Metallica - Album Ranking

Музыка

The Masters Of Metal, Metallica, formed in 1981 and have been together for 42 years now. During that time, releasing 12 studio album. With the band having just released their brand new studio album 72 Seasons on 4/14/23, I thought it would be fun to do an album ranking.

...and Justice for all is my favorite album/CD. I listened to the first 3 albums on a half working cassette head unit, with only small floating speakers in the car during my high school years. Once ...and justice for all came out, I had upgraded to new a car and system that actually had full range, 2 -12's, a Rockford Fosgate amp and 8 bit CD head unit. It was a punch in the face from the first track and left you numb till the end. I did go back and rediscovered the awesomeness of the previous cds, but ...and justice for all has stuck with me through the years!

In early 1986, some buddies and I went to see an Ozzy Osbourne concert in Nashville with a little known band (Metallica) as the opening act. When Metallica came out, they absolutely blew us away, we had never experienced anything like this before. Little did I know (at the time) that I was seeing the greatest concert of my life. This was a game changer for me, I instantly evolved from the likes of Kiss, Van Halen, or even Judas Priest. Within a week from seeing that concert, I had a copy of Master of Puppets. Master of Puppets will always be my #1 favorite Metallica album, it just changed everything.

@@joshua_wherley Cliff was still alive and playing when I saw them in 86. Cliff was banging that head non-stop the whole show. I saw Metallica for the second time on the Monsters of Rock tour in 1988, at the Denver show (with Van Halen). I'm 57 now.

Same for me -saw Metallica open for Ozzy and my buds and I dropped our collective jaws to the floor! Never heard anything so fast, technical and punishing, our heavy metal world had just expanded, tenfold! Probably the most significant moment in my metal world of music! Master Of Puppets is peerless, its scope and technicality, it's power and mood.....still blows me away to this very day. Ride The Lightning is pretty much right there with it, insane virtuosity, staggering sonic power, nice acoustic interludes, epic songwriting - these two albums changed the game, along with Kill Em All and AJFA! Metallica will always be a huge landmark for me, musically speaking.

@@davidtrevino5211 Death Magnetic is ruined by the terrible production for me. People say that St Anger is a tough listen, and it is - but it's also the way it's supposed to sound, for good or ill. It's intentionally weird and abrasive. Even AJFA is fine by me. No bass, sure, but it has a unique aesthetic that fits the overall project. Death Magnetic, though, is wrecked by the witless attempt to win the 'loudness wars'. It was a stupid, non-musical decision to release it like that. It's unlistenable with earphones. Especially if a track comes on via shuffle, and you've been listening to some other band (or even another Metallica album). Death Magnetic is so awful-sounding. (And yeah, I do know about the Guitar Hero versions, which are certainly better.)

Lulu is actually not a Lou Reed album, it's a collaboration album between the two, which is an important distinction. It's just as much a Metallica album as it's a Lou Reed album, which is why you find the album filed as a "Collaboration Album" at both artist's wikipedia pages plus Metallicas official website.

Too true about AJFA and the lack of bass. When it came out, it was simply a killer album. Tinny, scooped-mid production makes a lot of thrash albums of that era hard to listen to in retropsect (think Testament, for example), but at the time, we simply loved the songs.

I've got : 1)RTL 2)MOP 3)AJFA 4)KEA 5)72 Seasons 6) Black album I'm 55 though. Last time I saw Metallica was on the AJFA tour. They have not inspired me to see them live again. Saw them as second-opener billing on the US Monsters of Rock with Kingdom Come, Dokken, Scorpions and Van Hagar. Saw them with GNR. Saw them on the AJFA tour. That is the ONLY time in over 4 decades of concert-going that I've ever had temporary(Thank God) hearing loss. They were tight. They were hungry. Top 5 concert in my book. I've been lukewarm to disinterested about Metallidudes releases since AJFA except 72 Seasons. It's surprised me actually. I sort of liked Load and Reload(the good songs like "My Friend of Misery." I like some of DM. I like some of HTSD... But not until 72 Seasons has Metallica caught my ear. I hear a lot of Sabbath. A lot of Thin Lizzy/Maiden(NWOBHM) in the riffs and harmonized leads. I even hear a little "Four Horsemen/Mechanix" nod to Megadave in one of the songs. James sounds amazing. Kirk still Kirks...not anything unexpected(as a side note can SOMEONE for the sake of everyone "lose" Kirk's wah pedals? Please?) I'm obviously more "old school." I like the Black Album but have never loved it like the "Holy Trinity" of old school Metallica. Kirk hasn't honestly played a truly inspiring solo since AJFA in my opinion. He is the weakest link and his wah-infused pentatonic wankery oftentimes prevents Metallica from achieving true greatness again. And then there's Lars.... Kirk has been mailing it in for decades. This new album seems to me to show the rest of the boys have something to say. Especially Papa Het. For the first time in decades I have a new Metallica release on replay and in my playlist. Excellent. Truly surprised.

More of a grower, but will never match the intensity and complexity of the previous works. Listening to these albums so much throughout the years, I tend to grab Inc. more than most. For me Justice will always be my favorite Metallica album. I just wish baby Hetfield would allow a remixed version so we could hear it proper. I think they should have released a limited edition just for the fans. My friends and I always thought that album sounded weird but yeah no one was complaining about the lack of the bass at the time but it always sounded off especially on the portable stereos at the time.

I guess I am a completist because I just re-purchased St anger after getting rid of it along time ago. Not the greatest Metallica but it’s got some pretty good stuff on it so now I have everything I need from them. I will not purchase Lulu.

Death Magnetic is really strong (brick-walled production aside) and as close to a return to classic form as we'll ever get from them. It's the one album from their geezer years really worth getting.

1)Kill Em All. The first official thrash metal album. (Motorbreath). 2)Ride The Lightning. Set the blueprint for what was to come. (Fight Fire With Fire). 3)Master of Puppets. The greatest thrash metal album ever has never been surpassed. (Disposable Heroes). 4)And Justice For All. Despite the lack of bass it's the zenith of their career and like MOP showcases everything they do. (One). 5)Metallica. Refined with big production made them superstars. (Nothing Else Matters). 6)Death Magnetic. The album they should have made after Metallica. A solid thrash metal album. (The Day That Never Comes). 7)Hardwired To Self Destruct. Another solid thrash metal album. (Now That We're Dead). 8)Load. Groove based stoner rock spoilt with too much filler. (Mama Said) 9)Reload. Same with too much filler. (Low Man's Lyric). 10)St Anger. The worst album they made although one of their best sellers despite the lack of snare drum! (Sweet Amber). 11)72 Seasons. Ran out of ideas with nothing more to prove. Doing another victory lap! Metallica by numbers. (72 Seasons). 12) Lulu. Oh dear. A career misstep although some herald it and more power to them! (Can't think of any track I like). S&M is a hit and miss affair where they tried to merge their sound with an orchestra. I wish they had orchestrated some of their studio tracks instead. Garage Days Revisited is a solid collection of covers of their early punk, hard rock, metal and NWOBHM influences.

@@JCStorm76 I put them both at the 10/11 spot as neither add anything to their canon. I bought 72 Seasons and like it but it's not essential Tallica. Everyone knows the first 5 albums are what they're about. Kill Em All will always be my fave because I bought it when it was released as a 17 yr old in 1983. Pure nostalgia!

Lulu isn't a Lou Reed album or a Metallica album, it's a 'Lou Reed and Metallica' album, so a unique artist - at least according to Library of Congress and RIAA
