I entered the USMC in Nov 1983. I got the distinct impression of kickbacks as the Corps went through butterfly collars, enlisted wearing chevrons centered on covers, Navy enlisted not confusing salutes with PO and Chiefs with officer brass. Finally, USMC went to name tapes as I left the Corps. As of late, the bottom 2 blouse pockets were relocated to the shoulders. I saw them put to use for the first time since earning my Marine title. Some "brass" wants a "claim to fame" footprint in the history of their service as "I did that".

Simple, extremely usable, and everyone liked them. Its heritage went back to ww2. I was even issued a navy blue Donald Duck flat hat that we weren’t allowed to wear but had to have it in our sea bag. I was so glad when I didn't have to cut any off! I wore dungarees to and from work (straight to and from, with no stops). I proudly wore the crackerjack uniform for inspections once a year, for command inspections and standing inport OOD watches, until (on shore duty) the "new" suit and tie (very poorly cut) uniform was made mandatory. 🤭 I wouldn't even suggest to anyone to enlist, at this point of time. I say that, while acknowledging that the Navy taught me all the basics of how I made my living, for over 40 years. Sad state of affairs!

Uniform changes are like any time someone is in charge, they want to make 'their mark' and make everyone change something so they can say... they made everyone changed something on their annual eval. Civilian companies do the same thing but it rarely makes this kind of effect on the rank and file. The 80s were a great time, almost everyone wore the same uniforms (woodland BDUs, which worked great) for a very long time with little changes

Believe it or not, the military doesn't change, for the sake of change. They usually need a damn good reason to do anything different. As long as it continues to work, don't fix it if it ain't broke. But fortunately, they're more progressive than they've ever been. I think they realize that they're dealing with individuals, who are trying to exist in a "team" environment. Not easy to find a happy medium in today's world. It's different now. Keeping service members happy is perhaps becoming a "thing", I would guess..

@@qua7771 Can you expound on your comment? What bureaucracy about what running smoothly? What simple shit was made chaotic for no good reason? I'd just like to understand. When I served, I expected doses of bureaucracy, and never questioned it, because in the military.... the tail NEVER wags the dog, and it doesn't matter what I felt was important. I was consigned to the fact that my superiors made decisions, and I followed orders. It didn't matter if I was interrupted, because everyone gets interrupted, and it happens all the time. When ever I was interrupted, I felt as though whatever I was doing, wasn't as important as what I would be doing. It didn't matter to me, cuz I was always doing something worthwhile, which I couldn't be punished for. So, it never bothered me. I understand that certain things needed to get done by a certain time. And it's frustrating trying to meet deadlines, with constant interruptions. All I'm saying is that every service member signs up for that, whether they know it or not. If that's your thing, have at it. Enjoy! It made my head hurt, especially when we were constantly reminded of all the downed aircraft. I made several suggestions to try to streamline things, like putting light duty personnel in charge of paperwork, etc.. The thing is there were senior enlisted personnel that weren't that good at their job. They would justify their existence by creating a position for themself, and that usually had a consequence of making life more difficult for everyone. They were creating work that didn't exist, when we already had shit that needed to be done. Then there were junior officers who were completely clueless about aircraft maintenance, doing essentially the same thing. Day shift was 10x worse than the night shift. Nothing got done on day shift because of all the brass pacing around acting busy. Everyone in perfectly pressed uniforms. The night shifts were completely different. there were people with dirty hands, and a overall since of accomplishment. Regardless, after a few years of it, I couldn't wait to get away from it. I got out in the '90's and never went back to a large organization for that reason. I finished college, and started a business, with efficiency in mind. As an engineer in the navy i have to say i love my bulwarks/FRVs. Im in them almost every day whether it's in port or underway and I've never had an issue with them. Personnel i hate wearing every other uniform. There either uncomfortable or stiff to me, but not my coveralls. I don't like the idea of a two-piece wombo combo and the idea that it will dangle and get stuck in something that could endanger me. Now I know that this doesn't apply to almost all other departments but i feel like this is a legitimate reason that they probably aren't thinking about or maybe are and they'll just tell us to tuck them in. If that happens then they should just let engineers wear our normal coveralls.

