Good video. I change my deck belt with the deck still on and without removing any of the pins. It's a little tricky but easier than disassembling everything to put on a belt

Thanks for posting this video Dennis. I have the same tractor and was pleased that you confirmed at the beginning that it is possible to change the deck belt without having to remove the deck. I found that after I took off the two outer protective covers, and lowered the deck to the lowest setting, there was plenty of room to easily thread the new belt (the old one snapped, so was already off). I didn't need to remove or loosen anything else. I raised the deck all the way up to pull the belt over the engine pulley. Really appreciate your video, as I've lost my original manual after moving house. Cheers, Cliff

Thanks for these videos, Dennis. You really do a great service for so many of us. When my local small-engine repair guy has a 4-week backlog of work, it's nice to be able to work on my tractor and get it running before I have a hayfield for a lawn. I replaced my deck belt (same Husq. tractor) and I wanted to check it to see if it was working, so I engaged the PTO (with the engine off) and manually turned the blades and pulleys, but the belt stays in place and will not move the other spindle pulley, etc. Before I replaced the belt with the new one, I had cleaned around the spindles, so nothing appears to be blocked, and the belt is not super-loose once it's engaged, but my first guess is that it may just need to be tightened. The original belt came off the tractor a couple weeks ago when I was cutting some thick clover in my back yard. I could smell it rubbing/burning a little when I got into the thicker stuff, but it wasn't wet and the clover didn't look like anything the mower couldn't handle. After a little while of doing that intermittently, the belt just came off. It was a little frayed, but didn't break. I wonder if there is a problem with the spindles being stuck, but I don't see anything above or below the deck. Do you have any thoughts about this? Thank you so much for all you do!

Hi Michael, thanks for watching! With the PTO engaged and the engine off, the deck belt should be relatively tight. If it is tight on the engine pulley, it won't turn easily. The engine pulley will keep it from turning freely. So, if the belt is fairly tight, you can turn one blade by making it slip on the belt....the engine pulley will keep the belt from turning so the other blade will not turn. Disengaged, both should turn easily by hand. If both turn easily by hand with the PTO engaged, but do not turn each other, your belt may be too loose.

Afer watching several videos on changing deck belt, this is, by far, the best of all!

I forgot to say, you have done one of the best videos I have ever watched on You Tube. You explain thoroughly and in detail, and with a steady camera. I thought it would be an big job, but you makes it easy. My first mistake was trying to take the guide bolts off while the deck was still attached. I broke the head off the third bolt, and couldn't get to the 4th bolt. Maybe I can get the last bolt off easier with the deck off, and this time use penetrating oil, or heat vs. an extension on my socket wrench. Thanks for that needed video.

Thank you so much Reuben! I'm working on a video showing how to replace the spindles on the mower deck. I broke off 2 bolts on the process, so don't feel bad :) It is much easier to get to the bolts with the deck off the tractor though....so removing it should make that process easier for you.

Yeh, but I broke (2) bolts on the getting off the second belt retainer, after getting the first retainer off with no problem. But on my first comment, old original factory drive belt 104", all vendors replacement drive belts 105.8" (WILL IDLER PULLEY TIGHTEN UP ON THE EXTRA 1.8")

This video (and the deck removal video) was very helpful. Saved me a bunch of time and money. Used the steps for my Husqvarna YTA24V48 after the deck belt snapped in two.

@@dwcoffey Something I'd mention: I think mine snapped because I hadn't cleaned out the debris underneath the belt guards (ever) and it must have put enormous strain on the belt over time.

I inadvertently hit a pretty solid mound of dirt....belt was already worn, so the sudden shock did it in. :) It's the first of the season, so a new belt will be a good thing anyway. haha

Thank you so much.. especially for the much needed comment that this can be done without removing deck from mower...I did find it helpful to lower deck as far as it could go, and also, with deck on mower, I did find it necessary to have a deeper 1/2" socket for the pin bolts on the chute side of mower, couldn't have worked without that... your video was great!

Hi Jeff, This video on changing the deck belt as well as the how the drop the deck have been amazing! My husband passed away 3 years ago and I am now learning all this stuff for the first time so THANK YOU!! Now for the quirky girl question, lol. Which side of the belt should be facing the spindle pulley. Flat side in or out as it relates to the side that actually touches the pulley? Apparently it's not really a girl question because the 2 guys at the hardware store argued amongst them selves when I asked and I never did get a straight answer! Thanks again for helping this 40 something lady figure this out and save a little money by doing it myself!

