    Hi Nicky, I was a Fleet Marine Corpsman during the Vietnam War. I was attached to 1st Battalion 5th Regiment in 1966and 67. I was with A Company for the first 6 months then went to our Battalion Aid Station for the other 6 months. Do I have stories to tell 😁 . For many years after I completely shut this experience out and closed my mind about the experience. About 5 years ago I got this desire to learn where I was and what we did. All I remembered was that I was in 1/5. So a little research and tons of information flooded my mind and now I can't stop talking about it to anyone who will listen. I love the Marines though.

    I saw combat as an HM3 in Viet Nam w/the Marines in ‘66. I can’t think of anything to recommend it, I just did what I was trained to do and finished out my time aboard a destroyer tender, the USS Bryce Canyon AD36. I have no regrets but have to say my time aboard ship was the most enjoyable.

    Being a crewman on a smallboy like a DDG or a CG can give you a lot of options to hold a technical rating and be trained in small arms combat . You can be a member of the security alert team , landing party , boarding party , or prize crew . I was an Operations Specialist and a member of all the teams listed above . I was an MP for two years in Yokosuka Japan with the NEC 9545 without switching to Master At Arms , keeping my OS rating . Most of the personnel on smallboys who serve on these teams are people in the Weapons and Operations departments such as Gunner's Mates , Fire Controlmen, Torpedomen , Operations Specialists , Sonar Technicians, Electronic Warfare Technicians, etc. If someone wants to join the navy and is a "gun nut" , like me and many others , become a Gunner's Mate if they want to serve on surface ships , or a Torpedoman if they want to go on submarines . Either way can be a good starting point for a future gunsmith in the civilian world . GMs and TMs can get assigned to work in the armories of SEAL teams , MP departments , SEABEE companies , and ships armories , and work with cool weapons . I'm sorry if im getting a bit off point , but some people want to get into combat for the action , while others just might want to have fun shooting guns . Thanks Nick !

    Victor Waddell So would a GM ever end up in combat

  • @victorwaddell6530

    @victorwaddell6530

    6 жыл бұрын

    Shard420 If a ship were at sea and got into combat the GMs would be manning the main guns and maybe small arms . Main guns , like the 5 inch guns on destroyers and cruisers , would be used against larger vessels, and smaller vessels beyond the range of small arms like 50 caliber machine guns and rifles . In port GMs and other qualified personnel are armed to protect the ship , pier , and base against attacks . They carry shoulder weapons and handguns . Attacks can come from land at the entrance gates of the base , or from sea by small vessels or swimmers . Look at the USS Cole , attacked by suicide bomb boat while refuelling import. Then there are the SEABEES , who work on land and must provide their own security , every one of them is trained in small arms . I'm thinking that SEABEES have GMs in their batallions to run the armories and be instructors . When I was an MP our armorer was a TM . So , Yes , GMs and other sailors can get into small arms combat .

    Dude there is no way that can be true. Seabees may need to go outside the wire here and there, but do not carry out direct combat against the enemy unless engaged first. Where every combat unit of the Marines has at least 1 corpsman per platoon every time they leave the wire.

    @tyler crips, define patrol. What Marine unit(s) were the CB’s helping on said “patrol”? Multiple units can engage in small arms fire or encounter IED’s while outside the wire, but the video is mainly speaking to direct combat. Units that perform dismounted aka foot patrols or kicking in doors or taking part in an actual offensive operation against the enemy. Yes the CBs are a very good support unit when it comes to construction, but in today’s modern fights, it’s not as common like back in WW2 to see CBs engaged in actual combat overseas. Y’all still kick ass in the construction world though and that’s something to be proud of! I tip my hat to y’all.

The squadron was stationed with the Army 1st infantry and he ended up receiving an Army achievement medal, and they all received an army meritorious unit citation. For guys looking for an interesting job in the navy I would definitely consider joining and trying to get Riverine orders. It's a lot more difficult now, because last I heard they navy really downsized the already small riverine program. Also the riverine badge looks pretty bad ass in combination with the ESWS.

    Got a question, what are the requirements for being awarded a combat action ribbon? Being fired at, small arms, fired at/mortar/artillery/rocket. That said, we had to participate as in firing back as in a fire fight. Question is, do you have to fire back and be active in the fight. I heard it both ways and wondered what the criteria is now? I'll check back, if ya answer questions.

    I was about to make a comment about MA and GM and riverines but then I saw all the comments lol. In the future, you might want to make a disclaimer in the beginning like "yes you could potentially see combat in any Navy job including CS but these are the jobs where it is actually likely that you will see combat given the nature of modern conflicts that the United States is involved in." I think that would have avoided a lot of the confusion. I got to say I'm surprised you mention diver, yes those guys might work with SEAL's on their missions but that is rare.

    @@NICKYMGTV you forget man there are little known operations going on in other parts of the world that involve some other rates that don't even make the news. Back during the 90s some operations took place in the Caribbean that few people know about. They involved Seals and regular Navy rates not just corpsman. Those might come to light in 20 or 30 years time.

    I'm a retired Seabee and applied for dive school but was denied because I had recently been in some trouble. Seabee divers are assigned to Underwater Construction Teams (UCT). They get mad respect, like corpsman or EOD. Seabees in general get respect, but Seabee Divers are next level. The first 25 frogmen, were from the Seabees, and the frogmen were essentially the first Navy Seals.
