The MOST Important Inspection on a Winnebago Roof

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A few years ago I replaced the roof on a 2004 Sunova. That owner just purchased a 2016 Winnebago Vista and wants to make sure that won't happen again. He asked me to inspect the roof on the Vista. Here is the inspection and repairs.

This is no joke. Cars were honking their horns and flashing their lights. I pulled over and somebody said, "your awning is falling apart and flying all over the road"! I climbed on the roof and the roof radius was out of the flashing. All of the Styrofoam backing had come out and that is what was flying all over the road. I had to re-order from Winnebago Parts @ $5.40 per 4' section. I ordered the products you prescribed and re-sealed the edges. My unit is a 2003 and clearly had NEVER been re-sealed as 100% of the sealer was gone. No Mineral Spirits required, just cleaned with alcohol. No scraping at all. I dodged a bullet on this one and in doing so found the source of a leak near the passenger seat. This week's job is the self-leveling sealer that you used.

Thank you, you really saved me a roof on my 2006 sightseer. I got back from a short trip and the roof was peeled out about 8 ft. On right side. No damage to the material. I resigned myself to having the roof replaced. And then I found your video. I done the reseal and have 6000 miles on it, no problem. I just bought it used overall in fantastic condition only 36000 miles. No water damage anywhere so I never checked the roof closely. Thank you for your advice.

You just saved us. 2006Journey 36SE or SG the sticker is different. I am so happy I found your channel. You have helped me tremendously. I've always owned a seasonal spot in Port Clinton on Lake Erie. 2 years ago, I sold my boat and the park model and purchased this Winnebago. after seeing this video, I checked my roof and yep, the radiuses on both sides need to be resealed. also, the shower skylight is cracked and rotted some wood. all my vinyl is separating from the ceiling. I'm just vacuuming the foam down and gluing it to the wood It's been fun. It doesn't look to bad, I guess. There is not a heck of a lot of research on that one. I think this will get us by. we loved that Tiffin you just shot a few weeks that's for sale. Thanks again I will forever watch your channel.

Thanks to this video I tackled the roof job over the last two days. I had this planned for the winter and had already purchased the Manus product to use. After seeing this, I went out and bought ProFlex. While the caulk on the coach(2014 Vista 35B) had not turned to powder, It looked like it might be starting. The job was not easy, taking the time to clean and get all the old stuff off was the toughest part. Oh, and climbing up and down the ladder. Wish I had kept a count on the number of times. One thing I think maybe needs to done in conjunction with this job is to paint the inside of the gutter. While mine are not rusted, they look like it could start. I would think this would be an easy and quick job using brush on paint and a foam brush. I keep my rig indoors, so I feel if you store outdoors this would be even more important.

Thank you for your very detailed approach at resolving this issue. I just bought a 2016 Winnebago/Itasca Sunstar 30T. During the prepurchase, I found about an 8' section of the roof radius to gutter seal not adhering. I had an idea how to approach this, but you made it much better to understand with your instructions. Now the work begins - lol! (FWIW, I used the repair as a negotiation point to lower the price. I should have allowed for more $$$, but I am OK with the deal as I bought it knowing the issue)

James’ videos are great for RV’ers like myself who recently purchased a ‘17 Winnebago Vista. I wouldn’t have bought it if I wasn’t confident in doing 95% of repairs myself. This channel really makes that happen. Sure enough my radius sealants needed attention. I completed this job myself solely because of his guidance. It’s reassuring knowing how these work and being able to address issues that pop up. Thank you sir!

After watching this video I inspected my roof and sure enough the seals were bad. I used my multitool to clean the channel. You must use great care as the multitool would eat the fabric roof in a heartbeat. It was very fast and efficient allowing me to clean the channel with little effort. I found that if I used a cap from the Heng product to run down the channel after the first application, the Proflex would sink into the channel and fill it letting me apply a second coat and be done with it. Thanks so much for the great video.

Great refresher James. Appreciate it. Was looking at a beautiful Winnebago Tour DP at a local dealer for possible purchase and utilized the inspection process shared in your videos. I found the exact problem shared here, including the roof spider-cracking at the corner from an unknown overhead strike. When I shared these anomalies with the sales rep, he had no idea of the installation process Winnebago uses. I explained the issues as well as the solutions, stating whoever buys the coach ought to have full-disclosure if their shop chooses not to do so pre-sale. The coach sold about a week later, so I am thinking they chose not to address the problems. Won't be going back there to buy a coach

Thank you for your service for those who are unable to get up there. It seems that seal will lead not to roof problems because it allows water down below the roof line. You might still have an ok roof but walls rotted out. Amazing that they tuck it in and seal. This means that overlapping the exterior wall and fastening is either too expensive is too expensive to replace if ever needed, or both. The tucked roof, despite the required perfect seal, may allow for easier replacement due to other damage that is common.

