Yup. Got rejected for a shoulder dislocation that happened 3 years prior. I could appeal but the whole procedure would take 2 months. The fact that I had been doing MMA for 2 years AFTER my dislocation apparently wasn’t convincing enough that my shoulder was fine.

Dude a 43 is extremely low. They're probably sitting there going "so, they're not well-educated AND they want us to cover medical expenses?" Guy doesn't understand what dislocations can do to your health. Once it's popped out the first time, it's always going to be easier every time after. Especially when you're aging with every year. Not a safe bet! And you're doing mma. You basically told them you've been injured and you're already in the process of injuring your self more by learning combativs from some dude who took classes 30+ years ago. The margin of error on your part is huge.@@alexd4566

So similar in Belgium. The military is bleeding dry. I applied for a legal job (officer position) and got medically rejected for a shoulder dislocation that happened 3 years prior. They told me my shoulder would cause issues in bootcamp, even though I was in perfect condition and had been doing MMA for 2 years. Now years later, I keep receiving emails from recruiters asking me to reapply. No thanks. Good luck filling in those 2500 vacant positions every year.

Fast forward, they all have Master Degrees( Nurse, computer science, engineering). 😂 When we invaded Iraq and Afghanistan, waivers were given out like candies. During GWOT, the standards and regulation weren't enforced. Folks were covering up dirt 🤨 and problems swept under the rug. The main reason American public schools are shitty is because they stopped flunking the idiots out over half a century ago. I’ve both taught and served in the navy. Many jobs even on submarines could be performed by chimpanzees in my opinion. Sailors can be so dumb that they think anyone who reads for pleasure is obviously queer. So what good does their shit diploma from some rural public school really mean? Probably even less than a GED where you at least have to pass a standardized test while being observed to prevent cheating.

I'd say the military, including the State Department, has a massive toxic leadership problem. Even the navy has ordered people to suffer so much that they committed suicide. One of those incidents was an admiral that forced sailors to be housed on a ship in dry dock as it was being repaired 24 hours a day. As a result seven sailors committed suicide while serving on the USS George Washington. It required a massive navy investigation to realize that having those sailors there was a bad idea. Four other sailors at a different repair facility died from suicide. As many sailors die from suicide each year that are needed to man a frigate. Also the rate of desertions in the navy has doubled. This is what the young people see.

Over the next 10 years of active duty I obtained a GED, Adult High School Diploma and a 2 year Associates Degree from a Community College. I advanced through the ranks to E-6 (First Class PO) and was promoted to a Chief Petty Officer in the USNR. I continued upper level college course work and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree. In addition, I completed Graduate level studies. So here's the point, the Navy took a chance on this High School drop out and it worked out exceedingly well for me and the Navy. So kudos to VADM Cheeseman for expanding the pool of applicants to include those that do not have a High School Diploma or GED.

It is good to see someone mention GENISIS. I spoke to the local Navy Recruiter, as a 31-year retired Army Veteran, to see how being so close to an Air Force and Army base affects their ability to recruit Sailors. He told me that his recruiting area recruiters put 300 prospects onto the floor at MEPS, and only 20 made it through the GENISIS screening. That is a huge issue for recruiting.

The vaccination requirements are really not a factor, and no one really believes that, including those who say they do. The overwhelming majority of Sailors complied (as they should). Retention is a main culprit and that spreads to actual recruiting. I work at a C school command we often have Sailors cycling through here going through temporary periods sleeping in their vehicles. In many other cases they are giving false information about PCSing entitlements and that leads to anger. In the fleet, there are simply issues with draconian policies that often punish the victim. An example. One of our instructors went to CO's mast and was busted down a pay grade. Why? He was riding is bike in a designated bike lane and a car swerved over and hit him. Just like that, his chain of command decided he was participating in an unnecessary risky activity.

I entered the Navy in 1975 to be a Corpsman. I had gone to Job Corps to learn a trade just months before. I was only there for a few months and during that time I took the GED at a local college and passed. We had daily classes in preparation for that test and after 2 months I took it and did pretty well considering nothing I was being taught to prepare for it helped even a little bit. The material was totally different. I had only completed 9th grade and quit school in the 10th grade. I STILL had to take some entrance exams as I remember and did well on most of them for the Navy. Again, my schooling barely had any bearing on those tests. Then, I went to school in San Diego for Hospital Corpschool for only about 10 weeks. I completed my 4 years as a Corpsman mostly on Parris Island and went to college after that. My point is my previous schooling had very, very little to do with what I was actually trained for although math, English, and the ability to read and write helped.

Granted there are likely less combat MOS’s in the navy, but when feces strikes the oscillator they never failed to show up. An instance that comes to mind is when on a squad patrol we inadvertently jumped a reinforced platoon and were forced to lay down a base of fire and pivot ( run for our fuckin lives). A navy sea knight pilot heard our pleas for help and took it upon himself to divert from his supply mission and land in an extremely unfriendly environment to extract us, resulting in the sides of his helo being turned into cheese graters. He didn’t have to do that, but we called and he just showed up. Sup previous Navy recruiter here. Honestly if they really wanted to fix the problem they would fix MEPS. Cut down on required paperwork for things so individuals who want to join only need ESSENTIAL paperwork. Take a misdemeanor some kid got when he was 14. The courts usually expunge it. Just have the courts decision be the paperwork they need and NOT the arresting record, letters of recommendation from guidance counselors, and written statements. Same with medical injuries. If the doctor signs off on saying a broken bone is now 100% good then leave it at that. Why do the applicants have to get pre-op, post-op, follow-up, etc. to get through. It was one of the biggest headaches for the applicant and myself due to always needing MORE paperwork after we turn some in. Often the applicant just gave up. Until that happens we’re going to keep getting low numbers

The reasons for the recruiting problems is entirely based in Congress, the White House, and the with the Officers. These kids today sit around and listen to their friends and relatives who have joined the service complain about the housing problems, the low pay, the soddy equipment, poor leadership, lack of support from senior leadership, lousy retirement program, constant deployments, and many other problems. They listen to all of this and then ask themselves "Why on earth would I want to enlist and have to put up with that?" This isn't the 1940' or even the 1980's when American youth still has a sense of patriotism and civic duty. Most of today's youth are more concerned about themselves and what they will get out of everything. THAT is what root cause of the recruiting problem.

