Revisiting Chinese Democracy | Better Than Appetite For Destruction??

Hey all welcome to my second channel! (Main can be found at ‪@NAETEMUSIC‬ ) On this channel I am gonna do more informal conversations and commentary style videos. First on the agenda we will be discussing Guns N' Rsoes 2008 release "Chinese Democracy." As its now been 15 years, I thought I would take a look back and see is all the hate this album gets really deserved? Or is it under-appreciated masterpiece? Or maybe it's not. Anyway come along for the conversation.

I love this album. He was really striving for greatness. It's this strange oddity that exists in it's own league. There really is no other album that sounds like this. The guitar work, the vocals. I know people are critical of the all the digital trickery but I liked that as well. I wish it would've got the release it deserved. I think the record was basically finished by 2000 but it got stuck in post-production hell because of Axl being a psycho, industry BS, and Roy Thomas Baker making them re-record the entire album. Hopefully the public will give this a second shot down the road. Would be cool to get a triple album re-release with all the outtakes. I think I'm the only who likes this better than the other Guns N Roses albums. It's so epic diverse collection of songs.

Regarding the Dr. Pepper challenge: Dr. Pepper said that they would give everyone except Slash and Buckethead a free Dr. Pepper if they put out that album. Axl’s response was that he was flattered by the promotion, and that he would share his with Buckethead since the guitarist’s work was on the album. Dr. Pepper’s response to the album’s release was to send a Dr. Pepper to everyone who showed proof of purchase of the album.

9:40 I agree. It would have been a pivotal moment for the band if they could have gotten traction and actually release an album in the 90s. Axl's life is not well documented during this recluse period but that delay on Chinese Democracy basically killed that album. Even to the point where my own personal issue with Chinese Democracy is the overproduction(for example I like some of the leaked version of the songs better than the record) . My best guess is you have a guy who was the biggest rockstar on the planet burnt out who hid in his Malibu mansion with unlimited time/money and this created the worst case scenario of recording because Chinese Democracy turned into a side hobby in a way as there was no deadline to do anything. Axl did have great success taking time in songs like November rain which dates back to 1983 I believe but trying to do that approach for an entire record seemed to be the worst thing here especially when you have access to Pro Tools and they just keep editing songs creating issues with a cohesive sound. To me Chinese Democracy sounds weird in a way just due to the nature of how they recorded it over years with massive edits.

It should have always been just an Axl Rose solo album. It should have never been a Guns N' Roses album. Nothing about the entire album had anything to do with Guns N' Roses or the Guns N' Roses sound at all. Would have gone over much better if it had just been an Axl Rose solo album instead of generically throwing the name of Guns N' Roses on it. Use Your Illusion 1 is still the best Guns N' Roses album, after all these years. At least with Use Your Illusion 1, there were no bad songs and every song on there was flawless. Can not say the same for many other the other albums from the band.

One of the reasons the album has an "all over the place" feel to it is because Axl initially intended on the project being a trilogy, which for reasons unknown never was pursued, so when the album was finally released, the prevalent theory is that the album has songs that were intended to be spread out across 3 different styles of albums, so that the album we got is an expression of what the trilogy would have been like.

  • @six_string_sage

@@NickDePanfilis I'm not sure they're really unknown. I'm of the opinion these days that CD is a glimpse into the Axl of today being just a live performer with no apparent interest in releasing more studio work (the 3 tracks GnR has released since the reunion seem to have the earlier vocals, and they give zero promotion to them). He didn't want to release the album when it came out, he wanted to keep working on it. Eventually the studio forced his hand, which was understandable given the cost and it becoming an industry joke (remember even Dr Pepper mocking it?). Despite selling a lot, in relative terms it was a disappointment. Axl himself didn't do much to promote it either. Since then, the focus of his career has changed entirely, as that of a live performer. Was he burned out from it all? Was he upset by being forced to release an album he wasn't happy with? Was the lukewarm reception to something that took so much effort too painful? Who knows, but I think the answer is "quite possibly" to each of those questions. DJ Ashba said a long time ago that there was a trilogy's worth of material already recorded. We know this to be true from the Village Leaks as well. The songs sound "all over the place" because they were. We saw a glimpse of this with My World on UYI2, with Axl embracing the newer musical trends. This was a known issue leading to the breakup of the band. A lot of genres came and went between 1992 and the release of CD, which is why there's a weird mix of electronic and grunge and other sound, plus he had a revolving door of musicians so there are multiple versions of the same song.

Great to hear your thoughts on this album, I really enjoyed it and thought if he had reworked a few weird missteps (removed movie audio clips from Madagascar and replaced will cool guitar like they would do when they played it live, longer solos in Prostitute and maybe reworked or replaced Scraped and Riad N' the Bedoiuns with different songs) it would have been very strong. Curious to hear your take on the 3 new songs they have released and what a new album will sound like.

Sadly it doesn't seem a new album is coming. Slash has said they've not been writing new material, and in 7 years all they've managed to do is add Slash and Duff to existing demos. "Perhaps" even still has the start of Robin's solo under Slash's, it's really weird.

