I need to upgrade, and this reveiw was very helpful. GenII is just not cutting it in the "packable" category as you indicate. Now to find a honest vendor. Thanks for the detail review !

+Andy Palm Thank you! Check around on Ebay. It may take a bit, but you can sometimes come across a good deal. Also just Google the Gen III Multicam and you will find other dealers selling this. Ken

Hey Kjumper - great review! I purchased the Lvl 6 after watching your review, but I think there's a definite use for the lvl 5 as well. In regards to size to you find them quite similar fitting between the 5 & 6 - is one larger/slimmer than the other?

I used my level 5 set for high mountain deer hunting this year. Performed great, but it does absorb water in the shoulder areas. We only got rain light rain a few times, so I'm not too sure about heavy rains. I might try KIWI waterproof spray on it for next year.

THATS BECAUSE IF YOU GOT IT USED, THE RUCKSACK SHOULDER STRAPS ACTUALLY EAT THRU THE GORETEX EVENTUALLY.

@Duffelbag Drag you actually answered some questions i had. i just bought one on ebay and suspected it wasnt EXACTLY as described, and yeah ur right i got goretex boots and its a membrane grey, on the inside.. and THERE ARE SOME of those gen III jackets that have the grey stuff inside (goretex) and others like u said its just the coating... either way... my second option was getting the WILD THINGS rescue jacket goretex, but its like 800$ even more in Canadian dollars.... i will try this 230$ Gen III jacket first and see how i feel.... but if it aint good enough ima go for the WILD THINGS one. The GEN 4 trousers tho. those are real gore tex on ebay anyways, there are surplus websites also but ebay has a good choic of authentic multicams, im getting everything multicam now, basically re-buying some stuff i already have to switch camo.

@Duffelbag Drag also i dont know why i said goretex this is clearly the soft shell not the hard shell, i bought the hard shell, i just got confused here my bad.

@Duffelbag Drag Oh shit you're right, this jacket is level 5 rather than level 6. Here I am getting all confused and shit about some saying it's great and others saying "dude, not waterproof".

@Duffelbag Drag Yeah I saw that about the pocket access. I got out of the army in 2013 and don't remember the level 5 raincoat but we had the fleece and goretex. Was trying to get familiar again with the gear and I kept getting confused between the 2 jackets until I found the list with pictures after reading these comments. Happy to get it all sorted out so I could make a confident purchase.

The way I see it this is a replacement for the m65 and wet weather gear minus a liner.

I recently acquired one of these jackets from my local Goodwill; despite being only slightly heavier material than the standard ACU uniform top, it's kept me comfortable in temperatures into the 40's Fahrenheit.

+ArimaKihe1 I actually wore it out the other day in a really heavy downpour and I stayed bone dry. I haven't found any waterproofing issues at all with the level 5. Ken

Interesting. Thanks for the reply! Have you used a Level 5 in prolonged heavy showers or just the occasional downpour? I hunt in NZ and need something that can handle the stop/start showers we get -_-

This was a pretty heavy rainstorm that went on for a couple of hours. If you wanted to spray with a fabric protector such as Scotchguard, then you wouold have that extra layer of waterproofing.

Mr. kjumper1, what is official temp range of Lvl 5 and Lvl 6? Live in Russia, summer night can be 9-13 Celsius here, not even spring or autumn. Need your advice. Thank you.

This was copied directly from the manufactures website: adsinc.com/equipment/gen-iii-ecwcs/ Level 5 Level V: Soft Shell Cold Weather Jacket & Trousers Shell Layer: Designed to be worn with base and insulation levels for use in moderate to cold conditions. The Soft Shell Cold Weather Jacket and Trousers are designed for use in moderate to cold weather conditions as a soft shell combined with other base and insulative layers. Level 6 Level VI: Extreme Wet/Cold Weather Jacket & Trousers Shell Layer: A waterproof barrier designed to be worn over other levels in moderate to cold wet conditions alternating between freezing and thawing. The Wet/Cold Weather Jacket and Trousers are designed for use in moderate to cold wet conditions as a hard shell layer combined with other base and insulative layers. The Gen III ECWCS is designed to maintain adequate environmental protection in temperatures ranging between -60 and +40 Fahrenheit (about -51 and +4 Celsius). This means the entire GEN III ensemble such as shown on the ADSinc website. Hope this information helped? Ken

Got this jacket and trousers and they dont breath at all. My sweat is just stops on the inner wall of the jacket and it does not go out. Does anybody have an idea why is that happening? I also use the level 6 gore-tex jacket and trousers and I have no such problems with them.

Good day Sir, very great review!! Kindly can you give me some advices for the size? I'm 5'7", 37" chest and 155lbs, I usually wear a USGI multicam Ocp Uniform in Small regular, i have a USGI gen 3 Level 4 wind jacket in Medium regular and fits great, a USGI gen 3 level 6 goretex in Medium regular and this it's to much big. I would like to get a gen 3 level 5 soft shell, does this fits like level six? So i'll get a smaller size... Thanks in Advance

IMHO you're supposed to take the same size as your BDU/ACU, since they run larger as you go up in Levels, meant to be worn one after the other one. I have all M/R and it's fine. The only one that runs HUGE is Patagonia.
