Say what you will, but BM is the only rate in the Navy where you make third class petty officer and jump immediately from the ranks of the workers to the ranks of the supervisors. The job changes a great deal. That's the only rate that does that. The rest of the rates your job changes a little, a little added responsibility. BM you immediately become a supervisor with people working under you.

Loved your video, my husband retired 20 years honorable service with the United States Navy- he went up in rank to Petty Officer 1st Class B.M.1- he also passed the Chief test but Navy was not advancing at that time. Still very proud of him & his devotion to his Country.

My RDC was a BM1 and he was the definition of a sailor, if I end up going undes. because I fail my a school I want to be like him. He’s landed Seahawks on a small boy and almost got decapitated, he’s fallen overboard, he’s steered the ship. He would take out the JO honeys’ trash and stay in the head until they started undressing and then pop out “sorry mam” and never got in trouble. He got three 3 JO’s to go with him to a bar but got stopped by a Lieutenant (cock blocked) and bitched that sir out.

It's called 'coming up through the hawsepipe' and if you cant get past being the "janitor" you weren't a good sailor. BMs are trusted with an insane amount authority when it gets down to the wire. All those fancy jobs on my ship, no one ever got to say they actually helped/saved someone's life, whereas I did and I did more than once. I was also insanely junior for half of my quals. I was trusted over Divos and first classes, occasionally even chiefs. BM starts from the bottom, but unlike anyone else in the Navy we earn our rank and there is a level of authority that no one else will experience.

The one my friend and I have don't answer questions correctly and never gives direct answers even with info we know for a fact is true he won't answer...My friends got sent to MEPS and was never told about the process at MEPS by our recruiter she was even told she would get E1 because the Recruiter opened her official transcript and never told her she was supposed to take a fresh one to MEPS to get your ranking, so what was your experience?

People joke on BM’s, but I made BMC at age 31. I was at a RIVERINE SQUADRON. Most of my fellow E-6’s were in their mid 30’s, ready for retirement. The BM’s were making E-7 through E-9.😂

SR to BMCS then to CWO2 Boatswain here: It's not a pipe it's a call, its know a white rope it's a lanyard. Sweep'n non-skid is an important job that has a purpose, if debris builds up in the roughness of the traction of the coating various pieces of machinery and personal could slip and suffer loss to life and equipment. Painting protects the metal not allowing it to become weak thus impacting ship performance. Seaman in my charge had to know five knots: Bowlin, Bowlin on a bite, Square knot, clove hitch, and sheet bends, double or single, used in many facets of deck life. The most used and the most neglected tool a deckhand had is line. When I was an SN and BM3 I worked under a Master Chief Boatswain Mate that would conduct the entire anchoring process with his call, very impressive. I am afraid many aspects of the art of Marlinspike Seamanship has been lost, os sad.

Getting a lot of smoke blown at me from the Recruiter about options as a BM. Reckons I would have no issues becoming a ships diver and getting courses done as long as I keep putting myself forward. Also reckons that me moving onto another job within the Navy isn't hard to get started just comes down to my abilities and if I can accomplish the requirements, is that true?

NICKY MGTV I had it in contract. Untill I backed out of DEP when I realized enlisted only make $16,750 a year and move up in very small increments throughout the four years. Less than a $10 an hour job 40 hours a week. In the Navy you would be working more hours than 40 a week for sure and make less than the minimum wage job.. But that was disappointing information to find out. The enlisted and even officers in the millitary definitely deserve more a year. C'mon Pentagon. Share the cut. But yeah the adventure of being an AG Weather Forecaster was looking to be fun.. Reading computer weather information and reporting in it 12 hour shifts a day. Lol. Going to Japan and maybe Italy would have been fun though. A Nursing Degree it is. Already Enrolled in college and am receiving the Federal Aid and State Aid. Registered Nursing is definately a decent paying career.

Navy78 There is not even money to be made in the military anyways. The way you "make money" in the military is being good at saving. You could get a 2-3 year Associates degree in Nursing and go right into making 60,000 a year.

Jay Jay I enlisted as a QM a couple days ago and from what I was told and found online QM can drive the ship as well they don't just navigate all day, they can also keep communication's with other ships by means of radio or Flags signaling. they basically do everything on the bridge, especially if your a QM specialist then you can do pretty much any bridge job, I chose QM because standing with the most important people of the ship in the most important room is something that sounds really cool.

Jay Jay That sounds awful they lost your stuff do you still get to be a BM or do you go through the process of picking a job again? I ship out Nov 1st it's a bit to far then I would like. I actually took the asvab twice the first time I got a 41 and my only optionswhere BM or Cook they didn't sound like me so I retook it got a 60 and took the last QM job the Navy had from now till December so I lucked out. I grew up loving star wars and watched star trek throughout High School so the idea of being on the bridge with the captain and assisting him felt like my type of job, my reasoning is nerdy I know but the job is still really cool. All that matters is doing what you will like otherwise your gonna end up like one of those people with a negative opinion of the military because you choose any job.

Fabian M I was OS . You must be a natural at math , geometry , geography, trigonometry, etc..... My advice , learn compass and map . If you can learn that you'll be alright . I recommend watching navigation videos made by David Canterbury of Wilderness Outfitters . Then buy a good compass and local maps and practice. If you can navigate yourself around you'll be light years ahead of the rest . Plus the hiking will help your physical fitness . Good Luck !

Serge EMS Most likely no. You would have to be top shit to be able to do online college while on SARC training. I hope you realize SARC is the longest pipeline in the entire military (almost 3 years long, sometimes 4). You do short training with almost every special forces there are so I doubt youll have any time to do college work or want to do it.
