Repairing A Damp Caravan: Part 6 - Side window timber framing replacement and update |

Hello! Welcome back to our latest update on repairing our damp, 1997 Elddis Knightsbridge #caravan. In this episode, Jamie and Stacey both become a little despairing at the amount of work left to do as their deadline approaches. Also, the finding of a table saw changes how they would have chosen to complete other sections of the project.

Good work so far! I've used petrol before to dissolve the mastic once scraped off but recently found that brake cleaner the type from a car spares shop worked even better. Didn't damage the paint on the body either & a lot safer too! I had a 5 litre can in the garage not aerosol though!

Hi Both, the jigsaw puzzle is slowly coming together, don't scrimp on the sealant (also mastic and adhesive), not sure what you use to get a good finish on sealant but I always use a cheap finishing tool (it looks like a flat piece of plastic that folds into a triangular type tool) that removes excess sealant from the surface and leaves a perfect bead (or flat surface) and comes in different sizes dependant on the size of bead you want (or flat finish if you prefer) it is also good on both flat surface and corner type joints.

We'll be using mastic tapes on certain rails, like awning rails with SikaFlex to call them off. For other less crucial rails, we'll just use SikaFlex.

Another way to deal with mastic (possibly) might be to use a freeze-spray (or start really early in the morning) as cold could make it brittle. It works with tar-based sound-deadening in cars, anyway, so I've found.

@@TheMcNeillsonWheels thanks 😊. I'm sat here now thinking I might completely change it and put a fixed bed in, especially if I have to take the bed frames out.. which they nearly are now! The hardest thing is working out how it all comes apart - as you mentioned in one video, we're all trying to repair things in reverse, as they put the outside on last in the factory 😪. It's a big job getting bigger....hopefully the floor is solid though!

How did you feel when you found out about the damp and work that was needed to fix the caravan When we bought ours from a reputable dealer we never thought we would have any work to do to it They even delivered it for us as my husband had never pulled a 26.8 caravan before so he wanted to go for some lessons By time we came to use caravan 7mths later we were excited but what a shock we had when we found out the work that was needed after service Came away and then decided to go and look at new ones but the size of the caravan what we wanted was way out of our price range and second hand ones the inside design was not What we wanted as our had so much space After looking at around 15 second hand caravans we decided to get all work done on caravan and then when that was all done we decided to completely redesign inside New toilet sink Door cupboards redone in black and white Upholstery all replaced curtains all replaced carpets replaced In the end we spent around £8000 But now we have a caravan that we know is right Our caravan before we got it had been sited all its life so had never been on road I don't blame you for doing all work to yours at least when you know its going to last you a long time You could have spent more money buying another but could have ended up spending on it We didnt do work on. Ours but had people we knew had brilliant reputation for doing work Looking forward to seeing end result

_“How did you feel when you found out about the damp and work that was needed to fix the caravan?”_ Okay, really. We had an inkling that it was bad, as we used to lie in bed at night and hear the drips landing in the front locker. Thing is, it’s 23 years old. There are few houses that don’t have any renovation works in that time span. _“By time we came to use caravan 7mths later we were excited but what a shock we had when we found out the work that was needed after service.”_ Sorry to hear this. _“Came away and then decided to go and look at new ones but the size of the caravan what we wanted was way out of our price range and second hand ones the inside design was not what we wanted as our had so much space.”_ Yup, I can sympathise. Often, they’re all built around family holidays, so don’t work for full-timers. _“After looking at around 15 second hand caravans we decided to get all work done on caravan and then when that was all done we decided to completely redesign inside.”_ Awesome! Send pictures! _“Our caravan before we got it had been sited all its life so had never been on road.”_ This is a major problem. Caravans that don’t move for years, but then suddenly hit the road, cause the hardened mastic to break apart, allowing water in. May never have leaked on site, but the towing caused the issue. _“Looking forward to seeing end result.”_ Thanks! So are we!

It's a fair question. I'd still have liked to have repaired ours, but we may have: I - Lived in it under cover and waited until spring for fairer weather and worked incredibly hard at it to get it finished whilst living in our beautiful, canvas bell tent, complete with wood burning stove. II - Bought a 2nd, temporary caravan to live in whilst we were renovating ours. III - Took on a cheap, AirBnB for a month or longer (we hold sufficient money in the 'contingency/emergency fund' for 6 months' rent).

Even though me and Bethany have tried so hard to keep up with their education we still feel like they have missed so much.