I just did this on the 2015 Brave I bought. I bought it aight unseen in Arizona, flew out and drove it 2200 miles home to Buffalo. The Manus Bond did turn to powder, but someone tried to fix it by using cheap white silicone. If it was just manus bond I would have had the transition cleaned out and re sealed in less than an hour (I’m an RV tech as well) but it took me nearly 3 hours to clean out all the silicone and re seal it. I debated using pro flex which I use on just about everything, but went with the Manus Bond for this application, it’s easier to remove in a few years when I have to do it again, and I would if I used pro flex too. As it tends to crack.

Howdy my Wife and I own a 2015 40’ ForeTravel Nimbus and it’s been a very good coach so far. Are there areas that stand out such as the roof or other areas on its exterior I need to keep an eye on? I have it checked quite often by an RV service center but I doubt they your have your expertise and we don’t need any surprises until it’s to late and I respect your opinions. I have watched you for quite sometime now and I am very impressed with the preventive measures you take towards prolonging the life of RV’s regardless of type or dollar value. Yes my wife and I own an fairly expensive RV but we sold our boat to get the money to purchase it so we try to give it the same treatment we would our boat that we had. Boats as you know are very expensive to operate and maintain ours was a 2014 52 ‘ Hatteress that with age and ours it just became to costly to maintain and time consuming after years of owning it. At our ages of 73 we can’t afford to overlook issues that you might have knowledge of and in my opinion your knowledge and experience is priceless. If your not able to respond I understand after all I realize your very busy. Thank You

Great video. Can I ask you with this interlocking system does the roof have metal joist or anything running from passenger wall to driver wall? I ask so I can mount solar panels or mount something to ceiling from inside for support.

I dug all of the crap out on ours. Silicone was most of what someone used. I bought the stuff Winnebago used. I put the tip of the caulk down in and filled it up

My radius has come out on both sides of 2001 Brave. I think the roof shrunk? There is literally no existing sealant to remove... but it will make the job easier. Thanks for showing us how to do this.

My 2001 Winnebago Brave 35C has roofing pulling out at the roll at extrusion rail. Can I clean gunk out and spray adhesive all the way down and reattach?? Insurance won't cover older rv's here in Arizona!! I'm not afraid of the work involved. Wish I would have found you before I bought this rig!! Excellent video's!!!

Thanks James, my new to me 2011 Via was stored in the Phoenix sun by the PO and when I checked the roof today sure enough the seal has failed in numerous locations. 2 Q's if you don't mind, about how long between the 1st application and the cap bead, minutes? hours? a day? and 2. Before applying the cap bead I noticed you used the cleaner again, do you wipe it off before applying the cap? Thanks, Brian in Tucson

Jim I enjoyed the explanation of this issue. I just bought an 06 adventurer 35A now I know how to do this job with confidence. I'm curious why on the cap where you put the self leveling cauk I didn't see any on the radius it goes down on the curve. Is that gonna be OK and it won't leak? Just leave it dry? Ty again for your professionalism and making these videos. I liked and subscribed 😎

I thoroughly cleaned and resealed using pro flex clear. I allowed 5 days for it to cure. First time I drove my rV the drivers side radius came out of the channel about 3ft in length. What could be the reason/s its not holding? Why do you think the radius is not staying down? :(

Just bought a used new to us 2015 Winnebago Brave 27B in excellent condition. After a long drive we made it to California. For the first time I noticed a small puddle of water on the dash. It was dripping down from the ceiling/front compartment area about an inch from the windshield. There was no rain at all. Note we have been through a couple of heavy rains and no leaks. When I looked on the roof after noticing the puddle there was a little puddle against the front cap seal where the AC appeared to drained to. Im thinking after a very bumpy 4 day cross country trip maybe the seal was compromised. Does this sound right to you? Is there anywhere else I should suspect? The side seals need to be resealed but the roof looks good otherwise. Really enjoy your channel.

Dear AZ Experts, I am the proud new owner of a 2005 Winnebago Journey 32T and I followed your advice and instruction on inspecting and maintaining the radius seal. It came out beautifully! But here's what I have other concerns. During my inspection I also noticed some stress cracks on or along the radius. My question is, How do I go about taking care of that? I've been doing some research and I've seen some folks use Flex Seal or Dicore Signature (silicone based) to basically paint their roofs. Is this process something you would recommend? And what product is best to tackle this issue? I appreciate any and all the help I can get! Sincerely, Nick

I have a question. In your video, you said don't use silicone on a Winnebago roof. Yet you used the self leveling silicone on the cap. Am I missing something? Or were you referring to, don't use silicone in the side channels? Love your videos by the way!

  • @parkercampbell2899

When in the store you mention the heng's/311 self-leveling sealant, which is silicone based and you say to use for winnebago's or tiffins , then you talk about the proflex and indicate that it is not silcone based, and finally say not to use silicone on the roof because it will not stick. Can you clarify this? Great video, thanks for the info!

I’m thinking you speaking about a roof endorsement added onto the RV policy? Good idea. I scraped out the old Winnie radius sealant and used Henry Co 884 100% silicon roof sealant from HD. Seems good, after watching one of your earlier shows. Keeping a eye on it. They have a clear not sure the #.