Agreed, and I was forced to wear the itchy, scratchy fireproof coveralls of the early 1990's. We lived in those and cotton coveralls for the whole of my shipboard years on two ships. That, with collar insignia, blackened boots, black belt, and a ballcap worked for those of us working in No. 2 MMR (and No. 1). Don't no why the whole Navy didn't go that way, because I understand it worked for the Coast Guard for decades.

Though they existed way before I did, I honestly don't get why we just don't go back to dungarees. I mean, that uniform started the whole "can't be worn running errands" bullshit, and that made sense. It's jeans and a button up. But coveralls are an actual uniform. These new 2pocs simply seem like a coastguard cross over. Either way, glad I've been out since 2018, cos Big Navy just keeps on fucking up

Zumwalt didn't do that. That was the women Admirals at the onset of the pettycoat Navy. Women supposedly didn't look good in dungarees and the buttons on the shirt were backwards. Zumwalt was very good for the Navy at the time. Facial hair was finally allowed after bubble heads wore them on patrol and Vietnam it was allowed. Had a very nice goatee and mustache when I was there. Good for the soul. Also the culture there meant you were a wise old man. Asians can mostly grow sparse facial hair after about 40. We fit in like in Afghanistan. That was a very wise move. Pun not intended.

I remember my old Seafarer dungaree's and chambray shirt, we had iron-on rank insignia...they only had them with three stripes and you had to cut one or two off depending if you were E-5 or E-4. The sign of a West Pac Sailor was the Uniform and Tailor Shop in Subic Bay Philippines offered to embroider your name directly into your chambray shirt or dungaree's, and even offered to embroider your crow directly into your chambray shirt. At the end of a deployment, during that last stop in Subic, I'd usually get 2 or 3 sets of "inspection" dungaree's to last me until the next deployment. Once I even had them embroider my rating device in a couple of sets. Which got me a 'thumbs up' during a command inspection. The Seafarer dungaree's and chambray shirts weren't expensive either. $60 bucks got me 3 sets of inspection ready uniforms, and that's paying extra for the embroidery, so they didn't put a hurting on my wallet. They lasted, but then again, as an Airedale, my typical underway uniform was either a set of green flight deck trousers (later replaced by wash khaki) and a flight deck jersey, so I wasn't wearing 'em out that much either.

The reason the reserve will get them directly shipped is two-fold. One, there are centers that are not reasonable located near an installation where uniform items are readily available. Two, active duty gets a clothing allowance (I know it rarely covers what’s needed) where the reserve does not.

huh, I guess it's changed. I was in back in the late 80's and early 90's and so I wore dungarees. Even though you couldn't wear them to and from the ship, I think they were the ideal working uniform for E-6 and below. They were durable and comfortable. As I recall they were also fairly inexpensive. Particularly if you are a junior sailor, you are going to get dirty sometimes. It makes sense to have a uniform that isn't a big deal to replace if it gets trashed. The next best option to me would be the coveralls, but I don't think I would care for the one piece design. They would be durable though.

The Navy hade tinkered with uniforms starting in WWII but made no real major changes until the early 1970's when Zumwalt threw the seabag for enlisted Sailors into the air and came up with the first dumb changes with the coat and tie for E-6 and below, Johnny Cash Blues and Salt and Peppers. (I hated all of these changes.) This not only created an undue financial burden on our sailors, but the Navy also had to come up with lockers aboard ship for this crap. By the beginning of the 80's, we started back to Cracker Jacks. This was only the beginning. Nothing has lasted except constant change. Other viewers are correct in that someone is getting rich off of all of this and it isn't our Sailors. CNO and MCPON have to grow a set and put an end to this senseless crap. Chose a seabag that works for our Sailors and stick with it!

Everything fit, except pea coat and other heavy outer wear, in your sea bag. And what’s with all the hats. There’s nothing that says Navy more than the white hat. We were issued four and wore them with EVERY uniform, whether dungarees, dress blues or whites, or undress uniforms. I like the new working uniforms. No more pajamas to work in. Also, it decreases folks laying their uniforms on the ground when using the head (gross) and hopefully they last longer than the coveralls. A lot of folks hate change so people will complain no matter what. I am glad Sailors don't have to foot the bill to own a couple sets...they just have to show up to quarters, do their jobs and go home...all in one uniform lol.

