When played live, "Frantic" and "St Anger" itself.. sound really good. Proper snare sound in conjunction with the rest of the live set, proper good guitar tone, and Hetfield nailing the vocals right on the money. Really believe that, with a good bit of editing, Kirk laying down some structured soloing, better production and making Invisible Kid invisible from the album, it could have been genuinely good. I've always been on the fence with Load/Reload. Taking the highlights from each and turning them into one release... and I think you have a killer rock album. But I think on a lot of tracks they come across as imitating a loose, southern bluesy thing without really nailing the vibe. For lack of a better term, those albums needed to be a little more sloppy and a little less precisely produced. But in the grand scheme of things, I do think they've aged better then a lot of the "thrash only" fans give them credit for.

PS- I think that album would have been Metallica's greatest album (greatest thrash album?) if it had a brighter production with more depth (and some bass wouldn't hurt) because in order to appreciate richness of complex intricate music, you should make it more attractive for a listen to really pour the listener in, like Rush, Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, King Crimson. The bloody production sucks the blood out of this great work that I can't and many more can't appreciate.

Secondly, it increased my drumming speed, discipline, and dedication to learning songs and grooves at an early age. Typing this while watching the video, and LuLu is most definitely The Room of albums, however I’ve gone back to watch The Room 3-4x, as much can not be said about that horrid album. Yeah ranking kill em all anywhere under classic tier is just objectively wrong. That album literally invented the thrash metal genre (slayer at that time was closer to first wave black metal and anthrax was more traditional heavy metal). Songs like seek and destroy, no remorse, hit the lights, four horsemen, motorbreath, and whiplash are not only some of the best metallica songs, but some of the most important metal songs ever released. The entire tracklist is legendary. It's considered one of the best debut releases by any band in history. Also the production fucking kicks ass, especially considering when it was released. In 1983 that guitar tone was mind blowing. Even by today's standards it still sounds pretty good. If it had "better" production, it would not be nearly as heavy. The rawness is as much part of the songwriting as the riffs themselves. I don't see how anyone can think it sounds bad unless all they listen to is overproduced djent shit that's compressed to hell. Kill Em All is what a REAL band sounds like. It's a bunch of dudes picking up real guitars, plugging into real amps, pressing record on the tape and playing the absolute SHIT out of them. No plugins or DAW's needed. That's what true metal is about

Good video dude, I am always interested in hearing younger fans than me how they got into Metallica and what album they came in on. For me I really consider the first five albums classic Metallica, and for the last decade or maybe even really sense St. Anger it felt like when they would go on tour it would be three or four songs off whatever album they were touring and then the rest of the set list would be from the first five albums, and Fuel. I guess the reason why I’m into fans of Metallica that didn’t become a fan during their first decade is because everyone my age or older I’ve already heard the same shit for 35 years now and I’m just tired of them, looking at the heavy metal handbook and telling me the same fucking answer. they’re my favorite band. I listen to a lot of different genres of music though, but mainly metal and hip-hop. I will admit I really don’t listen to a lot of the newer metal stuff really passed the mid 2000s. But I like hearing other peoples opinion and you’re absolutely right I really don’t hang out with other metal fans anymore because they have more rules than the Catholic Church when it comes to what’s accepted and what isn’t and it doesn’t feel like a lot of original thoughts go around. For the most part, it’s a fan base of people that actually judge other people and their character completely based on what kind of music they listen to . But yeah, that was actually pretty interesting. You are the first person I have ever heard say they came into Metallica as a fan during the St. Anger era. I really tried to like that album by the way, but after a month I was like “OK I get it you guys went through a lot, still my favorite band, but this album and it lol” But to be fair other than maybe Dr. Dre I can’t think of any artist that every album they put out I loved, and Dr. Dre is kind of cheating because he only puts out one album a decade so if you’re only going to put out three albums in 35 years they better be good . But yeah, I can’t wait to check out the rest of your channel man. Keep out the good work brother.

I used to think that …And Justice For All was the best one, and then when I started to learn those solos and riffs (kinda my first introduction into actually competently playing metal) I started to notice that, while the song structure and licks themselves are gushing with creativity and passion, the solos are actually pretty lack luster sometimes when compared to that standard. Most of the solos follow (in my opinion) sort of the same pattern of beginning with a phrygian/melodic minor slow sound and then transition into some super energetic blues solo which, while super awesome, does start to lose its luster when you’ve heard it 1000 times.

I agree almost with your list. I would say Ride the Lighting is the greatest album followed by a very close second, Master of Puppets and the Black rounding the top three. S&M goes in the excellent tier.

The problem that I have with Ride The Lightning is that I feel like it's tracks "Trapped Under Ice" and "Escape" are fillers compared to the rest of the album but outside from that I think that it belongs to Metallica's holy trinity together with "Kill Em' All" and "Master Of Puppets" ("Master Of Puppets" is my favorite Metallica following "Kill Em' All" and then "Ride The Lightning")

Don't hate this dude at all, very interesting to watch his videos but how is Whiplash and Phantom Lord forgettable? Metal Militia I get, it's pretty boring but Whiplash has that fast paced headbangy tune, very remember-able and probably one of the best of the album. Phantom Lord is for sure my favourite song in the album and one of my favourite Metallica song, it immediately starts off it a very unforgettable riff and solo and then boom, amazing haunting interlude, straight back to a badass solo. Just amazing, most memorable of the album along with Seek and Destroy.

Deat MagnetIC is one of my personal favorites, people really hate on It way more than it deserves and other simply forget it even exists. Totally with you on the black album, overtime I hear a song off of it there´s just something special that pops off instantly.

Great video man. As a huge Metallica fan, even though I don't fully agree with this, I get where you're coming from and I respect everything you said in this. I agree that the black album had a huge impact on metal for many reasons (and any talk about them selling out with it is just BS) so I get why you have it at the top. My changes would be 1) swapping Justice for Black (to me Justice and Puppets are peak Metallica). Justice is my favorite album so yeah... And black still deserves to be on excellent and above. 2) Move death magnetic to excellent because I think it's severely underrated. I always saw it as Justice 2.0. It's only held back by the awful production but the songs are amazing to me. Everything else pretty much the same, maybe some minor changes but very close to yours. Again, respect your opinions man. Keep making awesome content.

Woah, that's a cool idea about DM being AJFA 2.0 - I can kind of see that! AJFA is my #1 with KEA+MOP close behind. I wouldn't raise DM to excellent but I'd put it in good tier.

For me ride the lightning is the greatest, the tone and the intensity of the riffs fight fire with fire, trapped under ice and creeping death but my number 1 song will always be battery on master of puppets hands down

Great video Mike! I think "The Black Album" outsold "The Dark Side of the Moon" in the U.S. with a higher RIAA certification status. If we're talking about worldwide sales, I believe Pink Floyd wins! :) Sure, that Floyd album was released 18 years earlier...

People say AJFA is their best album because it's seen as a sort of "crescendo" of their career, especially because of Blackened and One. It was also the last of their thrash albums before Black Album and Load/Reload. It is a great album for sure, my personal second favorite behind Master.

I think the scratchy guitar tone on kill em all actually adds a lot to the songs. The production is what it needed to be. And you have to remember it was 1983. They didn't exactly have dream theater level production yet
