Replacing Plastic Follower With Stainless Steel vs Follower - Rossi Lever Action Rifles

Many rifles come with Plastic parts, most work fine. A follower always under spring pressure and tension is more like chip, crack or fail. Replacing it with metal will last for the life of the gun. Pretty inexpensive upgrade. Most higher end guns will use metal followers, I am pretty sure this is a save money decision. NOTE: MY TWITTER IS @Horsyguy

I hacked a technique to replace plastic parts with aluminum alloys by chucking the plastic part in a sand+waterglass mold, burning out the plastic and pouring in metal melted in a small stainless container using a torch... requires a bit of cleanup with a dremel after, but beats 3d printed plastic. Save your can tabs; they work great for small parts and the alloying metals only cost a cent.

Love your approach. "Is it necessary"? "Will it fail?" "I dont know". But you want to do it anyway without shaming anyone or put them on blast. Good deal and beautiful rifle

Well done! I recommend decaf☕️ before attempting this 😁 Lever rifles can seem intimidating at first but become second nature with practice. Just a little practice that become an extension of your hand, both when shooting and also when cleaning. Excellent tutorial, Rick 👍

I just have a question or those followers a known failure point in that rifle I'm just wondering if it's a known problem or are you just thinking that it could be because the plastic follower would be less prone to galling and seizing in the magazine tube metal on metal always creates a friction and gouging possibility plastic has more lubricity just wondered what kind of plastic it's made of modern Plastics can be very tough and resistant to failure but it's your gun you do you

I like the green for showing clear, but when you market stainless as more reliable, I think that is more important. When you need the gun to work it may be now, when you need to empty it and be sure, you probably have time.

There was a gun channel that did tests if bullets in the tube can slam fire each other, they did slow motion video of brass exploding in clear plastic tubes. They can go boom, but if it does, it seems not that deadly, as it sounds. A mag tube is not a tight rifled barrel, so the pressure should not be able to propel a projectile to a deadly penetrating velocity. Maybe they want the follower to crack first, in case the gun is dropped, so management would make the marketing argument the plastic is used for safety not for savings. I don't think they are right, Rick’s stainless follower will sure last forever.

I own a couple Rossi 92's..1 in .44 mag, the other in .357 mag ..that plastic as far as I know has never been documented highly to fail often I just have not experienced that failure, plastic lasts a long time, people jamming that "just one more round" in that feed tube probable cause. I'd bet..mine the plastic ones work great if or when they were to not work or break well I'll flip an empty brass shell backwards in the feed tube push the spring back in and save 20 bucks...Glocks are regarded highly and they are ..... (drum roll) polymer plastic...Regards ...D.

Very first mod I did on my saddle ring 16". I also replaced the tube spring with a SS one. One tip I learned by almost messing up the plug screw, is the mag tube plug has two open ends and only one side is threaded. I found that out wondering why my damn screw wasn't catching threads. 😆

I think the reason they used plastic is because they didn't want metal shavings in the riffle from steel or brass follower against steel .

They use plastic because it's cheaper. Solvents will end up softening it and or swelling it making the rifle unreliable. Ask me how I know ;-)

Was wondering if my 500 round Rossi is experiencing this issue. I lubed it and there is failure to feed from the tube at about 6/10 rounds… light tap slides the bullet into the action. My guess is Either feeding spring is weak or follower is jamming… barrel did get pretty hot the few times I’ve shot it

At first glance, I totally understand what you're saying, but with some deeper thought, believe it or not, there's sometimes a reason behind using plastic these days and a lot of them are actually more beneficial and extremely tough durable, long lasting. Remington is a very credible and trustworthy company so I doubt the reason they chose plastic would be for screwing over their costumers, but then again it is 2023 and everything these days is built to break or need replacing so personally I'm on the fence on this subject and I don't have a strong opinion either way just figured I'd share some insight and give my opinion🫡
