    Cats do - if they're feral all they are is an invasive predator that should ideally be taken out of the wild. If they can't go to a home, they should be put down for the sake of the nature the cat will help to destroy.

    My favorite thing about Hannah is her respect for feral mamas and their feralness. She doesn't force them to accept human contact or try to break them into becoming "tame". It's nice seeing the mama's return to their outside home happier, healthier and kid free rather than in a shelter likely to be euthanized or in a house likely to be miserable. Edit: I also highly recommend reading her book Tiny But Mighty, she touches on this topic and it's very eye-opening!

    That is probably the biggest thing Hannah ever taught me: Feral Mamas are beautiful and should be accepted that way I started working at a shelter shortly after I found her videos. We have some feral moms every spring too and while I don‘t tiptoe around them, I meet them with respect and care, so I don‘t annoy them more than they already are

    I'm also glad that the feral cat still has somewhere to go. Often times, a person will do everything they can to socialize a feral cat since living in a home with a person is usually the best option for them. I appreciate that there are feral cat colony's in some area's that give these animals a place to live while they can.

    @@NicoUnken I agree. I love the cat education she gives. I think people often get confused seeing cats become friendlier towards humans. There's a difference between a pet cat that got left behind and a true, spicy feral cat. The way the mom cat ran UP the window, I can't imagine people actually trying to pet them!

    Feral cats aren't usually put in shelters, anyway. People who help feral cats only try to "re"-home the ones that show clear signs of friendliness towards people, or a history of having lived with people. And those cats wouldn't be miserable in houses, anyway.

    Cats never fail to impress me. Most give birth without a single complaint and go into mommy mode immediately. I’ve even had male kitties who do everything a mama does except for giving birth and nursing.

  • @morrnmanderson7376

    @morrnmanderson7376

    2 жыл бұрын

    Most animals give birth without complaint because giving birth for them is not nearly as traumatic as it is for human females. Human babies are one of the largest, if not THE largest, in the animal kingdom when compared to the size of the adult mother. They also have head to shoulder ratios that are enormous. Our brain size, coupled with the ability to stand and walk upright has forced evolutionary changes that require a birthing mothers pelvic bones to separate during childbirth which partly accounts for the intense pain they endure. Further, the birth canal is JUST big enough to allow for the head and shoulders of the baby to pass thru, but only with incredibly strong muscular contractions, causing further pain. Research has shown that babies heads cannot be any bigger, without changes to the females birth canal, but such evolutionary changes there would cause the female to lose the ability to stand and walk upright. While childbirth is painful and dangerous to some degree in any animal, in human females it is one of the most painful and dangerous things they can endure, which is why even today we still have such high numbers of mothers and babies die in childbirth.

  • @ariaciano6910

    @ariaciano6910

    Animals are also quiet during childbirth out of safety for them and their offspring. If they were screaming in pain as humans do, that would attract every predator (including humans) within ear shot.

    That was an awesome job: tending to the kittens' urgent care before reuniting them with mom. It's a tricky situation with ferals; they are terrified of unfamiliar surroundings but their protective and nurturing instincts trump above it all. This is a personal experience with a feral tabby. She gave birth to 2 litters in/or around the house, nested in a room but on a few occasions would transfer her babies out to the garden. She's a very good mom. She would nurse until the kittens were well past 4 months, After the weaning she was spayed. She left and returned one last time, desperately hungry. Chomping hurriedly on some kibbles she then made her exit. Amidst wistful thoughts about her foraging for food there's some comfort in knowing that she now only has to fend for herself.

I typically start weaning orphan litters off the bottle in week five so I'd say your babies are good to go.

    I really want to eventually be an emergency cat carer/foster. Basically have a small building where I can take care of cats that need temporary housing because their owners have an emergency and need someone to take care of them for a few days or to temporarily house feral/stray cats that have minor injuries or right after they get spayed/neutered just until they are healed and can be released again. The town I live in is pretty rural and there isn't that many cats comparatively so while we do have a small dog shelter we don't really have anything to help with the cats. There is a fix and release program for the county which does help with the population control a lot. There is only a very small need but still a need for an occasional cat shelter. The biggest need really is that there are a lot of people who live alone and if something happens to them like they unexpectedly are hospitalized or have to leave for a few days short notice then they have no one to take care of their pets until they get back. The dog shelter will take in and/or find temporary fosters for dogs in that situation but the cats are pretty much screwed.

    Feral mamas are so incredibly protective and loving towards their babies. A feral girl my family was feeding had babies just below our porch a few years ago, and to this day, all her grown-up kids stay by her side, groom her, and bump heads. She’s got such a lovely family. Bonus points, after her kids started loving pets from humans, she FINALLY warmed up enough to enjoy some pets herself. She’s still skittish and can’t grow out of some of her habits, but she purrs like a motorboat if you know how to approach her.

    Love mama cats, even feral ones! I assist with some TNR and we keep feral momma's with their babies as much as possible to avoid bottle feeding. After the kittens are adopted, we fix her and return her. Boy are they happy to go back outside. Outside cats usually part from their babies at a young age, so it doesn't make a difference to them. They raise their babies, do their job and protect, and once it's done they want to go home.