I remember when it came on the radio, just turning it up and listening and hearing Axl’s scream and thinking - this rocks. I also remember the Chinese Democracy jokes, and even the Dr. Pepper ads. Fun fact I was among the 1st humans on earth hear the official album. Back into 2008 I’d put Chinese democracy on preorder. Now because of different countries release days. In America it’s a Thursday generally. In Australia it’s a Tuesday. So it was due in Australia out 2 days before America. However the music store took shipment of the album the Friday prior to release, so i got a call from the shop to pick it up any time a full 6 days prior to its official release in America. At that time I regularly visited a guns n roses forum, and I remembered loving the songs, but wishing I hadn’t listened to the demos as it had cheapened the experience for myself. So I made a conscious effort to not upload anything or post about it’s contents anywhere in the hope the next people would enjoy it to the maximum they could. In general I love the album and because of the production qualities of the album when I buy new headphones it’s the album I listen to, specially there was a time and IRS as they cover the full spectrum of sounds I’ll be hearing.

By the time the album WAS released, a lot of the songs were considered "old" already , and I think that really hurt sales. If my memory serves right, I believe the fully COMPLETED album was leaked months in advance, and the guy who did it was arrested by the FBI.

What I do appreciate about this album to this day is that Axl could have easily just rehashed Appetite over and over and continued to tour with hired guns like a lot of legacy acts do and did but he instead assembled an extraordinarily talented group of musicians and made something ambitious and different than what came before. Even if you do not like the album you cannot deny that. It may not be the game changing Rock album or even the best Guns record but there’s nothing quite like it.

Basically, it's a mixed bag, but even Use Your Illusion 1 was a mixed bag for me, and I've really come to appreciate some of the weirder GNR stuff over the years. ‘Better’ is easily one of the best rock songs to have been released in the last couple of decades, but virtually no one really knows about it. Superb song that’s really quite unique. The record has some brilliant tracks, too. ‘Catcher’ is fantastic - the vocal melodies, the lyrics, harmonies, the outro. Just wish Axl’s vocals were 2dB or so higher in the mix on that one. And some of the vocal performances on the record are quite insane. The vocals on Riad & the Bedouins, the outro to Street of Dreams, There Was A Time etc. It’s a really cool record that suffers from the huge time span in which it was made, chopped & changed. The title track is pretty cool, too!

Im not dissing other guitar players skills they are all great guitar players (virtuoso’s in fact), but what they’ve done with newer songs since slash and Duff rejoined plus some songs i forgot which were written when they were still in band, have been reworked and it sounds more like GnR now. The way they reworked some parts of better is really cool. Just wish they would record the rest of the stuff axl has written up. Slash can make a song in 5 mins evidenced by all the albums hes released recently (but they are always missing axl and duffs touch). Of course izzys touch and stevens drums as well but that will never happen.

The best half of ChiDem, blended with the more grounded organic input of Slash Duff and Matt in the 90s, would have been a stellar follow up to Use Your Illusions, I think. Even on Illusions, you could hear glimpses of ChiDem in the Axl written songs. Axl brought the soaring progressive otherworldly elements, Izzy Stradlin and the other guys brought the gritty grounded street rock. I think this combo was perfected on Illusions 2.

I'm glad this album is getting more recognition it deserves. Madagascar, TWAT, Better, This I love, Prostitute, and If the world. Are ones I listen to frequently because they're my favorite songs off the album. There are some tracks I just don't care much for, but I wouldn't say any song on the album is outright bad.

No no. You cannot compare Chinese to AFD… AFD is miles and miles ahead. AFD has the combination of 5 brilliant minds doing their thing in every song. Take one individual off, and the whole song collapses. That’s how unique AFD was. Axl’s masterclass writing, Slash’s god given skills, Izzy’s quintessential second guitar layerings, Duff’s high pitched bass and Steven’s unique hits all made it a phenomenon back in the day. And u cannot replicate it even today. Chinese was more of a studio feel made album. All songs were heavily mixed to perfection. Perfection till it wasn’t inspiring, at least to me. AFD is and will always be the one of the greatest rock album created by men.

China democracy was very different and very very good. It's definitely a different vibe than the traditional GNR but it's definitely gown on me. People grasped on to Grunge because of the overall feel of things. That made folks dismissed and even have distain for Axle. But Axle is a different kind of artist. He very serious and takes music very serious. That's not necessary a bad thing. GNR is a legend.

I know you keep saying in 96 it should have been released. I’ve always felt that it been released in 05/06 that moment in time the music they’d made was happening or was still happening to some older fans. Plus the anticipation was fever pitch at that time. By 2008 however all of the musical directions they’d taken were kinda in the past already.

I think I found interesting. Is that from rock and wheel 01 up to '06. They were doing some of the Chinese democracy songs live so most hardcore fans waiting for it. Got to taste of what's coming up then a couple of songs were leaked. The final versions were a little bit different with the guitars, but I'd say maybe four to six songs. Let's see. Chinese democracy was played. Live leaked versions of there was a time better IRS or out. They also did those songs live as well as feel the dreams was already being played the other stuff if the world prostitute those songs took a while but they're great songs. It was good. CD shouldn't have taken as long as it did but it was a good CD, remember when it came out as a Best buy in Florida there was a big display in. It was all still filled with CDs. That's why I had exclusive rights to sell it when it came out
