Review Demo - Electro-Harmonix Canyon

Read the review: bit.ly/EHXCanyon
Whenever Electro-Harmonix releases a delay pedal, guitarists tend to perk up their ears. Little wonder- the company has a great track record where echo is concerned. The original Deluxe Memory Man secured the EHX’s place in the delay pedal hall of fame decades ago. And modern evolutions of the Memory Man are known for cramming in whole worlds of control that can occupy the most restless tone shaper. The Canyon Delay & Looper takes EHX’s modern digital-delay formula a step further through downsizing. But while Canyon is small, it’s rich with powerful sound-shaping features and echoes that range from familiar to extraterrestrial.
At a casual first glance, the control layout on the sturdy, Nano-sized metal box struck me as minimal, if well thought-out. The three delay controls-FX level, delay, and feedback-are typical enough. But it’s the mode selector that tips the Canyon’s capable hand. With this one knob you can select any of nine delays, a sample-and-hold function, or a looper.
It’s an efficient design and, impressively, it only scratches the surface of what the pedal can do, because some of the best sounds come from secondary functions that you don’t see among the 11 rotary knob settings. But while the breadth of the functions is impressive, it’s the Canyon's ability to blend these features so seamlessly and simply that really blew me away.

    This guy demonstrated the sample/hold function better than any other review video I’ve seen of this pedal. This feature has made up my mind. I’m buying it. It’s also perfect for someone like me who is learning to improvise leads over a particular key. I can get the key established and it play forever and just practice all night over it.

    I have a Canyon on my board...love it, but two issues... like he said the writing is very small, low contrast and hard to read, especially in dim lighting. Second issue is HUGE!!! YOU CAN'T LOOP IT'S OWN EFFECTS. I thought it would be so cool if I could loop and overdub all the different echoes, but alas, you cannot. Hence a separate looper is required. The secondary functions are very cool. With some tweaking you can get some hip organ sounds. I've had many a late night space jams with the Canyon. Euphoric.

    Love 7.34+ 'Wicked Game'. I have this box and it's great but there's a downside to having so many FX in one box --- if you're gigging or home recording or even just noodling, it's a fiddle to keep changing and re-setting. And as the case has no graduated markers for you to make precise notes for favoured setups, it's always hit-and-miss as to whether you can get back to exactly where you were. The same comment goes for the staggeringly powerful 'Epitome' (Epitom3) pedal. Now - if only EH could create a box which could store settings so that a single knob or switch could recall them without having to twiddle ... that would he heaven.

    Just ordered this pedal primarily for the Echo, Tape and Verb modes. Agree it probably requires adjustment when switching modes; I'll take a photo of preferred settings for these three modes. Fortunately, the secondary settings (for each mode) are saved to memory.

  • @universalmanchild

    @universalmanchild

    Using the trem bar is essential. That's part of the reason you use delay. If you can't get an understanding of how the pedal sounds then there is something wrong.

  • @elbeeuk

    @elbeeuk

    6 жыл бұрын

    Rob Cash I agree mate. Whammy isn't essential. Using whammy gives the impression that the flat delay is modulated when it's not. Like you, I want to hear the straight delay sound. Yes you can use a whammy if you feel it's essential in the real world but when demoing, just let us hear the basic pedal sound with the basic guitar sound.

  • @alansturgess1324

    @alansturgess1324

    Agreed. clean tones should always be the priority for at least half of demos for guitars and pedals. Whammy bars are good - but lets hear sounds without. Reverb is great - but the same applies. Play it clean and THEN play around.

    Gotta get me one of these pedals. I love making experimental music like I used to do back in the mid 70's. So many artists have copied my experiments; just wish I'd have recorded it back then so I could prove what I'd done. Wish I had my '72 Telecaster back and my Kustom 150 amp with speaker box that had 3 15 inch Altec Lansing's in it. I like the shimmer reverb and the reverse settings on this pedal. I like playin' music backwards. Makes for some great psychedelic music. Gonna have to get a wah wah pedal to boot. Best guitar I ever played was a Gretsch Country Gentleman. That was a great guitar even better than my Ibanez and my old Fender Telecaster. Ya know, once ya get used to the pedal you don't need to see the settings; you'll know where they're at if you use it enough.

    I've played with this for a while now and while it has some pretty amazing algorithms it also has its quirks. So be aware of them. The delays don't sound very natural and nothing like a memory man. Truth be told, it's barely passable for a "pro" delay. It sounds very artificial. Your mistakes will also be greatly amplified, rather than hidden like most delays would do. In fact, it can kinda glitch and take you off your rhythm especially when you have modular settings applied. The internal tracking seems to be the problem, like some of ehx other pedals. That said, if you are a bedroom player/sound maker, there is a lot of strange sounds to conjure up.
