speed loader with rattling rounds can prove to be a challenge. I practice regularly so I’m aware of this.

I was trained with a S&W Model 10, 38 spl with a 6" barrel. I carried this gun as my Duty Weapon for 10 years and I became very proficient with a Revolver. I also carried a S&W Model 638 as my EDC when I was off duty. In my last 10 years of employment, my agency allowed us to carry semi auto pistols and I switched to a Glock 19 as my duty weapon which I used until retirement. In my experience using both the Revolver and the semi auto, I found the Revolver to be just as accurate as the semi auto and I qualified every year at the top of my class. If I had to do it all again, I would choose the G 19 as my duty weapon but IMO the revolver would not be my choice, only because of the firepower of a 15 + 1 round count with 4 extra magazines. I still carry my S&W at times in my carry rotation along with my G 43.

Yes, I like guns in the G19 size. It's perfect size and sort of like the size of a 3" revolver.

38 short-barreled revolver has advantages for MY PERSONAL situation. I can keep it in my pocket or on my ankle, it is the gun most likely to be with me if I take a short trip to get milk., etc. But what's more important, I can pass it to my wife and she can use it. The double-action revolver is a simpler mechanism with less chance for human-caused error under stress. It is easy to have on my person, and forgiving with maintenance and operation. The "family" nightstand gun is a 4inch barrel .357 magnum, loaded with 38+p (wife friendly). She shoots it well. 6 rounds of 38+p at your disposal gives an edge that we're happy with, because these are to be used in case of civilian emergency, not "go to war". I have other guns, but these I consider foundational.

Rollo Lawson Thanks for the comment. To answer your question unfortunately no I haven't regained much of my strength or dexterity. Yes I have always trained with my non dominate hand as well. I've worn many hats over the last several years many of them required extensive firearms training and practice each week to ensure I got to go home at the end of the day. I still miss doing my job and retiring at my age was difficult to deal with. Right now I'm still learning how to function with many mobility issues. Maybe one day I will be able to teach others with physical handicaps how to defend themselves as well. I might as well utilize this training and help others at least that's what my new dream is.

The "clear winner" was personal choice. Carry one, carry the other, or carry both at the same time! Whatever suites you best in the given situation or what you are most comfortable and competent with. Hi-cap nine for spray-n-pray and a .44 mag. with hard cast lead loads for car bodies and dangerous wildlife? A .38 snub on the ankle backing up your .45 auto main carry? Mix and match, baby. That's the "clear winner!"

Thank God I have both, A Glock 19 auto and a smith model 36 5 shot revolver, To date haven't had to use either in a self defense situation but carry both at different times.

I think I have 5 each of both lol, stacked up too tight in a lock box too small.

Regardless of which a person chooses there is no substitution for being properly trained which is extremely rare for the majority of gun owners. Owning a firearm no way qualifies one to use it effectively and is a liability. For the average home owner, a revolver is the way to go. It's much safer!

I carry a snobby revolver in my pocket in a holster and 380 hidden ccw the revolver is an instant reload. I use +P ammo in both.

To me the 642 is perfect. Small. Never an issue. I lose accuracy but shooting at a distance will put you in jail more times than not.

1911 with the safety permanently filed off - The weight is a sign of reliability... if it does not work, you can always hit him with it.

1,500 rounds through my 642 last year and presently working on more shooting practice. It’s to easy to put one in the perpetrator and 3 into bystanders. Wow! How did I miss, is the drill.

my grandfather in law bestowed upon me three handguns. Two semi automatics (both s&w semi autos, model 39 and 52) and a S&W model 10 (*revolver). The only one that shot straight and true after three decades in storage was the model 10. the two semi autos required an overhaul and lube job.

Primary off duty/CCW weapon- Glock26. Back up weapon- Ruger LCR 357mag front left pocket. 2 is 1 and 1 is none. But if I could carry only one it would be the G26.

I carry both sometimes at the same time with the revolver as the primary. I carry often a 327 Fed or 45 Colt in a carry bag and a 380 in a pocket holster. I carry the SAA on Daily basis. The best gun to carry if you can conceal it is the one you know best. I live on sand, that is a problem for auto. I use a speed loaders except on the SAA I use speed strips for it but I would do a NY Reload first with the 380 ACP River from my pocket. I feel it depends on what you are familiar with and what you can physically handle the best. You can change sights you don't like in low light but you can't do a lot if the grip to trigger reach is a problem

you know the often repeated if you drop your revolver in mud or sand it won't work but an auto will needs to be proven. I used to go shooting on a river bank years ago high winds were a common occurrence there and sand would get all over my guns the sand would cause malfunctions in my automatics occasionally it also caused problems with bolt action rifles infact only my revolvers and a lever action rifle seemed impervious to the elements on the river.

