I'll tell you a secret too. Become a prayer leader. I am atheist AF but I lead the protestant marines. You eat chow with other prayer leaders separate from your PLT on Sunday and get a few extra away in the morning too. It really was easy to do because the Navy Chaplains give you a prayer leader book that has all the popular verses for each type of emotion.

I guarantee you that there will be a black market for using the phones now. Overnight watches will be swiping keys and letting other sailors use the phones for money. That's if things go well. When things stop going well, we're going to see an instance of the phone locker being broken into and all the phones broken or stolen and that will become a huge cluster as well.

In BCT, our cell phones are in big metal chests in plastic bags with individual numbers. When Sundays came along, two trainees would grab each platoon’s chest and open them in front of every platoon. We would grab our phone bags and hold our phones above our heads. Then they told us we had 30 minutes to use our phones and we would spread out and sit down to listen to music, FaceTime or call. After 30 minutes were up, we put them back in the bags. Put them in the chest and they are locked away until next week.

We were there for 8 weeks, and probably only spent 1 hour on the phone talking to loved ones. It did not interfere with any training, and only served as an incentive for excellence. By all means, I'm not a Mental Health Professional, but that clinical psychologist is basically admitting to being an enabler. They should know that what they described is what Nicky succinctly called an addiction, and his guidance is to basically just lean into it to reduce attrition. Because the best strategy is to kick the can down the road for when its time to go on their first deployment and then thats the time they claim mental distress because the phone is no longer a viable option. So now instead of losing kids a boot camp where investment is still minimal, we're losing them underway to MEDEVAC and the remaining crew have to pick up the slack. That won't have knock on effects because it's not like sailors aren't overworked as is. Unless you're someone like me who outside of KZread, and it barely counts, has no social media. If I don't have signal, or otherwise in a place where KZread isnt prudent, I pull up the kindle and read. Its so much better for one's mental health to maintain an inner monologue that doesnt get atrophied by constant audiovisual bombardment.

Exactly. They’re acting like this perpetuates some sort of addiction to phones. It doesn’t. The recruits were already getting these calls just on crappy pay phones that were notorious for being extremely hard to hear. Now they get to use 21st century technology to place the calls. The only difference is now they won’t be charged an outrageous sum of money to call loved ones, who may not pick up thanks to unknown numbers. And that’s if the landline was working which many were not.

  • @golfery5119

    3 ай бұрын

Yeah, even if you don't look at the fact that more young people nowadays feel the need to join the military since more people today don't have as hard of a time landing a job, more people today are just aware of how bad the military is. More people know more now how much the military as a whole sucks as it is. Then you add on toxic leadership, which while that exists everywhere in all jobs both military and in civilian world, is arguably worse in the military because a civilian employer can't throw you in jail for not wanting to bow down to his or her will, and you can also change your job if you can get another one. Then there's the quality of life, and more people nowadays know how worse the military can be depending on the branch you are talking about or certain aspects in each branch. So they are more aware now how bad being a flight mechanic in the Air force is while also knowing that the rest of the Air Force overall doesn't suck as bad. They know how rough life on a navy ship especially as a lower enlisted is. And they know how the Army (although less so outside of the forscom aspect) and Marines are overall the two worst branches of the military.

Nicky, the only logical reason I could see for this is that in two years those phone booths are going to go away. AT&T announced last month to its landline customers that the landline service is being discontinued in the US in two years. That means no pay phones anywhere. You can’t do VOIP without the Internet, and that would require a costly upgrade to the remaining pay phones out there. Personally, I hate this. When an emergency happens, that landline would be the only thing that would still work. After surviving natural disasters and not having power or clean water for more than two weeks, that land line was the only thing left to get help.

For VoIP they have NMCI........ Ahahahahahahahahaha sorry had to. But they can put in VoIP phones to cover this. But like Nicky stated govt contract is the main reason. Someone getting paid. I'd say this, I went to great mistakes in 2013 and was the "cell phone out the bus" then mail it back home. I think it would be better to keep the cell phone in a lock box till graduation. Because trying to get your phone back at graduation can be very difficult. Especially if your family can't be there. That's my 2 cents.

That snow is for real! The base is north of Chicago; right by Lake Michigan. The red cord is worn by Recruit Division Commanders (R.D.C. / drill sergeant). Navy Boot Camp is 10 weeks long. A total of 5 calls seems right. You get one (30-second ?) "I have arrived safely," call, and a call about every three weeks - but you never know which week. So the family sits by the phone on Sunday afternoons. But if the recruits screw up, they delay that division's phone privileges for a week! No explanation given to the families. By the end, I had over two-dozen reasons to hate the Navy. You get two calls at a random time; first it's the, "I am a sailor," call after they complete Battle Stations. They switch hats from one that says "Recruit" to one that says "Navy"; it's a big deal! And one last call to confirm they are graduating so you can make final arrangements for your visit. Most of these calls are... I can't remember, a decent amount of time but always frantic because you miss them so much and you never know when they will have to hang up. I DO NOT BLAME THE BOOT CAMP COMMANDERS FOR ALLOWING CELL PHONES; Congress won't spend the money to fix the phone-banks and a bunch of the pay-phones do not work. This randomly cuts down on how much time is available to each sailor. It's a big pain in the ass to get them a phone-card - and they can't call home unless they have enough minutes. Those are no longer problems. The first thing my son did was call his family and friends as we drove off the base. The worse part is he forgot to call his girlfriend before he left and didn't bring her mailing address; had some explaining to do. Can you imagine getting to Boot Camp and not remembering your family's phone number?

