EHX Canyon vs. TC Electronic Flashback
Музыка
A comparison of two similar compact multi-delays, the TC Electronic Flashback and the new Electro-Harmonix Canyon. Both of these pack a large multi-delay worth of engines into a very small footprint.

Unless I state otherwise in the video, everything I test out on here is stuff that I bought myself. There are no paid reviews on this channel and only a couple times have I ever had items sent to me for review. All opinions are my own!

You helped me understand the dotted eighth mode - thank you! I believe I like the flexibility of the tonal variety of the Canyon in the comparison.
"where they directly overlap" -- good distinction and keeps your vid focused.
Thanks for comparing the two. I have the Flashback and was looking at the Canyon.
electro harmonix took the flashback delay and they made it their own. you sold me at the canyon. thanks for the video shootout.
very nice video. thanks for comparing them both. So far I have the tc electronics mojomojo OD and ditto Looper at home. Both did not disappoint me. But it looks this time it's going to be my first EHX pedal.

Was excited to see you compared these two. I've been debating getting a Canyon. Your last pedal board video was one of the first I watched when I was just getting into the pedal game last August. I think I am leaning toward selling my Alexander Pedals Radical delay and picking up the Canyon and Alexander Pedals History Lesson.

I've heard very good things about the History Lesson but never had a chance to try one. Alexander Pedals make some intriguing stuff...
Canyon for sure. The shimmer feature adds a nice effect when used on the Orchestra setting on the Mel 9. Adds a whole new dynamic. Clean all the way.
Thanks for the good review of the differences👍🏼
Excellent review. Thanks for posting!
Had a Flashback, have a Canyon. Huge upgrade in terms of quality of sound and authenticity of delay.
This was a very helpful comparison, thanks!
I like both. I like TC because of the toneprint you can put on it.
Good comparison video, very informative, thanks man.
Really nice demo. I wanted to like the TC more than I actually did. I thought the canyon sound richer all the way through. . The TC looks so drab next to the canyon, so this may be influencing me!
Flashback has stereo, canyon has a better tap tempo, each has a few modes the other doesn't. I say the canyon is the way to go.
Great comparison video. In my opinion, i think Flashback sounded better, the digital, analog, tape and modulated was more pronounced. Reverse was a clear one for the Canyon. I was expecting that the analog would be much better for the canyon because of their memory man but this shows otherwise. I guess the thing worth buying for the Canyon would be the octave and shimmer mode. thanks for this video man.

I'd say that the canyon tops the original flashback, but with the added expression control of the 'mash' setting on the flashback 2, flashback 2 wins by a good amount. The tape echo with mash and the crystal effects are amazing on that pedal. plus three tone print settings that include featured toneprints from famous musicians and range from straight-forward analog delay to hellicopter delay and hammond organ tones are so awesome.
The Canyon is such a beautiful piece of equipment
The flashback sounds way more pronounced and musical ,,, thank you for ur videos bro
I have the Canyon, it can be a bit overwhelming, all I really need is some sweet reverb with slight delay and it does that really well. With so many choices to choose from the Canyon wide array of options in such a small package makes it very attractive.

@boreed5734

@@michaeljohnson6201 It can be very challenging to get that exact sweet spot you're looking for, you have to finagle it and tweak it ever so slightly and remember where you set it because I found out while moving my pedal board around to different gigs and such or just in transit the knobs can move slightly from your last settings and will have to be adjusted back to your liking, it's also a bummer that you can't save settings once the knobs moves.
Always thought my Flashback mini sounded a little muddy. This video proves it. Got a canyon on the way.

@Tom really, really……………………. Good
Digital delay is of course very similar. It would have been nice to see a comparison of the extreme settings, like minimum and maximum delay times. The modulated modes are slightly different. Also. The Canyon adds a touch of reverb and modulates the signal with tremolo (pitch oscillation). The Flashback adds a chorus. You can make the tremolo on the Canyon very extreme. The Canyon reverse has a sensitivity setting which lets you give it a hint as to what part of the riff should be the start of the reverse by playing harder at the beginning of the riff. The DMM (Deluxe Memory Man) emulation on the Canyon also includes a setting to add DMM modulation that you can range from tremolo (pitch oscillation) to chorus just like on the original DMM. So, it's essentially a DMM tremolo/chorus as well. The Canyon tape delay allows you to adjust the "dirtiness" of the heads as well as the wow and flutter (stretching) of the tape. The Canyon has lots of secondary controls that you access by holding down the "Tap" button. The Canyon also allows you to control the tails with an internal switch and allows you to attach an external tap switch which allows you to set the temp with tap without alternating the effect on and off while you do it. With just a little bit of easy tweaking you can use the Canyon delay as a 1. Comb Filter 2. Vibrato 3. Ring Modulator 4. Ducking Reverb with Tails Control 5. POG (Polyphonic Octave Generator) 6. Chorus 7. Pad or Drone I outline how to do all of those in the EHX forums here: www.ehx.com/forums/viewforum/4/
Ive got a Canyon and love it! Im buying the TC Flashback because its similar but can run on a 9volt battery so it can be usec with a battery powered amp,etc. Its just a bit more portable.
The TC Flashback *does have 100% wet on reverse* but you have to set "Feedback" to 9 o'clock or less. EH does reverse delay way better: it samples the entire phrases you play and it's dynamic, vs. the Flashback which has a "rolling" sampler so you can get clicks or chunks of phrases.
@jasonodea9177
7 жыл бұрын
I have a Flashback and didn't know that about 100% wet, thank you.
This was an excellent demo, but didn't demonstrate half of what the Canyon is capable of. My favorite things are the quirky sounds you can get like using the octave delay with the delay completely out. It's a really decent octave impression. The "spooky" delay, as I like to call it is a lot of fun too.
EHX has the their modes that are time-tested and proven. Canyon all the way.
Canyon does so much more : equal repeats and you can set the number of them with the feedback know, a looper, a very good reverb...
Is there a way to make the canyons light not be blinking when you turn it on. I'd like to be able to get no repeats if I want and so far it seems like adjusting the delay knob is the only thing to do this.
Great demo. One of the better ones out there. I bought the Canyon, but my color blindness is going to force me to sell it and get the flashback since I can't distinguish the different LED lights that indicate the different tap/divide settings. If you can see the lights, I think it would be a nice feature on stage. Something to think about if you are color blind though.

