Review | BMW M3 | E90 E92 E93 | The Hype Machine

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We attempt to review the 2008 - 2013 previous gen BMW M3 in greater detail than anything seen previously. We cut through plenty of the brand BS. With sports cars from Porsche, Lotus, Ford, Audi etc, it's hard to just look at the M brand as the main player. We dive into the good, bad and ugly of this generation and BMW in general from rod bearings, quality issues and cost of ownership. This review doubles as a buyers guide for those looking at this car.

Aftermarket Warranty: USAA
(Notes Rod Bearings)
Rod Bearings were switched by BMW in 2011.5 from lead/copper to tin/aluminum. While harder, the wear material is harder to track with oil analysis and also does nothing to help with clearances.
(Notes Motor)
S65, S85 (V10) Are very closely related and share many of the same problems and issues and design. Motors are mostly hand built, however the E9x series cars were built along side the 3 Series in the same factory.

Scott made a very subtle point at 13:00. I was a BMW Service Advisor at one time. Scott is correct that the customers with the base 128s and 328s, the basic models, were the most rude, demanding, selfish, and hardest customers to deal with. The 750iL or M5, 650 or X6 customers were awesome. They did not mind if the only loaner I had was a Z4 or something less than their BMW. I actually had an M6 customer offer his 3 Series loaner to a 128 owner who lost her mind when I told her all I had left was a Mazda 6 from our sister dealership’s fleet.

Dr Davin Lim look at Doug Demuro, dude is a straight character thats for sure, but people love him, Subscriber count shows whether the public does or doesnt like your videos, kinda why hes over a million. But notice how Doug doesnt go even close in detail to how savage goes in detail, great reviews for sure but i can tell you the reason this channel has grown so slowly is due to these 40 minute videos. “Track people” in the car world is a very small group of individuals, but hey Nurburgring times are definitely a bragging right!

Great video - I've had the 2008 sedan version for the last five years and for what it's worth i'll give you my experience : Bad stuff : I blew the power steering pump and the power steering / AC belt basically detonated. About $2k to fix and tricky to bleed the new pump - the car isn't extremely fast off the line. - long warm up time - rattle from the cheap shift knob Good stuff: - the steering wheel feels amazing. Perfect thickness, perfect feedback. - the power is very controllable, and yet frenetic. This car makes you feel like an F1 star - the seats are very comfortable. And the engine sounds sort of like a Ferrari from the cockpit. It revs from 5k to 8k very quickly. - it's practical three seasons a year. The back seat fits a kid's car seat no problem. - it is outstandingly fun to drive. - an independent euro garage can do most of your maintenance work at a huge discount. - it's a sleeper, so unless a car-guy sees it (and they're usually totally nice) you tend not to have socialist lunatics try to carve their names into the paint when you park it to go out for dinner. I drive a 997 turbo occasionally as a collector car but the m3 feels just as special, much more approachable, and often more fun to drive.

TheAceHD true - but what I mean is at low speeds when the "m mode" is in normal, the car is a breeze to drive, but when you step on it, and build the revs, it starts accumulating momentum at a surprising pace. It's a dichotomous car and varies in behavior depending on how you're driving it.

It's reasonably quick off the line. 90% of the torque kicks in at 3000 rpm, and with low gearing and a quick-revving demeanor, the M3 really keeps pulling and pulling until redline. It's not like a turbo engine where the torque actually rapidly decreases after it's 2000 rpm peak. Free revving engines are just so much fun; they're quick and amplify the sense of speed.

UV damage to the clear coating is probably a bigger concern especially on daily driven (sun exposed) cars. The e90 ///M3 (sedan) was not available with the CF roof panel from what I recall. My 2009 (slicktop iDrive delete with 6MT and cloth/leather interior) was a sublime machine, I miss dearly. After 3 years away, I’m actually shopping for them again. Viva ///M3!