Hi Jennifer.....no worries and that is a very good question. Getting the belt on the right way will make sure your mower works correctly and the belt doesn't prematurely wear out. The tapered side of the belt will go into all the pulleys, including the spindle pulleys except one. One of the idler/tension pulleys on the deck is flat, rather than tapered on it's inside surface (where the belt runs). The back (flat side) of the belt will run against that pulley. great, very helpful. I took your advice and changed the belt while leaving the mower deck on. One question, Before I took the old belt off, I did not notice the "guides" near the engine spindle drive. I put my new belt inside of them because it seemed logical and the belt fit easily. They are unique guides that are made of thick gauge heavy wire and coated. I just wanted to check that this is correct before I run it to cut the entire yard. Thanks for your videos. they are easy to follow and quite helpful.

Thanks for watching, Jim! Yes, the deck belt should run through the J-shaped part of that guide on each side of the engine pulley. On mine, the guides are J-shaped with the long leg nearest the pulley and short leg farthest from the pulley. The belt should go 'inside' the J-shape. Let me know if that doesn't make sense. :)

Dennis I broke off a bolt from one of the guards to be able to remove the belt...what do I do to get the remaining lodged portion of the bolt out and how do I prevent the two remaining bolts from doing the same thing? I had the same problem...fortunately I was also changing out the spindles (video coming soon). If you remove the other bolts, the spindle will come out the bottom, then you can work on removing the bolt on your workbench, if you prefer. If you don't want to remove the other bolts, you should be able to do this while the spindle is still attached to the deck. You'll need to buy a screw/bolt extractor, something like this: www.amazon.com/SIENOC-Construction-Extractor-Damaged-Stripped/dp/B06XDKY8ZK/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1506446319&sr=8-10&keywords=easy+out+bolt+extractor+set You can find them at your local home improvement store or hardware store. Generally, you will drill a hole into the broken bolt, insert the appropriate size extractor and turn counterclockwise. The extractors are left-hand thread so they will bite into the broken bolt and back it out. The other alternative would be to drill the whole thing out and replace with a nut and bolt combination. This is least preferable though, because if the nut ever comes loose, it will be launched by your turning mover blades. If you choose to do it this way, use an aircraft nut, locktite, or drill and pin the nut end of the bolt. These bolts go through the deck and thread into the spindles. Once all bolts are removed (or broken) the spindle will come right out. I broke off a couple of bolts the first time I tried to remove them and ended up replacing the spindles. They are not terribly expensive and come with new bolts, so this may also be an easier alternative. These are the spindles I purchased.

Haven't worked through imperial socket sizes, but 16 mm seems to be what you need for for the majority of any heavy connections.

Thanks for watching, Bill! I've had that happen if I don't ease the PTO off....for example, if I flip the belt engage off quickly, without holding it and going a bit slow, the belt will pop off. If this is not the case with yours, check to be sure the belt is inside the guides on each side of the drive pulley under the engine.

Hey Dennis, Thanks for doing these videos. I used this one and the one on how to remove the deck from the mower. Both were easy to understand (for those of us that are definitely not mechanics) and detailed enough to get the job done. I do have a question. The belt keeps popping off. I know I have it inside all the guides etc and even on the inside of the J-shaped hook on the front pulley. Any ideas? Is there a part I can get for added support or something. Is there a way to tighten the belt? Open to any suggestions. Thanks again.. ED

Thanks for watching, Ed! If the belt is routed properly and all guards/guides are in place, I'd check to be sure the belt is correct..part number should be 584453101. Any slight increase in the overall length of the belt can cause this problem. Next, check to be sure the belt is running 'right side out', in other words, be sure the tapered side is running in the tapered pulleys and the flat side is running against the flat pulley. If the belt is coming off while disengaging the blades, I've found that if I disengage the blades slowly (and don't flip the PTO lever up), the belt doesn't slip off. If it is coming off while the blades are engaged, I have a video showing how to adjust the belt: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Yqh2lKaSpLXOeZs.html Let me know if none of that helps and we'll try to figure it out together.

After replacing the belt as shown on your video (but without removing the deck), the belt does not have enough slack to be looped over the engine pulley. Any suggestion on the final step of getting the belt on? Thanks.

Hi Darren, thanks for watching! You could try raising the deck all the way up...that won't give you much slack, but maybe just enough. Other than making sure you have the belt inside of all the guides/guards, there not much else to do for slack. Is there a possibility your belt is too short?

Dennis....any idea if there's an adjustment tolerance on the linkage brake (part #64). I had a rattle when engaging the mower, and found this thing to be rattling. One end is stationary, and the other has a nut (which can be adjusted in or out).

Hey Rick, thanks for watching! Where the deck belt goes around the engine pulley, there are two wire guards/keepers that the deck belt goes into. The long leg of each keeper is attached to the underside of the tractor and the short legs are free. Short legs are toward the outside, on each side of the tractor. The deck belt sits in the keeper between the long leg and the short leg, so basically, you just flip it inside of the short leg. Let me know if that isn't a good explanation and I'll try to help. Hey Dylan....you probably have a loose belt. When the deck belt is too loose, it will delay the blades coming up to speed. Try this: turn mower off, engage the blade lever and check the belt tension on top of the deck. If you can slide the belt through the pulleys with one hand, it is too loose and should be replaced.