Mom could still see kiddos and I could slip them back to her under the bottom edge (or even cover the plexiglass in a blanket so she can’t see). Would totally recommend! Especially if your momma is feisty or you want to help your confidence around mom (the more skiddish you are the more amped up it typically makes momma)

    Sometimes, you can adopt the feral mum, too. Miss Midnight's two day old kittens needed my help early in the pandemic. It took a long time to get an appointment for mum to be spayed. Everything was closed! But, Miss Midnight took care of her kittens. When I finally got an appointment for spays and neuters, the kittens were 9 months old. When things finally opened up again, and I could make the appointment, it was "next available is in about four months". At this point, Miss Midnight would just chill in another chair in the office with her kittens. I could walk by, just not try to touch her. But, then, one day, I went to the bathroom and Miss Midnight walked up, turned around, flopped over and showed me her tummy! And...she let me touch her. Now, it has been almost two years. Miss Midnight still hates other people. But, she is really nice with me. She often lays at me feet and sleeps there. She stays in the office. She went around the house once, I saw her on the camera on the sofa looking around. She never left the office after that. Sometimes, just sometimes, ferals can surprise you.

    We recently rescued a very feral female we'd been feeding for a few months after she got pregnant. It took some time to set up a place for her to go, thus the wait, but boy were we lucky we caught her when we did- she gave birth literally two days after capture! Luckily, I volunteer at a vet office that agreed to take her in, socialize and adopt out her babies when they were old enough, get her spayed, and return her once she was ready, since we all agreed there was very little chance of her being tamed. I'm glad you were able to rescue these babs in time and that this sweet angel was given a warm, safe place to raise her kittens in. It's a harsh world out there, but it's good that the kits will be able to socialize and find good homes and the mama can be returned with no worries of future little ones being born to such a harsh life!

    I just found one kitten alone and crying in my backyard. I knew it had been there all night because I heard it, but outdoor light was out and I couldn't see it so it stayed alone crying all night. The next morning I brought it in and ordered overnight on Amazon everything I needed. I had no idea what to do and have only owned dogs. This one did not like the kitten and I spent 2 days just holding and caring for her and watching all your videos. I know from your video how many weeks she probably is and all the rest. Thank you so much. I think she is good now. and is starting to purrr, drink from the bottle, and sleeping a good 4 hours between feedings. I will get the shots and fixed and then ask my vet to recommend a good home for her with someone retired who has time to hold and pamper her. Thank you so much!

    I love TNR! It’s the best thing for cat mommas that prefer the outdoors..It makes it so they no longer birth future feral cats, they get to live more relaxed and are less likely to get cancer, and the kittens (if there are any) get homes never have to live like their mother.

    You are SO awesome! One can see how relaxed Mama’s face is when she can’t see or hear humans. …like you said, then she can focus solely on nurturing her babies. Win/win 🎉

    My cat, Princess, had a similar story. She was found by a neighbor in our courtyard with 3 kittens. She called City Critters, a TNR shelter. They came & got her & the babies. I don't know if they were all put in a foster home, but about 3 months later, they returned her to the courtyard. The neighbor called them to find out details. They said she was about 2 yrs old & since she was so feral, couldn't get adopted out like her kittens. So my friend & I fed her & another feral that lived in the yard. We both have ShihTzus & always came down with the dogs to feed the cats. Little by little, she started getting acquainted with us & the dogs who were not mean at all with the cats. She would follow us around the courtyard & wait for us to retufn with the dogs. She got to the point of sitting on the bench between Raphy (my dog) & myself so I could pet her. After a little while, she would lay her head on his thigh. Four yrs later, we decided to bring her in since the weather was predicted to go down to below zero & the other feral cat kept evicting her from each box we would put out for her so she had nowhere to stay warm. At first, she was scared, but she warmed up to us & has been the best cat ever! We've had her now for 6 years. We still can't pick her up to cuddle her, but she lays down next to me & puts the bottom half of her body on my leg! She just recently let me clip her nails!!! Princess Jade is a gem of a cat!!

    I'm so glad that you found the babies. Mama certainly does love her babies. I have a simi feral cat that I rescued several years ago. The owner had thrown out (long story). She was so young and got pregnant. I took her and the 4 kittens in. Mama is still cautious even though I've had her for several years.

    I'm glad the mom took the kittens back on I know about cats feeling more comfortable if you give them a comfortable closed off space, it starts to make them feel comfortable with less to focus on. I just adopted a kitten called Luna Hunter who's currently sat on my shoulder, she came from an adopted mom I don't know what happened but my friends cat Bonnie had recently had a litter so she was still nursing and took on 3 more kittens which I think is pretty amazing that cats do that. Also always appreciate you guys helping these cats 🐈 😻 🐈‍⬛ ❤

    Mama cat is avoidant , apprehensive and even agressive toward humans simply because she doesn't know humans so she is afraid of them , it's not that she is not a fantastic cat or a fantstic mama, it's just that she is frightened by what she does not know and to me that is yet another sign of how emotionally intelligent cats are as a species, they react with avoidance, apprehension even agression toward sthg or sby they do not know and once said stranger proves himself /herself worthy of their trust then they open up . In reality their reaction is not agression. It is simply fear of the unknown. Some of the stray cats I take care of are the complete opposite to feral when they are with me but react exactly the same way as this mama the first time I take them to the vet ...they don't know him...the second visit is better...lol