Fantastic thorough review - informative, witty/dry (actually funny instead of some reviewers trying to be), and beautiful cinematography. As an owner of a 2011 e92 M3 (with the competition package but otherwise coincidentally spec'ed similarly - Alpine White / Black with moonroof and stock sound system) - couple points I wanted to note 1. Shifter - It's not great for racing but just like the race, is a great compromise. It's ergonomic for everyday use. The throws aren't horrendous, shaft is much shorter than a stock e46 M3. It's a shifter you can live with for 50k miles instead of a short shifter which seems novel and precise at first but the effort and mechanical jolt instantly gets old after 5k miles. Replacing it btw doesn't require the removal of the center console. The boot has tabs that click in, so you just pry it out. Either cut the old knob off, or buy a new boot and knob and you're done. 2. Stock sound system - It plays loudly without distortion thanks to BMW's unique underseat bass woofer seperated from a 4" mid-range, but the complaint is the sound is muddy compared to some cars - including the $20k category. Perhaps the EQ wasn't setup right for road environment (treble and bass boosted to compensate for road noise) but it's like I can never really heard the richness of music unless I turn it up way loud. It sounds lifeless, and flat when played quietly. Treble and Bass knobs just make it "better" in the wrong ways, so worse in this case. 3. ZCP cars even in comfort are a lot rougher on the road, and low profile 19" tires let in a lot of noise. Maybe because I'm at 60k miles and the struts are getting old but many friends cannot believe they are riding a stock car when sitting passenger. It's rather jarring at times - I'm sure thanks to the 10-15mm lowered height and stiffer springs all around. Nothing like a 3-series which is truly great for everyday driving. 4. Carbon trim is a imitated leather, not real CF. Cost cutting without a doubt (new M3/M4 have real CF) 5. Carbon roof if need be can be replaced, albeit expensive. A shop drills, pries out the old roof, and glues in a new one. I had it done to a M6 I used to own with a bad roof. 6. Torque - around town, it's a bit annoying. The motor being a high rev race design doesn't get in it's power band until 4k and onward. If you floor the car at 2.5k rpm in 2nd or 3rd gear, it's a noticeable delay in pickup. 7. Rod bearings and actuators is a thing. It is what it is, just fix it with BE bearings parts and be done with it. 8. Interior bit complaints - seat belt receptacle drops seat belt 1/100 times. Never seen a broken one between all my e92 buddies. BMW heard the complaints and next generation car gets rid of the novel cup holders for traditional ones, sitting where the ash tray is now.

I have almost the exact same E92 M3 as yours, other than mine has red interior and the technology package (better audio system). Well since I own one, and having bought it used as well, although with very very low mileage, I've done a lot of research on it and have also seen many reviews on it. And I just have to say from the many videos I have seen on the E92 BMW M3, yours is the best. Thank you for making such a great quality video on it. And I actually agree with pretty much everything you have said (other than the cup holder issue, I actually think they are pretty cool because you can push them in and get them out of the way). I also took it to the track 100% stock. And yes, stock brakes Suck for track use. My brake pads and brake rotors didn't hold up well at all. Also something to mention is that replacing the brake rotors for this car is REALLY expensive. Of course I understand it's an M3, BUT they are overpriced. I changed all 4 brake rotors on my previous E46 M3, and just the 2 front rotors for my E92 M3 cost as much as all 4 on my E46 M3. But anyway very well done review brother. Any new update on your M3? How's it holding up?

That could be it too, either way I "think" he was being self-deprecating, given his attitude throughout the rest of the video. Bottom line though, I don't think you need to feel sorry for him, he's got this e92 plus (apparently) the bank to maintain it (which isnt cheap, as he discussed in the video).

I appreciate the in depth nature and high production value of this review, but as an e92 m3 owner, and as many others have said, I do also disagree with you on several points. To say this car has a lack of character is a pretty wild accusation. I have absolutely no rattling in my cabin. What is your issue with the cupholders? I use them for my coffee every morning, no issues here, and passengers always think the way they slide out from the dash is clever. The shift knob is a long throw and a little mushy but easily replaced (no center console removal necessary). You have issues with the seat belt assistant but don't care to explain why, also something I've never had an issue with. Nothing about the cruise control, or any other UI in the cabin felt foreign to me, maybe I'm just a quick learner? Rod bearing issues certainly exist but it's extremely overblown. If you're concerned, have an oil evaluation done every 10k miles or so. You nailed it when talking about the balance between being a performance vehicle and something you can live with everyday, more so for me its just a place I enjoy spending time in. Also I will agree the brakes are a weak point on this vehicle, but in my opinion this is by no means a deal breaker. Knocking the car for its MPG is a little silly. It's a naturally aspirated performance V8, what do you expect? No praise for the visceral V8 rumble? You failed to capture the true heart, soul and purpose of this generation M3. Instead you seemed to get a little to hung up on a few personal nitpicky nuances. You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I'd recommend thinking twice about owning this vehicle. To me, it seems like someone else may get more enjoyment out of it.

