A guy I know enlisted in the Navy during Viet Nam to avoid being drafted into the Army. He chose corpsman because he though it would be easy and he'd be safe, unarmed and on a ship. Instead, he got assigned to the Marines, in Viet Nam, in combat.

Corpsman and Radioman first two people to be killed in Nam. I think it was essentially just seconds in combat. It's a lot different these days with Marines unless a SARC with Recon or Raiders. Old Doc Out.

I like hearing about Navy Corpsman NOW. I am an old Vietnam Vet with a year with the FMF in a combat zone. At that time most corpsmen got corpsman school, 6 months at a hospital, then field med, then Vietnam, No choice. The marines treated me great and always looked after me. The first time I was out on my first day patrol we started getting sniper fire. I just stood there frozen. A Sgt said, "Doc, get the F... down and don't get the F.... up until I f...ing tell you too. From then I knew when you hear sniper fire, hit the deck.

Sorry for all the postings. I am a Vietnam FMF Corpsman with a line corpsman. From field med school and corpsman school when I was really treating Marines shot, for all this repetition, when I came upon a wounded marine, I knew exactly what to do (not bragging, just all the training in first-aid) to get them on MedEvac and to the hospital. What I didn't know was how to set up a hooch with ponchos and how to heat up C-Rations. My guys helped me with these tasks. Marines treated me so well!!!

I would just like to put a perspective out here, I keep getting these things popping up in my video feed for what ever reason. These are informative and good, but I would like to add an angle that may be beneficial to some of your guys questions. The two big Corpsman channels do not appear to be division guys and some of the questions appear focused on that, so here goes. I hope this may help someone some day. Just up front, I have been a division guy for some time. Out of a ten year career so far, I have spent seven and a half years with 2D Marine Division. The only time I left was to work at the School of Infantry in between my two tours. I have two combat deployments as a Line Corpsman and one non combat deployment to Europe. I am not touting bonifides to congratulate myself, just to maybe let people know where I am coming from. Out of all the greenside orders, Division is the most unique, in my opinion. Not to take away from anybody else, we all do our part, but your division experience is like no other. When you check into an infantry Battalion, there are two places you go, the Battalion Aid Station or a line company. The Aid Station is the focal point of the Navy side with your leadership, the Medical Officer, IDC, and the BAS Corpsman. The BAS folks take care of H&S company folks and do the ancillary services like supply and such. The line company is where the rubber meets the road of division. There are three rifle companies in an infantry battalion, plus a weapons. Each platoon in the company will have two Corpsmen assigned to the platoon. You will have a company senior line as the senior HM of the company. If you go to a platoon, you will do everything they do. For all purposes they own you unless you fuck up and Chief needs to see you or you have an admin issues. You eat, sleep, breath the Infantry. You will PT with them in the morning, clean weapons with them, do classes, teach classes, do their medical readiness, see their sick call, and train with them. You will have a M4 issued to you, you will learn how to be proficient with it and perform fire and maneuver, just like them. In the field, deployed, or in combat, you are no different than them. You literally couldn't pick the Corpsman out of the platoon unless they have longer hair than them. You will do all sorts of ranges, shoot a variety of weapons, perform land navigation, patrols, raids, MOUT, and learn to operate as a part of a ground combat team. You will form a bond with them like no other. I have been either blessed or cursed to see Division in full tilt two wars mode, and in peace time. Right now the combat is non existant. You can still deploy to places to train in different environments, work with partner nations, or stand ready as a forward deployed crisis response asset. There is stuff to do, the ops tempo can be high, but the combat is over for now. But there is always rewarding stuff to do. Before I sound like a Division recruiting poster, there are major drawbacks to be aware of. First off, it is combat oriented. Many of the career things the Navy harps about is not really available to you. It's hard to do college on a hill in Romania or Kuwait. It's hard to be in an association or volunteer when you are juggling field ops, deployments, and a family. This doesnt seem like a big deal to many of you now, but it will one day in your career. You also need to know what your getting into up front. The divisions world revolves around war, it's all that matters to the Marines there. We are in relative peace now, but that could change tommorrow. You will go if it happens, you will fight next to your guys, and it will suck. There is alot of stuff you hear out there about Corpsmen not being in it when it gets heavy, that's bullshit. You tow the line, pull a sector, and kill the enemy just like the lowest privates next to you until someone gets hurt. There is a real cost to this, my first deployment two of the guys I went to Corps School and Field Med with got killed within two weeks, trying to go grab their guys. One guy lost his legs and 2 others where shot. Since my first deployment in 2011, three of the Corpsmen I worked with, one my best friend who was the other HM in my platoon, have taken their own lives. They just couldn't get past the shit that happened over there. There is a heavy Cost doing this job in a time of war, do not go this route if you are not willing to pay it. The Navy will blow smoke up your ass in peace time and throw you into the meat grinder in a war. A friend of mine is about to be forced out at 17 years as a 2d class. He has served at all three divisions, two back to back sea duties, five combat pumps over all with a platoon. He went through it all since 05 and he is getting dumped because he couldn't get past the mindset to advance, its unforgiving. I know I am rambling, I know most of you folks watching this and reading comments are 18 and full of piss and vinegar ready to go get yours. I was you once I get it. I had a old, fat, broken, burn out division 2nd class trying to spit wisdom to me once as well, I didn't listen either. I do hope I may have helped somebody just starting out in the community. My days in this gun club are winding to a close, it's time for my old ass to hang up the spurs and complain about my back and knees. But know this friends, I would never trade what I have done and the people I met for any rank, paycheck, person, or job in this world. If it's what you want, go for it. One of you folks might carry my boys legacy into the next big one one day.

