Three out of five of these places are closed. Also, bbq is kinda a big deal in Charleston now. Shows how fast the food scene has changed in a few years.

iN 1975 Poogan's Porch was a store room house for the Mills Hyatt House Hotel. I was promoted to Purchasing Agent for the Hyatt. The house Poogan's Porch is located in was full of boxes and supplies for the hotel. We cleaned it out and reorganized everything on both floors. It had a desk and was my first office. Hot as hell because it had no a/c or heat. You have to start somewhere.

From what you had shown me - food service and ambience - I was pulling for Alluette Cafe. I n am happy for the owner, and I will be sure to try it on the next visit to Charleston, my favorite city.

And Honey, of course there are no superb BBQ restaurants in the city. You have to go out in the sticks to find a good joint. That's the point. You guys are pros with production but nimrods when it comes to research of subject. Not on of those places needs a million dollar suggestion. They all have the earning limitation that comes along with a paucity of parking.

Hey KZreadR, Charles Smith was dead on with his description. Even if he’s never been, a glance at that shrimp and grits rendition speaks volumes, as in, prepped for tourists, and there are several restaurants in Charleston that us locals see as flagrant affronts to tradition, be we begrudgingly understand that Hyman’s has to kiss some tourist ass to be the “success” that it was. As do many others. So fuck it. Like it, hate it, doesn’t matter to us, but a Chef Dan’s response to this critic, if it was authentic, was priceless. As in, we are known for being hospitable, but when you start to insinuate that you know better, you are, to use a beautiful colloquialism, fuckucked. I all but guarantee that the 150 year old recipe this Brit so proudly unearthed and challenged to be brought to life, had a couple of not-so-savory ingredients thrown in. Not something so sophomoric as expectorate, AKA spit, but maybe more life giving than that. Don’t fuck with Charleston. We’ll charm you right into a southern necktie. The Italians stole our vengeful fashion sense. And for that, HAVE YOU BEEN TO POOGAN’S PORCH? If not, comment not, if you have, you too are a sucker. Welcome to Charleston.

Eric Montiel wow didn’t notice at first. It’s up to 19k now but still, the question now is, how can his review be worth $1,000,000 with 0.0058% of the US population at least clicking on this? Does not compute. The Million Dollar in the title must be hyperbole. Let my main man Giles hang out in Charleston for 1-3 months and it will either chew him up and spit him out, or convert him into “The Charleston Way”. Yeah I fuckin coined that term. Don’t goddamned mind if I do. Chucktown hospitality is equaled only by it’s disdain for naysayers, unless of course their opinion happens to agree with ours. I mean, there is really only one truth, ennit? Tourist trap restaurants. Eh, they keep the tourists out of our local faves at just the right times such that the Real Deal joints can flourish whilst not selling their souls to the uncouth. Yeah. Fuckin uncouth. When chef Dan at Poogan’s suggested the host order something already on the menu, I laughed out loud, like maybe wake the neighbors kind of cracking up. That dude is either from Charleston or Jersey. Without knowing his background, and not a hint of Jersey moron mouth, gotta be Chucktown. How can you address a potentially business altering critic with enough disdain to stop the whole of England and make them say in unison, “pardon me, but if I’m being honest I would wager me mum’s undergarments that you suggested I stick with what’s already on the menu.”? Simple, live in Charleston long enough and you’ll realize that it doesn’t matter if you kiss any ass, it won’t get you anywhere, but when you stand your ground with conviction, THAT will get you EVERYWHERE. Come on down.