I carry a revolver and an auto and shot gun, a zipp gun and a flint lock at all times, just to be safe!

A big problem with semi autos is "limp wrist jams" when shooting in high stress situations. Most police officers do not practice and shoot just enough to qualify.

That guy seriously knows his stuff, trust me.

Remember one of the most famous and successful gunfighters of all time (Wild Bill Hickok) used his colt 1851 navy in .36 caliber to great effect. That combination of ball and black powder was equal to a 380 acp round in power!

To me, the only disadvantage of a revolver is its few ammo, usually 6, in the cylinder chamber; while a pistol can have 14 +1 in the magazine. But a pistol has more possible disadvantages like jams- stove-pipe,double feed, or failure to fire which if happens will take a few seconds to realized it for the firer to do malfunction cure. The revolver will just continue pressing the trigger and there will be no problem about failure to fire. The problem which i know is the same with both revolver and pistol is when they have a squib ammo and the bullet will lodge inside the barrel. both firearm can sustain bulging barrel once they fired the next round. I believe that a revolver and pistol are equal until after 6, 5 or 7 rounds. Beyond this number of rounds the pistols, especially high capacity one have the advantage. But in a shoot and scoot situation the high capacity advantage of a pistol is negated because the revolver can reload while on cover. If in a CQB, say at 5 meters, both are equal- booth of them are dead, incapacitated or one is dead and we don't know who,

For me capacity isn't a huge concern. If I were law enforcement it would be. Non law enforcement shootings average 3 shots fired. If I were in that average, what's the difference if I have 3 left over or 14 left over?

I would like to add something to this list of "things that can go wrong when the worst case scenario happens (gunfight)". It was mentioned how a semi-auto can be taken out of battery by pressing the slide partially rearward. This is certainly true, but I offer a similar issue that CAN happen with only a revolver. If the other guy were to grab your gun, and if he does we know it will be with a death grip, and if his hand is wrapped around the frame and cylinder that could prevent the cylinder from turning as you squeeze the trigger. In a DA (un-cocked) situation if the cylinder can't rotate than it can't fire. The cylinder rotation is synced with the hammer cocking and releasing so if no turn then no bang. So it would appear that each design has a similar flaw though not exactly the same scenario definitely the same sort of circumstance where you are hand to hand with your enemy and you have a gun your trying to use. I am very impartial on this debate and don't even consider it debate worthy as this is a simple matter of personal preference. I also have no stake in what you choose to own, carry, shoot, or anything else. In fact, I have WAY more experience with auto's than with revolvers, and yet I am lately growing more attracted to revolvers for no real logical reason. I just like the snub nose .38 and that's all the reason I need to get one. :). From a purely practical standpoint I should probably just get a Glock 19 and lots of practice with it. Since I can own more than one gun I don't have to be practical. I can be nostalgic and own things just because I think they're cool. Damn it's good to live in a place where we can do that. :)

A revolver will always be a problem solver.

They both have great points to them as well as negatives. Both have their place as self defense and concealed carry guns, and each type is better suited for various different environments and tasks. But I feel no matter what type one chooses, they need to be extremely familiar with it, and train to the point of developing muscle memory, so that in a high stress situation, you'll be able to be more effective and lessen the chance of being slowed down or making a mistake due to the stressful situation, which can easily cost you your life.

I have a Kimber 1911 and I just want a Kimber dasa k6s 2 inch with an exposed hammer for a little collection. Kimbers are so nice!

Carry both types .. feel safe with both.. practice with both .. I use for self defense so large capacity less of an issue .. revolver at bedside for bumps in the night .. Glock 19 when walking in a mall where I might be caught in an active shooter(s) incident .. Ruger .357 LCR for running at night.. I don’t wear the same clothes every day so I don’t carry the same weapon every day.. love all of them.. the only one I’ve used in actual self defense is a 9mm Smith&Wesson Shield with a laser .. flawless