Honestly it’s nice to not have to change uniform to go to watch then back to coveralls to train firefighting then maybe back again if you have another watch, and you can just come to work in one uniform then go home in that uniform that sounds great and like it’ll save packing space and rack space too, absolutely a W

You mean... that kind of craziness would have made you regret having served any longer, had you stuck around? Last I heard, uniform changes aren't craziness. They're just another uniform. So what? Craziness would be being out at sea, and you're under attack, from an enemy. But changing to another uniform, and you'd come undone?

Being a practical person I am for BDU's / Cammie's for all Military Personnel. Make the U.S. Navy's, BDU's , Navy Gray and Blue. With Insignia etc, attachable by hook and loop. On both the Sleeves and the Collars. Marines Should be green and Blue when on board ship and when in the field an appropriate Color Scheme. Army should be a Green and Tan Pattern. All Dress Uniforms should be Blue with accents depending on the Branch of Service. Blue and Gold for Navy, Blue and Red for Marines, Sky Blue and Silver for the Air Force, and Dark Blue and Cobalt blue for the Space Force. If you want to differentiate between E-1 to E-3, E-4 to E-6 , E-7 to E-9, and Warrant Officer's and Officers etc, etc then just use a different color belt. And another thing, if I was POTUS right now, I would scrutinize those changes with a fine toothed comb. And then I would hand it back to the Admiralty and say " Gentlemen, I said ' Simplify, not Stupify ', try again".

The new 2POCs I'm looking forward to trying them on. I really hope they're not as hot as the NWUs bc I hate how they trap heat. The rank tab thing is dumb to me. Changing the color doesn't do shit if people are still going to have to look at your chest for rank. As a woman I never felt it was creepy or caused problems personally but for those that wanted the change, here it is and it solves nothing.

I was in from 2012-2014. We were issued the NWU Blue Digi camo. While I was in I noticed some had the Green digi variation. I was told that it was for those on shore duty or in Aviation. I heard from a lot of veteran sailors they really hated the “blueberries” vs the “guacs” but in comparison to what they are trying to push now? Jesus. Glad I’m not in anymore with all the crazy stuff I’ve heard about the navy in the recent years.

I wonder if the 2POC will eventually replace the type lll's, if so how would that work for sailors on shore duty or who work security or boots on ground deployments? This uniform works for ship board usage, but doesn't look proper off ship.

The problem isn't the new uniforms, the Navy needs to have an inport uniform and an at sea uniform. The new Khakis and then the new solid navy blue uniform when it comes online (you know its only a matter of time) as the inport uniforms. Then have the Coveralls as the at sea uniform for the majority.

Served 1975 - 1995. Issued utilities (royal blue shirt, navy blue twill pants) and coat & tie dress blues in boot camp, wore tropical white longs during black dirt season, and then salt & peppers, and gunfighters during white dirt season. Finally, we got the jumpers back, and I loved them. I wore my flight suit when I was flying (Aircrew), and dungarees “when the nature of the work would unduly soil or ruin the Uniform of the Day”, per Uniform Regs. Then, I made Chief and wore khakis every day (except when flying/ready crew). Back in coat & tie dress blues (nicer ones, though), and got to purchase summer whites, choker whites, mess dress blues. I didn’t buy aviation greens, because as nice as they were, they were not a liberty uniform. (?) Brown shoes, white shoes, black shoes. Coveralls covered the “dress dungarees”, then the coveralls got embroidery and became a uniform in itself, and that’s when it all went off the rails. After I retired, in came Blueberries, E1-E6 in khakis with black piss cutters, wash khakis, dress khakis, BDUs of almost every flavor, and now 2POCs. When I was in, I suggested the dungarees be replaced with BDUs, since the other branches were in them, but the Navy ones should be gray, as in haze gray. I’m pretty sure sailors are done fighting in the desert, so they don’t need khaki BDUs (2POCs).