I went straight from Corps School straight to FMF School back in 2000-2001. Finished FMF training and into infantry, 9/11 hit and I never saw "shore" duty. It was definitely an experience that taught me to respect the Marines as well as value their training.

Your right you don’t know what you will do in combat until it happens. I was an Army combat medic in VN. My first tour was in a MASH unit where I learned my craft. Second and third tours were with infantry and armored cav units. Until you get into a firefight you always wonder what you will you do? When that happens all your training and upbringing kicks in. You learn what matters immediately. Taking a life is life is a lif e changing moment. If was to save your soldiers or Marines it was justified. We tried to stay behind our troops to give support, but sometimes we were in the midst of it and had shoot every damn enemy it sight. But if we came upon enemy wounded we treated as anyone else. It’s a hard life, but I spent 26 1/2 years doing and don’t regret it at all.

I used to run the pistol range quals for the SNCOs and officers in my unit over at Camp Johnson. I always let the Corpsman who gets assigned to the detail qual if he/she wanted. It was a great opportunity to earn the pistol badge, which from what I understand, don't come by to often for Corpsman (or junior Marines for that matter).

HMCS (ret) corpsman 25 years. I think what most people are asking about is what it is like to be on green side at division or company level. I served in recon commands for most of my career. If you were an e5 or lower you were assigned a company then platoon. You trained with them, pt'd with them etc. you had to prove your worth. Everyone in the BAS pt'd with the Marines. Just because you worked in sick call or any admin job did not mean you didn't pt. Was 8404 school worth it. Yes it gives you information to grow on. Prove yourself and you get to go to school. I went to jump school and scuba school. will you see combat? No one knows the answer to that in todays world. When I was with 3rd Recon I carried an m16 not a 45. Most recon corpsman did. Have I ever shot anyone? Yes. Until someone is injured we were considered riflemen. I would not trade my years with the Marines for anything. The Hospital Corp is the most decorated group in the Navy. They have been awarded everything from the Medal of Honor, Navy Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Hearts. I can tell you no one goes looking for medals but when someone is injured during combat as a corpsman you never hesitate. That is why the Marines love their "Docs"

As for myself, I enlisted in the Navy in Feb. 1964 with the specific intention of FMF duty and Vietnam as well. That worked out as planned, and in April, 1965 I was headed up the Perfume River on landing craft to Hue and then by truck to an area west of the local airport where the marines set up field tents, mess halls, showers, and a perimeter. I have never heard the term "Greebnside" before.