This about color blindness is very very important, and electro-harmonix unfortunately also use colored modes for the Ocean 11, which is an awesome alternative to tc electronic's hall of fame 2, much like the canyon is to the flashback. Hall of fame 2 also has that digital tone programming thing, which is quite awesome, so I think you'll do fine with any tc electronic option. Cheers and thanks for bringing this to the discussion!
To make the flashback reverse totally wet, you have to turn the feedback all the way down

Yes, the Canyon sounds sweeter in most modes. But as a synth player, I'll have to stick to my Flashback because (1) I really need the stereo ins & outs, (2) it can handle very hot line level signals, and (3) it is highly tweakable thanks to its TonePrint software.

No, it's easy, or at least I think so. You can save one preset and then dial in a second sound, so right there you can jump back and forth between two settings. If you need to actually adjust the setting you're on in real time, the knobs for Mix and Decay Time are big enough to move with your foot, I wouldn't try and move the smaller knobs around that way but I've changed mix level and stuff by just nudging it.

You have to turn the feedback knob all the way down on the flashback reverse mode to get 100% wet. I'm not super familiar with U2 per se - beyond just the handful of songs that everyone knows - but The Edge popularized that dotted eighth thing, which both pedals do exceedingly well. Personally I love the Flashback. One of my favorite delay pedals. I want to love EHX but they have such a fondness for putting trippy, psychedelic sounds into things that it's a bit of a love/hate thing.
100% Effects level should always be 100% wet. Does Canyon do this with the delay settings? The tc doesn't.
Hi, a couple of questions about secondary knobs function on Canyon delay. For example... When i turn knobs in secondary mode, does this changed settings remain in the standard mode when i return to it or just stay in that secondary mode? I ask this because of chance to ruin or screw up default settings in standard mode with messing in secondary, without memory how it was before messing with controls in secondary mode. Further more, does the pedal memorize the knob position of the settings in the secondary mode when you return to it later, or behave in „one time only“ manner? To be more specific, when turn knobs in some way in the secondary mode, then return to normal, turn the knobs in a different position, then return to secondary, the sound remains like I leave it before returning to normal mode or apply automatically the new position of knobs, which I change in mean time, to sound? Both questions are about same thing with different approach. And one more thing ... Does pedal change, in any way, original, dry sound of an instrument when engaged? I mean both on first stroke (first note or chord than you strike) and delayed, repeated one? Or there are no changes in continuity, tone of sound, delayed or not? Apologize for so mush data and questioning. Please help. Thx in advance!

Hi - I'm sorry to say, I'm no Canyon expert. I basically owned this one long enough to make this video with it, then sold it again. From what I read in the manual, the pedal 'remembers' where the primary knobs were before you went into secondary mode, so once you leave secondary mode, unless you touch the knobs again, they stay where they were before. Likewise, it remembers your secondary mode settings even if you switch delay types or turn the pedal off, I'm pretty sure. Hope that helps! I didn't actually spend all that much time with this pedal, but I have read the manual and that's what it seemed to say.

The Flashback reverse does go 100%, if you use the “Mash” function and hold the switch down while playing. I have found that to be extremely useful live, and allows more sonic options, in combination with the controls later, than The Canyon. Also, the Flashback allows you to download additional presets via your phone, which is pretty cool.

@jimabrahams3576

Yep - it’s worth checking - almost all of the settings have some kind of touch - sensitive mash function, that makes the switch function as an expression pedal. For instance, in the tape setting, it ramps the speed up, & into self-oscillation, and down as you release it, pretty cool. Can’t lose with either pedal!
Can you set the tap on the canyon when the pedal is off?
@LeFeversAudio

I think technically with each tap you're turning the pedal on and off, so the trick is to make sure that your very last tap ends with it being on. So if you'd rather it stay off, you could end with an 'off' tap. Now with external tap, I'm not sure. I'll bet you could tap in on an external tap button while it's off, most pedals allow that.

CANYON wins : chimey/ ring natural tone ( not stiff or constipated)
The Canyon almost seemed to add a bit of compression, resulting in a very big and expansive tone. The Flashback is typically TC Electronics pristine, and the decay seemed more 'natural.' I haven’t used the Zoom; though I’ve definitely thought about checking it out. I have one friend I really respect who likes it.
If you only had one foot pedal and it was a delay then MAYBE the Canyon has a slight edge because of the slightly brighter tone and an almost reverb effect. If you have multiple pedals including a reverb, TC all the way. But even then, in my experience with the Flashback I have gotten way better tone from it than what I am hearing from it in this video both with and without other effect pedals. I would be interested to see what his guitar settings and amp settings are. For whatever reason, the Flashback is giving some distortion. It shouldn't. This wasn't the best representation of the Flashback. So, the Flashback still wins in my opinion. Better company. Better pedal. Great review though!
