Revisiting Lulu | Metallica & Lou Reed's Best Album!?!?

Doing another one of my casual chats about a weird album from a classic rock and metal band. Today, we'll be talking about Metallica and Lou Reed's 2011 foray into art-metal, "Lulu." Now if you were there at the time, the record was savaged brutally at the time. But! Is it really that bad? Were people just not ready for the avant-garde nature of the record? Should we reassess this album? Tune in to find out (and subscribe to my main channel for longer form music content + original music ‪@NAETEMUSIC‬ )

Lou Reed is one of the 2 solo rock artists ive loved the most in my whole lifetime. There are parts of Lulu i think are damagingly great, parts of it that i think, Geez thats powerful music and vocals together.

As one of the handful of Lulu defenders, thanks for this video. i think a few of the lyrics are questionable and eyeroll/cringe-worthy; outside of that, i think the album is an exploration of a person who has compartmentalized their body and their brain, in order to survive. They hope to feel love, but have resisted it for so long, that anyone who attempts to get close is rejected. The album merges from the character Lulu, into Lou Reed himself, by the time you get to Junior Dad, a haunting track that is, to me, a perfect ending to this album, and the perfect song for Lou Reed to go out on. i defend Junior Dad like i defend St. Anger. As a person who is WAY more into Metallica than Lou Reed, i thought this album was a perfect combination. i first heard the album in 2014, and immediately had a visceral reaction. Years later, after a severely traumatic incident, i took in the album in a much more appreciative way. People consistently complain about Metallica 'selling out'. But this album is literally the antithesis of that. i think the uncompromising artistic risks they take (whether it's the Loads, St. A, S&M, Lulu or whatever) make them better as musicians. i don't think people have to LIKE Lulu (and in the end most people won't); but the least they can do is respect it.

Happy for you in how you're able to set your scope to be able to enjoy this album. I still can't get behind it despite some moments I liked: - some riffs from Frustration, Dragon, Mistress Dread - Iced Honey isn't so bad a track - maybe if they trimmed things down by quite a bit, it wouldn't have been so messy ; but that's James and Lars for you, they have problem putting the last button on a song. Great video and I hope you get far!

If you let me work the history backwards I can prove to you that Metallica could NOT exist without Lou Reed! Every Metallica fan knows their debut "Kill 'Em All" came out in 1983. Every Metallica fan also knows they took their cue from the NWOBHM scene 1979-82 (Diamond Head, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden) The New Wave of British Heavy Metal took its cue from the DIY ethics of the first British Punk scene 76-78(the Sex Pistols, the Damned , the Clash) The UK punks took their cue from the early New York punk scene 73-76 (the New York Dolls, Patti Smith, the Ramones) And EVERY New York band took its cue from Lou Reed's old band the Velvet Underground (active with Reed 65-70)!

In an Australian music shop they had a little note next to the Lulu album that said "Buy this dross if you're a cunt." Someone should have stopped them releasing this. Someone in the studio, the guitar tech, Bob Rock... hell even Dave Mustaine should have rung up and said "fellas knock this regrettable shit on the head." That was an embarrassing mess.