Told them Hell No. I domt jump out of a perfectly good plane. Served both tours with FSSG but loved it when I TAD'ed with different units needing corpsman support. Got to go to Mt. Want to be a classic "Greenside" Corpsman? Infantry? BE IN SHAPE and know your stuff medically. There, done. But really, you do need to be in shape. The Marines won't and don't respect anyone...Marine or Navy, male or female who drops out of humps (long walks with heavy packs). They don't respect anyone who can't keep up when it comes to PT. If you are lacking in that area, do something about it. The last thing a Marine unit commander wants to worry about is if the "sailor" can keep up and do what his Marines do, and go where they go. If you're a Corpsman and you can't, you're no good to that unit. If you look around pretty much any Marine Corps base, you'll be able to find a gym or pull-up bars and there are LOTS of places you can run. Some Corpsmen use going to the field as an excuse for not promoting. That is BS. You can find questions you'll see on the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st Class exams. You take those with you to the field and when you're in the role of safety Corpsman (which is what you'll do a LOT) study. Laminate them in fact. I did ten years on active duty, the last 7 with the Corps. It's the best duty I had in the Navy, it was also the toughest and most challenging.

Women and Men do actually have some different positions within the Marines. Women are not generally attached to the grunts in the field, nor (SARC) recon or raiders of course. Women will most likely be with the BAS if greenside. Now there are more cush jobs than grunts, like Wing, BAS, Headquarters or Warehouse (generally with higher rank or as getting ready for rotation out). Also if you're a male greenside (not BAS, Headquarters, Airwing, Warehouse) with the grunts you absolutely will be doing the exact same PT as them every morning and day (generally the better PT, the more respect from your guys). You should also be doing Marine PFTs (granted you only need Navy PFT for rank and paperwork) as well as things like Marine MCREST (30mile hikes with gear) and O-course. This man is an HM1/IDC (well done, get that anchor next) which means less field work and more actual med work. Plus you are generally going to be HM2 or above if IDC, so again higher rank comes less grunt time, more actual med work. Old Grunt Doc Out.

PATRICK McShane yes, sometimes they will select you out of fmtb. Or you can try to get a contract in corps school.

Are you more likely to go straight to green side if you already have medical training? I'm a paramedic looking at becoming a corpsman. I want to go green side. But as a female, I also don't know if it's less likely to be sent green side. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

The Marines don’t have medic positions but you can enlist in the Navy as a corpsman and choose to go the green side. You still get to wear the Marine uniform but it says US Navy instead!

Sometimes it's about being in the right place at the right time. I knew Corpsmen who got sent to the Marines who HATED it. I also know Corpsmen who wanted to go "Greenside" and got sent to hospitals and clinics. It's about (familiarize yourself with this phrase) "the needs of the Navy".

My 19 year old son joined the Navy as a Navy Corpsman with such big dreams. He did not go with the Marines because of me, I begged him not to join the Marines. He tried to do a different job for the Navy but a test showed that he was colorblind so could not go for why he originally wanted, so they told him Corpsman was a good option for what his long term college plan was. In A school he got orders to Guam and he was exited, but then he got Pretty sick, so they told him he could not leave his room for 5 days and he missed a lab, because of that he got held back and his orders where change. When I went to his graduation, I found out not only has he’s orders been change to go with the Marines but he is being sent to the Marine Infantry. My heart is in shit right know, why and how they made so many promises. I’m proud of my son, not only did he joined to protect his land but also so he also has Dreams of becoming a dentist, they told him this was the way as a Navy corpsman and now they are sending him to the Marine infantry and with everything going on I am not okay with this at all. I am proud and terrified and don’t know what I can do or if I can do anything at all. I remember specifically asking them if anything like this could ever happen when he was signing up and they told me and reassured me that never, he was I. The safest branch. My son is really quiet and what appears to be shy to others, but he is extremely self disciplined always has been like that, but he doesn’t really talk at all to other people and sometimes is taken the wrong way.to clarify he is not in anyway complaining, he says he is ready to go and complete the Marines Bootcamp and do what is expected of him, he doesn’t even like to tell me about it to much, because of my rambling but what the Hell. This is my SON my baby. Why would they tell me he would NEVER BE with n the front lines, and turn around and give him orders to go to Marine Infantry. Is not the Marine part because I knew that he wanted and knew that is the Infantry part only 2 of the Graduates got sent to the infantry division.
