Caring for the Tiniest Preemie Puppies

I noticed something precious about a couple of the puppies. When they were getting fed, their little tails stuck up straight. But as they were getting full and deciding they didn't want anymore, their little tails slowly drooped back down xD Is like a little babu fuel tank indicator!

My wonderful old cocker Winston purs. He's 14 now but he's done it since a puppy. He has always been around cats and when he's really comfortable and relaxed he does a really light growl almost like heavy breathing but intentional. We brought it up to the vet when he was young because we were concerned about signs of aggression. She told us that he was purring and that no one ever told him he wasn't a cat!

Last year, I took in a stray mama cat who had had a home before but had been stray for some while. She trusted me with her kittens, but would not tolerate any other cat around them, so my senior cat and a couple of frequent visitors had to stay separate. This was right before the shutdown from the pandemic. I had a heckuva time getting mama and babies to a shelter that would take them, but finally did, so they got good homes, and they had had vet care up until then. Mama and kittens stayed over six weeks, and mama got spayed, but had occasional misunderstandings with me (such as getting her claws caught in my socks by accident, ow-ow-ow for me) but over all, she was adoptable with cautions. Her kittens were great. They did try to gang up on my senior cat before getting to the shelter, but I think that was just cramped territory, misunderstandings, and self-protection. I got my senior kitty away without a serious problem. So a feral mama can be a risk, but can also be rewarding, and her kittens can be a joy for their new owners (and for you during fostering). Mama may warm up to you about her kittens, once she is feeling a little better, and sees you are their friend, trustworthy, a source of good things for them all. But yes, she may be hard to win over and she may have lingering trust issues. It depends on what she's had in her life before.

Pro tip: puppies start eliminating away from their main living area by 5 weeks old so it's a good time to encourage them to potty outside. Unlike cats, they respond strongly to verbal praise and approval as well as facial expressions so anytime they do something good, let them know! My puppies are 80-90% housebroken by 8 weeks because I never give them the chance to think going potty in the house is acceptable; I utilize their natural instinct to go as far away from their "den" as possible and allow them to venture outside and praise every "outside potty"

To me it is more a matter of whether a person finds evilness and insolence amusing. If you do, you will do well with cats and dogs, but if you do not, most cats will not be fun. I love cats and i find their snobbish wickedness and impertinence funny. Some people do not and thats fine. Oddly, goats and sheep are much the same. Goats are like cats. They want to make trouble and look for trouble, whereas sheep generally do not. So whenever a homesteader asks me "should i do goats or sheep" my first question is always "do you prefer cats or dogs?" It is pretty diagnostic!

  • @PhoenyxRysing

    @PhoenyxRysing

    3 жыл бұрын

@@rebeccaburrow7199 I may be biased, but I don't think that cats are inherently evil. Much like us, they can be a very wide range of things, and are shaped by their experiences--a family cat when I was a child would have probably been labeled 'evil' by some, due to a foul and unpredictable temper, but we suspected that trauma in her life (she spent her early years either stray or feral) was to blame for her bipolar personality. She was quite affectionate on her good days. In contrast, another family cat, now in his golden years, is and always has been the gentlest of souls, never provoking fights with the other cats (and intervening if he could), nor intentionally seeking mischief. Nor would he lash out, unless provoked--nipping a hand in warning if touched too roughly on places we suspected old injury was the furthest he'd go. Now insolence... That's perhaps a bit of a different story. They naturally seem to have an independent streak, and I've found that some can be quite clever--a combination of intelligence and boredom (and personality), and the energy of youth can certainly result in quite an attitude. Plus, it takes a little bit more convincing for a cat to change its ways--they don't naturally regard humans as their pack leaders the way a dog does, even if they do form hierarchies within the household. But I think a good comparison to having a younger cat is having a toddler--they simply want to see and do anything and everything. And, generally, they'll settle down with time.

My family wouldn't have our cat,Casper, without foster parents like you. According to his foster, she found him by himself on the side of the road at three weeks old in a box. He was two and a half months when we adopted him and when he was due for his second round of shots we took him to the vet and his foster was the vet administering the shots. She said that she was glad he found a good home because he was very cuddly. I can confirm that he is,in fact, very cuddly. His way of showing his affection is jumping up onto your lap and slamming his head in your face so you have no choice but to kiss him. Not to mention he likes jumping into our arms at random times. We love him very much and it's sad to think that without foster parents like Casper's or you,we wouldn't have found a cat that fits so well into our family.

The last time I rescued a kitten, I waited for several hours to see if it’s mother would come back for it. Mum for whatever reason was nowhere to be found 🤷‍♀️. Kitty was starting to cry in distress, so I did take her in and then a friend of mine got her some kitty formula. It was a terrible time for me to take in an abandoned kitten being two weeks before finals, but then mummy cat probably wasn’t planning on losing her kitty either🤷‍♀️. My friend decided to keep her, and I agreed to nurse the kitty until she could take the kitty home to her sisters. Her family still has the kitty btw. All grown up. And I managed to pass all of my classes that semester in spite of the two days of distraction I had caring for a little kitten. So worth it!