If they see high cholesterol and A1C above 5.6 from their personal records, people have to improve that, even though it will likely improve in basic or boot camp. They are STRICT!

Genesis is what probably gets most applicants. I tried to enlist in 2001 after high school and was disqualified due to my medical history. I was honest and upfront but couldn't join. I can only imagine today it's higher, due to Genesis and people trying to hide their medical issues.

I was a career recruiter for 18 years , we have done this before. The problem is not if they are smart enough (they have to have a 50) to be in the navy, the problem is that they have a high percentage of not finishing a 4 to 6 year enlistment. That becomes expensive and counterproductive when you have to replace them on a short notice.

To my fellow Veteran who derided allowing HS dropouts to enlist and was reluctant to say "Back in my Navy" ,"Allow me to retort"." Back in my Army" They not only allowed dropouts and GED holder to enlist ( dropouts were mostly dumped into "Combat arms", people with GEDs were treated as HS Grads) 3 years prior to my enlistment (1977) the military was drafting people out of jails , and chasing down dropouts. (HS and college). The reason why a lot of people dropped out back then was because a lot of urban HS's were fu*kin dangerous( and still are) , a war zone was safer because at least you could shoot back. Now rural, and suburban schools are the most likely sites of mass shootings . I tested so high on my entrance exam , that I got my requested overseas posting (S. Korea) but was made to go intelligence (INSCOM) which in hindsight was a great posting. My assigned secondary MOS was " Crypto ,intercept translator"(I still don't know what that is). Education is important. I finished my AA on active duty. My BA in a year after ETS. In 1984 the FBI (which required college) top pay was $27,000 dollars ,My first civilian LEO job ( requiring a HS or GED topped out at 37k). 3 years later going through my second civilian academy( requiring college) ,the FBI still required college , and still topped out at $27k) My new job topped out at $50K. It stayed that way for the feds until Clinton got elected '92 (I voted for Perot ,he was right about that if NAFTA got passed " you will hear giant suckin' sound of American jobs goin' to Mexico".)I stayed on that job for 23 years ,retired at 51, My salary was about what a FBI Special Agent In Charge(SAIC) makes now) . My combined pensions are 6 figures plus the 30k most working people in "Red" States earn. But I don't think a HS diploma is worth getting beat up or shot .GED= "Good Enough Diploma" .In most States a GED score of 275 out of 300 means your HS has to list you as a "graduate". I got 283. My college GPA was 3.75.

I left with a degree, a trade, experience, leadership skills, money, and all the benefits a veteran gets. The only thing I'd say I messed up on is letting my security clearance expire.... Idk bout focusing recruiting on veterans tho...imo, you gotta be down bad to go back to the military lol

Absolutely! So many veterans want back in, but the military makes it really hard (frequently impossible) to come back. Plus many of the vets are really motivated.

I approve of this. There’s lots of reasons people wouldn’t have a diploma/GED, and most of those reasons aren’t the persons fault. If you have to take a test, it proves you have the knowledge/skills, so who cares what your life circumstances were

Maybe if medical background check wasn’t the most important thing 70% wouldn’t fail Meps. People use to be able to join reserves with heart defects (both grandparents in Vietnam had heart issues) Now if you had adhd meds at 17 good luck bud on your future in the civilian job market that pays 3x as much. with better retirement long term. I wonder what the problem is for recruiting. Good luck to all recruiters they have a hard job wish you guys the best not your fault the system is kinda screwed.

I heard their biggest obstacle is the medical waiver system. So why not reform it? Seems like a solution that makes the most sense 🤷‍♂️

There is a medical waiver for just about anything in the DOD. They had really strict requirements for asthma or ADHD, but a lot of that went away when they needed bodies back in 2007-2010.

@@Knights_Oath They should remove the medical practitioner guy from the equation entirely...I think a candidate should be allowed to get a waiver simply by going to their family doctor and having their doctor fill out a form stating that the candidate is good for military service. The idea that a military doctor can over rule a family doctor or psychiatrist that someone has seen for years is ridiculous. The process to obtain a waiver is just a completely ridiculous and un necessary hurdle

I’m currently struggling to get in because of an adhd diagnosis back in 2012, I only had 1 prescription filled and I got another one back in 2017. Plus two inhalers for bronchitis. They’re being a pain abt it….

@@jamiezoe7663 I decided not to join because of the hassle. wasn't going to waste my time. Plus, i don't like the way they treat their people. Never met a veteran who was happy they served...instead the ones I met were all miserable and regretted joining

The enlisted are already here because we don't have a better option. If someone without a HS diploma or GED can meet the minimum score, THEN LET THEM TRY AND BETTER THEIR LIFE. I personally have a GED and currently have 21 years time in the Army. The Army wouldn't talk to me until I had a GED and I had to borrow money to pay to the test. Sometimes people just need a little help.