OK... this is an M car, and the brakes are a deal breaker..... if you are running stock set up, this car will not complete the 3rd lap of any circuit - if driven to the 'Spirit of M Cars'...... I do own a M3, I do love them, but realise their shortcomings. It's a good car if driven 8/10s and has better balance than the new F series (easy to drift), but as a track car... wow... needs 10K worth of upgrades (brakes, suspension) to keep up with a track focused car like a Megane 275 R or even a Mini GP after 3 laps...like I said, beautifully balanced at 8/10, .. that why I still have an M3, but for anything more... well, the video tells the story.... well done review.

  • @Danu01c

stiles05s well... I think you can actually knock it for MPG as car it competes with get way better MPG like the ISF for it's multi injection fuel system. I mean you can get 30+MPG on the highway, accelerate faster, and if it's a 2011+ it makes faster lap times because of the revised suspension and torsen differential. That's without mentioning that you can track an ISF for a weekend and still have no problems at all with brakes.

@@aluisious It will. And you pay the price for that super-tall gearing that lets you get that MPG every time you drive the car. By the time you're out of 1st gear, you have so much speed built up that the party's over if you have any interest in keeping your license. A C5 Z06 does 71MPH at redline in 1st. I appreciate Vettes for what they are. But having unusable power because of CAFE-driven gearing doesn't make for an entertaining sports car for street driving IMHO. FWIW the turbo I6 E92s aren't a heck of a lot better on fuel, particularly if you take lots of short trips. Short gears and the fact that boost is a helluva drug dooms that endeavor for most. The N55/DCT is the best of that lot on gas. This thing doesn't spin at 1800rpm at 80mph. At least you can run it through 2 gears without going to jail. To each his own. Cheers.

There is no need to remove the center console to remove the shift knob. Just remove the base and pull up hard on the shift knob and it will come out in one piece. Use the F10 M5 shift knob that's weighted and glue the leather to the original base and snap it in. Now you have a shorter, weighted and illuminated shift knob that looks and works great. Install a clutch stop while you're at it, it will make a huge difference.

I'd say that I have seen "all" (meaningful) reviews on M3s, and this is THE BEST on the e92. I owe an M3 e46 (2005, 130.000 km) and this one, the e92 (40.000 km), both with the Competition Sport packages, the SMG II on the e46 and DCT on the e92. I will owe (and love) them forever and they ALWAYS put a smile on my face (especially after a shitty day of work, or a bad day with my lady). I also should note that my daily drive to work is a SMART fortwo (451). As said, this is THE BEST review, (but :-) I want to add to your criticism starting at 32:30. KEEP IN MIND, this is a 66,000 € car (no extras, of course, which can easily add up to 92 k€) with a 4L V8 and plenty (!) of motorsport components. You don't get NO OTHER (European) car with this performance. Period. That said, you must live with "some" standard plastic components (which I really don't mind) inside, and yes, it's not a track tool (like most twice as expensive 911s, good looking Audis or obnoxious, glittery Mercs. sorry, had to build that in). But MOST IMPORTANTLY, with the 66 k€ prize tag, comes another prize that, this time, BMW has to pay. Idiots! Idiots that can afford a 66 k€ car, or 15 k€ used, that don't know how to drive a very high-performance engine: doing LAUNCH CONTROLS on a multiple daily basis (with no engine (oil) temperature) WILL KILL EVERY ENGINE (regardless of the piston rod bearing deficiencies... which there are). And again, my M3s have seen plenty of Green Hell (and other tracks) and Zero rod bearing failures. That said, the e46 is up for a VANOS, rod bearing, and oil pump inspection :-) THANKS, savage geese, and should you ever travel Bavaria, LET ME KNOW ! I'll take good care of you :-)