Agreed that a rescue dog is the best dog. That said, there can be good reasons for asking "what breed" aside from being fixated on adopting/promoting a specific breed. As a whole, dogs are much more diverse than cats (sure, there are 5 pound cats and 25 pound cats...but there are 5 pound dogs, and 150 pound dogs!) Knowing the breed/breeds of a dog can give some information about how big they'll get when fully grown, and their potential energy levels/needs. Knowing whether a puppy is a Newfie or a Greyhound can be the difference between whether someone can adequately provide for their needs or not. Of course, breed doesn't tell you everything - dogs are individuals in the end. But it can provide some good baseline information (: So while it can be frustrating to hear that question over and over (especially when many people DO put too much emphasis on having a dog that is a certain breed), it's also a question that is often shorthand for a whole bunch of other questions that are important.

@@franzi6289 I don't think so, mostly because when a person rehome a dog there's plenty of other reasons... (Not ready for being an owner or something that they can't really help like an accident) And well, the dog is their responsability, people could at least try to find a new owner for them. But I understand why you think like this, assuming you're from a country where breed culture is quite difunded. Knowing the breed will help the owner dealing with it's traits, like hunting, being active or breed related diseases, that's true, but some dogs are just so mixed that it doesn't say much about them anymore. They become just dogs & personality. And yeah, the way a person teach the dog also says a lot, If he doesn't see or play with strangers he might start being wary & defensive of their owner. Just to clarify, I don't think you're wrong, it's just that the main problem isn't the dog or it's breed but the person not being ready yet to deal with him :(

Reasons could be why it's interesting to know a breed (or the mix of breeds) of a rescue dog for example to kind of know the estimated size of the dog, the potential energy level and maybe a little bit of their behaviour. For example if there's a little bit of herding dog in the puppy, maybe they will have the need to herd so it could be important to know to be able to provide the opportunity, so that the dog would have their needs met. A cat's breed is not that important, because there's no real size difference or behaviour difference. But since humans have been breeding dogs for centuries and they have been bred for a specific work for the majority of this time (so humans bred dogs for behaviour as well as looks), and dogs are really easy to be bred very different from each other, every street puppy is a kinder surprise in a sense. I'm not really an expert on anything, this is just my thought process of why there would be so much more interest in the puppies' breed than a kitten's breed. Otherwise I agree - rescued is the best breed :)

You’re right. Many working dog breeds have been selectively breed to have certain traits. Like, corgis are high energy because they are herding dogs. And a high energy dog probably wouldn’t work for an elderly person. And in the US at least, most apartments have strict policies about dogs. For example no pit bulls, no dogs over 30 pounds. So, some people really do need to think about breeds when looking for dogs.

Rescue dogs ARE the best dogs. My dog was around 2 when I found her at the SPCA. She was super shy and timid, and was scared of men. I fell in love with her at first sight. She came home with me a month later (after getting spayed), and lived with me for another 12 years. She passed away last year, from seizures (I got her through 2 years of that too, instead of putting her down immediately). Found out after I had to have her put down (she had a brain tumor) that she had been scheduled to be put down 72 hours after I picked her out, so I gave her 12 years she wouldn't have had.

One of the things is that while kittens generally end up as 10 - 20 lb cats, puppies can end up as 10 - 100 lb dogs. That can have a significant impact on the long term success of rescue. I look back at the puppy I adopted when I was 22, who was supposed to be about 45lb and ended up at more than 90lb.I loved him and kept him his whole life despite the challenges, but talking to the family I got him from, it turned out Buster was the only puppy from the litter who spent his entire life with his adoptive family. It's important to make sure that people who adopt dogs understand the challenges and have appropriate support to deal with large dogs. That's why I feel like it is important for people to know the genetic background of puppies, so they don't make mistakes when they see cute puppies on KZread.

Nope Hannah, you're definitely not the only one who loves the smell of puppies! Puppy breath & puppy smell in general is very lovable. Funny how adult dogs really don't smell all that great though. But kittens & puppies are the best! Thank you for reaching out to give those little canine cuties the best possible start in life, even though their birth story is so tragic. You are an amazing foster mom for ANY species.💖🐈🐕🐇🐤💖

IKR! I feel like it happens with humans too lmao. People always say that newborn babies smell good.

I think it's hilarious that their bottle is bigger than they are! And those adorable yawns and tongues!

Our dog is a rescue who had been misused to breed for tourists and was later a foster mommy herself before she came to us. (she's fixed now) she got really interested at the sounds of those puppies.

These are so cute! You helped inspire me to be a foster. Right now I'm fostering a really sweet senior cat.