Yes, it's OK if it has a little play in the belt, but in the 'engaged' position and not running, you should not be able to move the belt longitudinally without making the blades turn. In other words, if you turn the belt, the blades should turn equally and not slip. You may want to disengage the blades and check the blades for excess play in the spindles. The spindles could be worn and binding a bit causing the delay in coming up to speed. The only other thing I can think of is to check under the deck and make sure it is caked up with dried clippings...that could slow the blades down too.

Dennis, this is the first tractor I've owned, and the deck belt broke. Nothing seems to be stopping the pulleys from turning freely. I have about 18 hours on it, and was just wondering if anyone else has broken a belt that soon.

Hi Michael, thanks for watching. I haven't heard of a belt breaking that early...it makes me suspect you had a defective belt. The only time I've broken a deck belt was when I snagged on of the blades on a small stump. My belt already had a worn spot and the impact of the snag just popped the belt.

Michael O'Pry Mine broke around 40 hours but something got snagged in it I believe.

I found a loose and broken tension spring (at least that’s what I think it is) when I was cleaning the mower deck. Is it simple to replace? Can you offer guidance. Thank you.

If you have both halves of the spring, most good hardware stores will have a spring selection and might be able to match it. If you have the manual for your mower, you can sometimes find the part numbers in the manual, look the correct spring upon the internet and find a replacement. A great resource, if you don't have a manual, is Jacks Small Engines. They have parts diagrams for most models. Thank you for watching, Susan!

Thank you, Dennis. We've replace the deck belt on our Husqvarna YTA22V46 22-HP V-twin Automatic 46-in lawn tractor, a couple of times. Yet, we have a problem with the belt slipping off the deck pulleys and even drive shaft pulley, several times during a mowing. We've checked other videos and made sure our brake is clean an freely operating and the sway brackets are intact, and made sure we have the right belt. Yet, even though we stop and engage or disengage the mower blades very slowly, we still have a problem with the belt slipping off one or more pulley. I wonder if you've run into this and if you could help us troubleshoot the problem. Thank you.

Hi Gary, thank you for watching! I have not had this problem, but will try to offer a few suggestions. You may have already done all of these, but just my thoughts on how I'd approach it. The belt you should have is: 584453101, same as my YTH22V46...there's a link in the video description. You should have a spring steel retainer on each of the spindle pulleys to keep the belt from coming off of them when slack (disengaged). Make sure your belt is running between those retainers and the pulleys. Also, double check your belt routing.....there is one flat pulley on the deck, the back of the belt (flat side) should be running against the flat pulley, the tapered side of the belt should be running in all the other pulleys. It is possible to get the belt on 'inside out' where the flat side is running inside all the tapered pulleys. Finally, be sure the belt is running inside the belt guard on each side of the drive pulley (under the engine). We've been stopping and putting the belt on several times when we mow, so it will be great finally figuring this out. The two springs on the tensioner do tighten the belt enough to turn the blades for mowing. When we release the tensioner, however, the blades sometimes keep spinning and then seem to spin the belt off the pulleys and either over or under the retainers and clips. This is one problem we're having. Then, on other occasions, the belt just slips off one or more of the pulleys and even off the drive shaft while we're mowing. I did replace the belt, last season, as I thought the belt may have stretched. Again, thank you. Gary

My deck belt keeps coming off the engine spindle. Is there an adjustment I can make to tighten up the belt on the spindles? I broke one of the belt keepers and replaced it recently.

No adjustment that I'm aware of. Maybe the deck belt is worn or stretched and needs to be replaced? Mine was coming off the engine pulley occasionally before I replaced it. New belt is having no problems.

Thanks man! I didn't think so either, but thought to ask since you're familiar with this mower. It's a really good one and looks easy to service so I ordered a new belt anyway. I had to replace my 18 yrs old mower when he went off to college! Thanks for your great videos, they're really helpful...keep up the good work!!!

LOL! Yes, I have a 19 yr old weed-eater/edger. I'm afraid I'll have to replace him in a couple of years too!

Did you remove the guide pins completely off one of the spindle pulleys? It looks like you did but I didn't see you do it.

I think I did on this video, but it was because one of the bolts broke when I was loosening it. Normally I'd just loosen the bolts enough to get the belt off the pulley.

I see you had the well with your bracket too I have broke two of those Husqvarna said that was a defect

Thanks for watching, Robert! The last time I welded it took care of it. But I beefed up the joint with a little extra steel. The welds on this deck are not very good from the factory.