I’ve noticed in my experience with businesses that the successful ones have good employees , pay them well and treat them well. The ‘ Treat them well ‘ part is most easily done for the military. Basically, stop screwing people for general purpose reasons. It’s pissing people off and it definitely made me angry to the point that I still remember things today. The military is competing with the civilian sector for good people. The military is losing very badly. Some civilian companies are having real problems. I don’t expect the Navy to start providing hot tub spas and filet mignon and Dom Peringon champagne for dinner. How about shortened work days for people who had the mid watch or forming a actual investigation team to check out complaints of abuse’s of authority. This would work if it isn’t used to just cover up incidents or threaten people to remain quiet about everything. Be open to mistakes to learn how to not repeat them again instead of looking for the nearest E6 or below to blame. The failing civilian companies have the same mindset as the Navy and that why they’re failing. These companies go out of business and that’s it. I worked in a restaurant and the owner brought in a ‘ restaurant consultant ‘. This woman did nothing whatsoever. She was a complete waste of time and money. Military: Learn from that mistake. If there are ineffective or incompetent people ; Replace them immediately.

At in-processing I've had to deal with starvation, no bathroom breaks, no healthcare, toxic civilian employees, and just general incompetance. I got stuck with a bag with no towels, and when I told a drill sergent he told me I was lying. I also had to march to a new barracks everyday and leave my stuff out in the hot sun in the middle of summer because they didn't want to assign us one. After that I should've just asked to go home because since 2018 my entire Army experience was incredibly ridiculous and horrific and now I regret joining. The Army doesn't a give a f about their soldiers and doesn't deserve them.

@@romannavarro1178 I was in for close to three years and I don't recommend the Army at all. You will spend 99% of your time doing worthless details and never your MOS, have to do PT in the early morning everyday, and you will have zero ability to walk anywhere by yourself (even to throw trash in the dumpster) until your first duty station. You will get way more from joining the Coast Guard, Space Force, and Air Force than you ever will in the Army. The Army will also take prior service from those branches, but not the other way around. So for example, if you just left the Army and wanted to go Coast Guard they won't accept you. Nobody wants that toxicity within its ranks. My Army experience was really horrific since day one at in-processing and I think we all deserve better than that.

It will be difficult to make sure that the recruits are not using apps or other prohibited crap... I still remember the phones in the RTC Nex though. I went through December of 2016, and they were hit or miss. Some worked, some didn't. This could work, and could honestly be a better option in the grand scheme of things. I am definitely in favor of the email idea though. Despite all of the hate we catch, I would say that RTC was a decent enough representation of life in the fleet.

The good ones won't make it pass MEPs. Due to financial debt or medical history or criminal offense. This would be waived during GWOT or future Ops. Remember, the military doesn't want THINKERS. There is a reason why a large number of troops were kicked out during GWOT. Good or bad, Studs or Turds. The DOD knew troops were being misled and knew it's all BS. Like in the civilian world, your employer makes you work a shift and fires you. 😂

Not a domino, just a pendulum swing... We have kids entering the military that have carried a cell phone with them since the 6th grade (if not earlier.) Now you are asking them to quit their digital addiction cold-turkey and expecting that to go well. (Heck, I go through withdrawals when I'm camping out of cell range!) Like all other policies of similar impact, this is going to take a few swings of the pendulum to get right.

There wouldn't be a recruiting crisis if they'd stop denying people over little things like debts in collections, addicts in recovery, or forgetting one time when you were in the hospital, and being flabbergasted that someone would want to forget about a tough time in their past. There used to be a mindset of "someone fucking their life up can turn it around with the discipline they get in the military" which is gone now.

This is not a new phenomenon. It has occurred during multiple times in military history when recruiting suffered or volumes of servicemembers were required. It was quite common in Vietnam, Gulf War, and GWOT. For example, one of my CMDs in early 2000s was OSUT, and we were forced to allow soldiers to wear tennis shoes on road marches even without profiles. I fought for the drills. Another following a FORSCOM combat CMD assignment was USAREC regional CMD and MEPS. This was a real %$#%storm based on ASVAB, graduation, and medical changes. We called it the "pool ball" IQ days despite higher levels of patriotism. All actions through directed choice have consequences.

So YES you can use a computer to do banking, but if you need a two-way confirmation from your email, you'll likely need your phone to confirm that log in.

Plt 2083 got an extra call after the rifle range because we had the highest average during qualification, we got "maintenance" during "Mess and Maintenance" week, the Drill Instructors were very happy. Also, the recruit leaders, Guide, Squad Leaders and Scribe were given an extra phone call because of the extra responsibilities we had.

I saw some video on army basic training from like the early nineties or late eighties. In the dfac or chow hall or mess hall (whatever you want to call it, I think the army called it "mess hall" then), they actually had a short order section serving burgers. Burgers for basic. I never saw burgers in dining facility until I actually got operational. And I have heard that up until the seventies or possibly later, trainees at some point during basic were actually allowed to have passes, which was something I could get until late in my AIT time (in early 2018). I have even heard, and I don't know how true this is and if so, when it ended, that trainees in basic were even allowed to literally smoke cigarettes. I'm not talking about "getting smoked" by a drill sergeant for push ups, I'm talking about literally smoking cigarettes. So definitely while there are some things newer generations can do that previous generations weren't, it also works the other way. I've been told by several old timers that barracks personnel were allowed to smoke tobacco inside their rooms, something that would get you into very serious trouble nowadays even if you are in the room by yourself with an open window.