As self-defense expert Claude Warner States.. military/police use .. is a complete different mission than civilian self-defense.. a soldier most likely will be facing many adversaries.. police must pursue in neutralize/ arrest the bad guy in are much more likely to be up against multiple targets... Civilian use most likely one two or possibly three at the most adversaries your only mission is to make them go away! Either neutralize them or they turn and run.. you will not be pursuing them.. many HI -CAP enthusiasts believe they're going to be Bruce Willis up against Hans Gruber in his gang..😂... 99.999 percent of the time it will be one or two adversaries trying to rob you at extremely close range... This is the place for the revolver... I have never had a revolver lock up on me.. a well-made will cleaned well lubricated revolver with proper ammo.. is not going to lock up.. I have however experienced stoppages or jams with a semi... Deeply burned into my memory was two DOUBLE FEEDS.. EXPERIENCE WITH MY FRIENDS PPK ONE SHOOTING SESSION.. the tap rack it's not going to clear that jam.. you must lock the slide open..(in the case of the PPK you must hold it open with one hand).. stick something into the ejection port and push round number two back into the magazine .. so that you can drop the magazine and clear round number one... This happens in the middle of a firefight especially at close range with lead flying at you or a knife coming at you YOU'RE DEAD! NOPE I'D RATHER ON A REVOLVER..SIX (OR 5 OR 7 OR 8 ) FOR SHURE !

Usually. If i'm going to a larger city at night i'll carry a 15+1 semi auto.

I don't see how a Revolver is obsolete when people still carry knives, clubs, and baseball bats as weapons. I think that all of us could agree that a good Smith &Wesson, Ruger, or Colt would be a superior weapon compared with a non- gun for a life and death self defense situation.

Well your last few read sentences say what I do. Carry one of each. I love the revolver, and the semiautomatic. Shoot the ammo I use twice a week and know the guns inside out. Great vid!

The semi auto is the more tactically advantageous of the two platforms if you have the time, money and desire to maintain your training in your hand gun's opperation. I'm of the opinion that the simplicity of the revolver is the best platform for those who have not the money, time, or discipline to maintain their training.

Another reason one may choose to use a revolver is an injury effecting the hands. I was an avid semiauto shooter until I suffered a injury to my cervical spine and had to have an emergency surgery. After I woke up my hand strength and dexterity were gone. When I got home I realized that racking the slide was next to impossible even after months of recovery and practicing. Fortunately for me I had a Ruger Security Six at the house and found that though I had some major loss of strength I could still grip a weapon and pull the trigger. A gun is a tool like any other. With proper use and practice it will do the job it was manufactured to do. I for one am very glad there are options available even for me a 37 year old with some annoying limitations.

Tactical doesn’t have anything to do with it. People who want to have a gun for protection when they go to the grocery store don’t need a tactical gun with 15 rounds. Idk where this idea is coming from that you are going to be attacked by 5 guys and need 15 rounds and a spare magazine. It’s ridiculous, 2 rounds is all you’ll really need if you need a gun at all and chances are if you carry every day of your life and never have to unholster your gun anyway.

I have had to unholster my cow firearm 2x in 20 years neither time did I have to fire it. The punks yelled "He has Gun"and headed North as fast as their feet could carry them. I was heading out of Wal-Mart before Sun rise with a cart and they pulled knives. I stepped between cars to force them to turn and let them see the gun. End of story. The other time a few years later was almost them same. What is important is to keep yo2 head on a swivel and beware of your surroundings at all times

Wow! Massad Ayoob is a name I remember from further back than I care to admit, lol. I used to LOVE his articles on stopping power. He was the go to source for statistics on gunfights and how various ammo performed. This was around `80s to maybe mid `90s, for me. If I was to organize a panel of "experts" on firearms for self defense or law enforcement he would be among my short list along with Paul Harrell, whom I assume you know of if you're watching this. In fact he would be the first person I would think of. Nobody has studied this subject more than him. Thanks for sharing this article/piece with us Sam.

Nobody likes loading the clips of an autoloader. On the other hand, loading a revolver can be its own joy.

I carry a S&W model 10-5 6 shot k frame in 38 special, I load Underwood 38+p GDHP , and am complete confident I am well armed !

Only issue with a revolver is when it goes down it’s usually a cylinder issue and then the gun becomes a hitting tool. When a auto goes down it can be a number of things but not always catastrophic. To me that’s the big difference! That being said I still carry my .357 snubby every day.

Revolvers are so reliable they fire when you don't want them to! This is strictly a poke at the situation on the Rust movie set. We all know most revolvers won't fire without pulling the trigger unless the sear has been screwed with.

