Reviewing the Restaurants of Providence, RI - Million Dollar Critic with Giles Coren

Founded in 1636, Providence embodies a uniquely independent spirit. It's also noted for a restaurant scene so strong, it's leading the city out of recession. How can that be? Giles is here to find out if Providence’s food is really that good.

That restaurant was fit for Tony Soprano & the gang. One of my favourite videos is the food from the Sopranos video on KZread & this place would fit in right along with Artie’s.

Here in RI we got lots of great restaurants so I understand that it's hard to narrow down the choices, but no disrespect to the assistant, I would have done better research. All great restaurants in this video but I felt RI could have been represented better. She just doesn't know enough about us to have the critic represent us. And we aren't that big on the snails/squid here. I mean, calamari, (which is fried squid), IS our state dish but that is the extent of it and he didn't even get that. And he might have preferred the fried Calamari since he didn't seem to enjoy regular squid. We are more about stuffies, NY Olneyville system wieners, Del's frozen lemonade, clam chowder. And I wanted to see him try our state drink, coffee milk. He might've liked that!

Is it restaurants in Providence you’re speaking of? Like, do you live inside Providence? Because he wasn’t reviewing your state. He was only reviewing those specific areas in Providence where I saw a lot of sea snail dishes and various shellfish options, I would’ve assumed it was a big seafood town anyway being a tourist. Also, it isn’t him reviewing the best restaurants either. It isn’t about him reviewing the best representation of Providence food even. It’s a show about showing the best of a few restaurants who desperately wanted his help, and they all have to be different from each other and struggling in some aspect. I’m assuming out of the research she did all of the restaurants you’re mentioning didn’t reach out for the help, didn’t need the publicity. Didn’t want the publicity. Already had the exposure and clientele base they wanted etc. Maybe didn’t even know who Giles Coren was. I don’t mean to be rude about that either. I’ve just seen a lot of comments on the other episodes like: “I live here and they’re crazy to focus on these places when we have so much better to offer.” Yeah, that’s the point of the show haha. It’s restaurants that are struggling and need exposure from Giles. It would be like Gordon Ramsay coming over to do Kitchen Nightmares & people saying for example, why have they shown a bunch of amateur chefs in this when we have so many hugely successful, better representations of culinary artists and restaurants in our country? Because that’s the whole premise - for them to be amateurs. Also - I love the twin river casino and I miss it so much. All that smoke, old ladies with oxygen tanks, random women with hula hoops. For a Scottish tourist you guys can really party. And I totally agree that your seafood is amazing. I live on an island and your fish is the softest, flakiest, tastiest fish I’ve ever had in my entire life, the biggest shellfish I’ve ever seen in my life. Absolutely perfect.

@@SophieJackson1993 I am a native Rhode Islander, born, raised and still always around in Providence. Been here many, many years. If there is anything you'd ever want to know about RI you've only to ask me or my immediate family. We've been here for all our lives..and its a small state (like we are only 50 minutes from one end to the other) so you're pretty much always in the shadow of providence. I get your point about them reviewing the struggling places but mostly these places shown here are not struggling. Los Andes does killer business on chalkstone ave. Old canteen is an old established restaurant on federal hill..etc. Most of these places are high end, doing well (of course with the present covid thing maybe they aren't I think they are on takeout or whatever etc but who knows), but they were already doing well and successful. The thing is, when you're a local you just judge more because you actually are FROM the place and you know better. I'm not saying they did a bad job overall its just very obvious they aren't from here at all and don't really know the scene much. We just aren't known much for peruvian and I don't know how popular snails? Are. We are known more for Del's frozen lemonade, stuffies, clamcakes chowder hot olneyville wieners etc. That's just more who we are if you're going full RI. But yeah oh no disrespect to them at all They did their best I enjoyed it. And yes glad you had fun here. We do have great seafood and twin river casino in lincoln is fun if you don't mind the smoke. Next time you're here go to Newport, or head 45 minutes north to Boston, Massachusetts or go 3 hours south to new York city :)

I completely agree, and I think while this video showed popular restaurants, it defiantly showed no where near the amount, at least what I feel is, actual Rhody Cuisine. Obviously I am aware he is only showing Providence RI, but even what was chosen wasn't a great choice. I've always felt that Nicks is a much more modern, and doesn't have nearly any "traditional" Rhode Island foods. I love Nicks, and maybe I haven't studied the menu well enough. Personally I've never once heard of north, and I felt like they hyped it up to be some major thing, but I guess 17 years of living here what do I know. I agree that Old Canteen should 100% be on the list however. It does represent the enormous amounts of Italian restaurants we have here, and how deeply rooted in tradition they are. Los Andes I think I agree with being on the list. Again, I don't think he found the "Rhode Island cuisine" and more federal hill cuisine, and I feel like often the two can be very detached.

I've lived in Rhode Island my entire life and I've never once heard it called THE regional dish around here. It's almost like saying that Rhode Island clam chowder is something that everyone likes around here (We don't.) I'd be more inclined to say stuffies or little necks are more our regional dishes that would insult us if outsiders didn't like them

A little late in viewing and was disappointed. Giles was not given a fair group of restaurants to review. There are so many other wonderful places to eat in Providence. Sad that the Old Canteen didn't win - perfection on food and service and old time ambiance. The Dorrance building was beautiful. And best thing is that a Rhode Islander was kind enough to share food with a stranger. Otherwise, Nick's on Broadway chef was disappointing. He couldn't follow a simple request for a simple omelet. I don't want any one pushing food I didn't ask for ...