Really like your channel, thank you! Do you have anything on repairing/replacing transmission in this tractor. Transmission in my tractor has been leaking for the past three season, my service center tells me it can't be repaired and needs to be replaced, which is expensive

Thanks for watching, Rick! You can. Lower the deck all the way down first. It's a little tight, but I've done it without removing the deck.

There is a new belt number that Husqvarna has assigned to the part. Most places will be able to cross reference it but I will give that that new part number here: 584453101. Good luck garage mechanics!

whenyou tighten the guide pins - do they self center or will they touch the pulley? I mean when you tighten them - they will be in the right position, you don't have to worry about them being to far away or close to the pulley? i just bought the set of spindles you mentioned in your spindle video - and was wondering HOWDO YOU KNOWYOU SHOULD CHANGE THEM? What are the signs they may be bad - thanks again for your videos and directions

Hi David, The guide pins will be properly spaced when you tighten the bolts. There is very little play in the bolt holes, so they will 'self align.' You can tell if your spindles are worn by removing the deck belt, then check for play in the spindle bearings by applying side-to-side force on the spindle shaft. If it moves more than a very small amount (maybe 1/32"), then the bearings are worn and the spindles should be replaced. Often the first indication is excessive noise from the spindles. Yes, I don't have an actual measurement on belt tension when engaged, but it should not be terribly tight, otherwise you just wear out the spindle bearings. If it is tight enough that it doesn't slip, it is ok.

Here’s a question for you! I have a YTA 24V48, which I bought in 2016. I’ve never had a problem until this year. When I go up an incline it will slow to a stop. The engine doesn’t seem to lose power at all. However, when I release the throttle then press it down again, it will go again for a short distance or until I get to level ground. I usually have to do that two or three times going up my driveway. Any suggestions? I was told it could be my transmission belt.

I have noticed with my tractor that if, when I disengage the blade, I let the lever kind of pop back into place, the belt will bounce out of the wire-guides around the engine pulley. If I ease the tension off the PTO lever (not too slow, just more of a controlled release) then the belt never pops off. If that isn't the problem you're having, I'd check the spring-steel belt guides on the deck that keep the belt up against the pulleys.....if they are bent away from the pulleys, the belt may be occasionally riding up the guide and coming out of a pulley. Please let me know if this doesn't help and we'll keep trying to figure it out.

@@dwcoffey This can also be a deeper problem. Since there is no way to tighten the belt, what may be going on is the deck itself is bent or the motor has shifted. Check motor bolts first, than deck pins. I had this exact same issue, when i would disengage the blade, the belt would slip half way off the drive pulley, and it would eat the belt up in seconds, when you attempted to reengage.

Hi Tanya, thanks for watching. I've done that once when I didn't properly route the belt. It's easy to route it outside of the spring-steel keepers on the pulleys....if you do that, the edge of the keeper will chew up the belt quickly. I'd say the most likely places to double-check are the wire-keepers on the engine pulley, the flat spring-steel keepers on the spindle pulleys and idlers. Also, just make sure that the belt runs free after everything is installed and reconnected. Mower off, blade disengaged and pull the belt along its travel path to make sure nothing is dragging etc. I hope this helps!

I just replaced the deck on my mower that's the same model as this, but it immediately began tearing up the new belt. How do I test the tension and adjust if needed?

Hello Denis. Thanks for all the help. Worked with my dad to replace his spindles And belt. However after putting it back together we had two issues And thought I would get your thoughts. 1. The blades turn slowly before engaging them. When turning the blades on they turn great and the grass gets cut well. They just never stop turning. 2. When stopping the mower and putting the blades to idle (although they don’t stop spinning completely) all the sudden a recurring ponding sounds comes from the blades or belt area. It’s very odd. Thank you for watching, Matthew! I'll pass your greetings on to the lizard...haha! Sounds like the belt might be a bit too tight. I have a video on adjusting the belt...it's aimed more at tightening the belt as they tend to stretch over time, but it will illustrate how to adjust the belt tension a bit. It sounds like maybe the belt has just enough tension on it when disengaged that it is still turning the spindles a bit. Not sure what to think of the pounding noise. If loosening the belt a bit doesn't fix the problem, I'd take the deck out from under the mower (see my video on that too), take the deck belt off and check both blades, spindles, etc for play. Spin the blades and listen, etc. That should tell you where the noise is coming from and figure out what needs to be fixed. Let me know if I can help.

I have a brand new Husqavarna with a 42" deck. When the blades are engaged, there is a lot of noise and rattling going on. There appears to be a lot of belt deflection and tensioner bounce. Is this the norm for these mowers. My old Troy Bilt was much quieter.

I have not, but I understand that when installing the new one, it is best to work from the rear of the tractor toward the front.

Appreciate your videos... Wondering if anyone else has experienced the issue that the factory suggested belts (1/2by106") are too big? The only belts that seem to work on my YTH22v46 are slightly smaller, 1/2" by 103". Am I the only one that's finding this?