I think for the average owner the advantages of a semi auto aren't necessary. First off I think one should just avoid situations where you might be in a sustained shooting fire fight, just say'n. In which case you don't need the higher capacities of semi autos. Secondly revolvers are safer for the average owner because of their simplicity. Less chance of shooting yourself do to a unseen bullet left in the chamber or leaving the safety off when you thought it was on.

That's what I try to tell people, but we still have these regular folks with 15+1 and 3 backup mags. I mean, whatever the 2nd amendment allows you to choose, but to me it seems sill to go with that much ammo for a 2 shot need.

When it comes to Auto pistols Vs Wheel guns, the safest thing you can do is cut the sper of the hammer and use it dubbel action only, because it is possible to make a mistake when dekocking a wheel gun and having a negligent discharge, now no matter what type of gun you choose you should carry more than one, and that gives you the option of carrying both types of guns if you choose to, the safest way to carry an Auto pistol is unchambered, and there's no point in having an Auto pistol unless it's a high capacity dubbel stack mags and that will only be a full size gun, and a J Frame 357mag is the best backup for the Auto pistol or big wheel gun,,so the best 2 ways to go is ,carry only dubbel action only wheel guns, or carry Both types start with a wheel gun like an L Frame 357mag snubie then transition to Auto pistol if you need more ammo yet still having a J Frame 357mag for backup , anyone could carry 4 guns

I am round and so is my weapon. ;) Seriously both have a place.

The best gun for anyone is one YOU can handle.

Yeah. I actually CCW revolvers but have 5" pistols for home defense. People often ask why, and it's simple. A large semi auto pistol is "better" than a large revolver basically, both are near 100% reliable, both have top dog cartridges that do about the same thing like .357 Mag and .357 Sig but the semi auto holds more ammo. For actual CCW forget about it. There isn't going to be a deep conceal or pocket semi auto that is even close to the reliability of a small pocket revolver. Six for sure VS 2 then a tap rack bang has been my experience.

Don't get me wrong I prefer the revolver over the auto but the one thing that a lot of people do is practice with lite loads and the load it with heavy loads to use for self defense So you must practice with the loads you are going to use A revolver is a lot easier to teach a new shooter on then an auto loader And the 1911 is the worst pistol to teach a new shooter to shoot

1911 and revolvers are great guns but the truth is most people are not skilled enough in there gum handling to properly run them . They often damge the guns threw mishandling and lack of knowledge . I would never by a 1911 or a revolver second hand unless I know the owner was a true gunsmen

How do they damage them? All i know is dont top off 1911 with loose round to avoid extractor damage, and dont slam a cylinder shut, especially after spinning it.

According to Mas, to declare a winner is to ignore the complexity of the issue and to miss the fact that different situations call for different tools.

Have both, Taurus 7 shot .357 revolver, H&K 9mm auto. Always worried what if that first shot jammed, then what? Home defense I'll grab my .357

Maybe you have heard already, but it's "hackneed." .

It's never enough carrying all sorts of guns. Better being prepared than exposed. I would even conceal more, to the sleeves, as a pendant, in the boots, everywhere.

My favorite revolver is a 6-inch Smith & Wesson 357 magnum. My favorite semi-automatic is a 6-inch Heckler & Koch USP 45 acp.

@@GunSam I too, have heard that an unmodified 6-inch Heckler & Koch USP 45 acp Elite is good for .45 Super ammo. Last month, I purchased a box of 200 grain Underwood Xtreme Penetrator .45 Super solid copper ammo that I will try in my 45 Hi-Point before I even think of shooting it in my H&K.

Colt 1911 Govt. Or Colt Python, that’s it for me. But like CT once said “Make mine semi auto single action”.

I still prefer a revolver for home defense.

The clear winner: Yes. 357 LCR in my pocket and G19 in my waistband.

So the answer is: Both of them. Once again lol : )

Thats what I heard, LOL.

If it came down to a duel with only one round of ammunition, then I'm going with a 4 inch revolver. Seen too many semi auto's malfunction. I have and carry both and in the end its personal choice.

The argument over revolver vs auto is irrelevant. With an pistol one needs to run more drills, reloading, slide, tapping the the mag. With a revolver the only drill is stress reloading. Both are irrelevant in a home defense / self defense because the average gun fight is 3 rounds or less. Therefore one would probably not worry about jams or misfeeds with a pistol or reloading with a revolver.

