Replacing another Winnebago Wind Damaged Roof 2004 Sightseer

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I held off on running this roof video until I heard back from the owner. Though his insurance had approved the work, halfway through the process they decided not to cover it and called it "owner neglect." After many letters and phone calls from both the owner and my company, they ultimately did cover the repair, mainly because I could show how the roof had been maintained and there was no owner neglect. Luckily, I had been taking video and photos during the process :)~
So the moral is to check and seal your Winnebago roofs annually!!!!
Here is a highly edited video of the Winnebago roof replacement process including the strange events and happenings we found while ripping this roof off. Thanks!!

    Winnebagos in this year-ish time frame had a foam seal on the glass that rotted and took on moisture - long periods of the wet foam on the steel window frame rotts all of them out. Usually presents itself as black dust on the dash that smears and rust that cracks the corners of the windshield. -Repair is rv shop removes fascia -A window tech tech removes windshield and likely cracks one or both windshields in removal. -RV shop grinds the heck out of frame and welds new structure if needed then paints frame with some rust inhibiting paint. -Window tech installs & possibly replaces windshields if one broke earlier. -rv shop reinstalls fascia 1,500 to 3500 $ depending on structure and window removal luck. This imo is the only major flaw with this year range of winnebago if maintained well.

    I do not. It would be very similar, the foam would have to be fabricated, but I think if it were me, I would likely just switch to a TPO or PVC roof as the deck is very thick on those roofs and fabricating metal radius would be easier than foam.

    On the National there appears to be no removable end caps, is that right? To replace the roof material it looks like I just remove the trim at the caps and remove the horizontal gutter trim. Is that why you think it would be easier to put down TPO or PVC? AND thanks for the link to the Sea Breeze video. Thanks so so much for your time and input.

  • @AZExpert

    @AZExpert

    Mostly cost when it comes to membranes, most buyers aren't interested and a membrane is a membrane. On this style roof, I think Winnebago could be shamed by customers into demanding thicker decking as National and Country Coach did 1/2" plywood on their filon roofs. But mostly, the buyers speak with their wallet.

    I have watched several of your videos, and I am here because our 1990 Fleetwood Prowler is experiencing some leaks. Obviously, your pet peeve is to make sure you find the leaks and fix them first. Since I have a 1990 Fleetwood Prowler, I am looking at the possibility of finding and sealing the leaks, but also using some Heng's roof coating to cover the roof to not only add life, but make it look better. What is your opinion on this?

  • @AZExpert

    @AZExpert

    4 жыл бұрын

    I am absolutely fine with adding coatings to look better and give additional protection. I am always more concerned that it is used as any easy fix for leaks rather than finding and repairing the leak first. Ultimately, I just try to let people know coatings aren't magic and age and peel too and that roofs need constant inspections. Thanks and good luck!

    The majority of Norcold recalls only really apply to the 1200 series which is a 4-door model. If it had a recall performed there will be a temperature sensor installed in the insulation around the heating element and a small 3 x 3 box clipped to the cooling unit at the back. Dometics just have a thermodisc and thermal fuse mounted at the burner area. But no recall will give you a new refrigerator or cooling unit. Thanks!

    Another great video. You do roofs literally single handed. The other hand is holding the camera ;-) That rust above the windshield is distressing to see. Powder coated steel shouldn't rust unless it is getting wet. Where is the water coming in to rust that windshield frame so badly. How can you detect and prevent such a leak.

  • @AZExpert

    @AZExpert

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you very much! Not doubt the rust troubled me too. I have two thoughts about this: #1 It has been stored in Longbeach, CA for over a decade and ocean air does this, #2 I have not found "powdercoating" the silver buller many claim it to be. Most RV steps are powdercoated and even newer ones have painted sections pull off easily. Winnebago front caps are just like the automotive industry with the windshield glued to the metal frame. The rubber seal on top is merely comestic and water and air get past it easily. The only way to prevent this is sadly have the windshield removed and the metal treated at the time. Chances are these were fairly old or original windshields as the urethane was still stuck to the paint, the paint just came loose from the metal. Thanks!

    The shop is in Mesa, AZ. In general I am not a fan of roof coatings for much more than extending the life of the roof(ie not for weatherproofing or repairing tears). Done correctly a roof should last 15+ years. The roll on coatings can hide problems that may not turn up until it's a big problem, or peel off and the time and money spent was wasted. Thanks!