Price $$$

If you want more than 6 rounds ready to go out the barrel You can carry 2 six round revolvers. At the same time you have a backup gun in case something goes wrong with the first one! And if you have them in diferent places on your person that is handy when you may not be able to get to one for some reason or another, in the car, siting in a chair. Do yourself a favor! Practice shooting with both hands! One hand may be injured at some time and you will have to adjust to shooting with the other. GUNSMITH, FFL, VIETNAM VETERAN, ARMY INFANTRY!!!

If you are going to carry firearm you should carry the one you are familiar with and shoot best. End of argument. If you are not a top notch shooter carry will probably get you killed so carry a baseball bat or a tire iron (or simply avoid altercation).

A couple of horses or a pick up truck? both get the job done but one has technological advantages.If the revolver was superior the auto loader would have never been invented.Why not use a musket ball rifle? Because we have the technology.

+Joshua Bisson BUT in the 1986 FBI Miami incident, it was the revolvers, loaded with 38 SPL +P 158 gr LSWC-HP ammo, that dropped BOTH bad guys, and ended the shootout, AFTER the 9mm auto's had multiple failures to stop (12+ 9mm hits that failed to stop). SO what is perceived as "superior" technology often isn't as good as "old, proven, technology" that actually works. The old street-proven 38 SPL LSWC-HP's WORKED, while the "New Tech" 115gr JHP 9mm ammo failed totally. The 9mm is a great pistol, provided the ammo is good. The 1986 9mm ammo was no good at all.

Let me add ease of use. Women and me too. I am 66 and arthritis can make any gun an issue. I can pull the 642 and even hold it in 1 hand. No one knows I have it on me BTW

You can fire more than one shot from inside your coat pocket with a revolver --- semi-automatic will like jam on ejection.

@@jorgesolis9468 Even if it is an external hammer. I have seen it done. The hammer does not necessarily bind on the pocket, but with a semiautomatic there is not room for the casing to clear the slide.

New Jersey police switched from revolvers to semi-auto after a State Trooper with a revolver was shot and killed by criminals on the highway because they had more rounds in their guns. It made sense for police at the time, and probably still does because they are exempt from the law limiting magazine capacities. For non-exempt civilians, the capacity of a semi-automatic is less of an issue since the lawful capacity is not that much greater.

@@Lucifer-oe2nm -- If I recall correctly, the Trooper was alone (generally, the patrol alone over large distances), and stopped a vehicle with three persons, all armed with high capacity 9mm. Basically, it came down to 6 rounds for the Trooper against anywhere from 45 to 60 for the criminals.

I own approximately 40 handguns evenly split between revolvers & automatics . But if I could have only one(1) handgun it would make sense to have a gun that could fire different cartridges . Different cartridges offer you versatility .Versatility provides self-defense potential as well the ability to hunt in order to sustain life itself . The way I see it there are only two (2) choices to pick from . A firearm chambered in .44mag/.44special or .357mag/.38special . Needless to say they would both have to be in a revolver configuration in order to reliably fire the cartridges they're capable of containing . So for me , the Revolver is Top-Gun !

My GF just posted that because this is YT and the short buss anti gun people or even those looking for their view of guns ans owners with the nonsense terminology to confuse those who do not know about guns calling it an auto may seem to the unknowing it is a machine gun.

Auto-loading pistol. Shooters call them autos. Semi-automatic action. The only bad part about the headline is a non-gunner might think it's a revolver vs. a car! :) OK, that's a stretch. Great report. I teach CCW. You can't beat a revolver for reliability. I recommend the LCR in .38 Special, because the LCR in .357 has brutal recoil. I've had almost every pistol brand jam, and yes, it's often the ammo, but that will be small comfort to your heirs if you die because of it!

One thing I would like to say when you pushed the semi-auto in the palm of your hand and took it out of battery I think most everyone that carries a semi-auto knows that and it's easy to over come you don't shove your gun in like that! When I see people talk about things like that I think of my combat & small arms Instructor if some one gets that close to you, you deserve an ass whipping!! 13 is better then 6 any day of the week so for my money semi is better hands down!!

While that might be true, most people in that situation are probably women that are not as trained. But I did a video a couple years ago and made a short about it a few days ago, and even backing the pistol back, somehow-someway, the 9mm muzzle blast sucked fabric in from the clothed dummy and it jammed up the pistol with fabric between the slide hole and barrel. Tried with a revolver, no problems.

Hack-need.

Most modern pistols never fail with defensive ammo. Plus how hard is tap and rack? 😂 Revolvers are sexy.
