Repairing A Damp Caravan: Part 8 - Electrics & Ceiling Panel |

In this episode, Jamie and Stacey continue repairing their damp, 1997 #Elddis Knightsbridge caravan. Jamie gets handy with the electrical system, re-routing cables to suit the new layout, whilst Stacey generates ideas for décor, once the project is complete.
Who are we?
We’re Jamie & Stacey McNeill, two, 30-something professionals, who’d had enough of the rat race in summer 2018, when we quit our jobs and sold our house, in order to live full time in a touring caravan in Wales.
Our channel shows our journey living this way, the highs, the lows and everything else in between. We also use our platform to advocate to others, the benefits of living a lower stress, more balanced lifestyle.
We have built our KZread reputation to date on honesty and integrity - you won’t find us using ‘click bait’ titles or nudity to draw in ‘cheap views’. We’re here for the long-term to show that this way of living can be a lifelong change for you as well as us.

    Ahah! Moved to England from Italy in the late 90s. Looking for a caravan 25 years later and had no idea that Elddis was made here in County Durham where I have been living since! LOL!

    Great progress on some real time consuming fiddly bits. From my days of doing classic VW’s I know it’s often the unseen fiddly bits that take the most effort and involve the most swearing!

    They're actually 24v lights, wired through a transformer. Given that we spend most of the time on a 240v supply, it seems daft not to make use of easily available lighting. These were under counter kitchen lights.

    You may have already covered this somewhere, so apologies if that's the case - but where do the extensive (and impressive) modifications you are making to the original construction and layout of the van leave you in terms of the plated weights, and the legalities thereof, if you ever decide to take it out on the road again? The original Type Approval will no longer be of any relevance, so won't it need to be reassessed? Thanks.

  • @TheMcNeillsonWheels

    @TheMcNeillsonWheels

    With regards to the plated weights, the front end actually ended up being lighter than before. However, I do think it prudent to stick it on the weighbridge come autumn.

    @@TheMcNeillsonWheels Thanks for the reply. Have literally just watched Part 11, with Jamie doing his 'He-Man' impression at the front of the van! A very engaging documentation of an ambitious project - well done for even attempting it. As someone with at best a rudimentary knowledge of how weights, plating and the relevant laws work, I'm genuinely interested to learn the implications for both legality and stability of towing, now that the van bears little or no resemblance to what Elddis put out and had certified / type approved all those years ago. I'm sure there will be a recertification process that can be gone through, should circumstances dictate the need to tour with it again. Keep living your best lives! Thanks

    Hi Thanks for your videos I found them today. What's your advice for a guy about to reach 60 years old and thinking of full time caravan living by himself. The idea is to keep my job using the campsites around and travelling only during summer holidays. I don't have any experienceI whatsoever, I do not own a house, I'm on rent, I'm still a healthy guy but 60 is 60. Any advice will be much appreciated. Cheers

    Crikey! Okay, so firstly, age is irrelevant, providing that your physical mobility and fitness are generally sound. I say this because, with caravan living, there is some manual handling involved, like fetching and carrying water or hitching up to the tow vehicle, for example. You may find that moving between sites frequently costs you handsomely. For example, our site charges £20/night in the off season and £25/night in high season. Unless you are able to negotiate a better price, you'll find your wallet running out before your enthusiasm. You may be able to exchange your time for a free pitch. For example, you offer a camp site so many hours of your time as 'duty cover' in return for 'free' pitching. This is how most caravan site warden jobs work (though wardens are also paid for the hours worked, too). If you can find a site that would be happy to take you on, understanding that you will retain your 'day job', then you'll find enormous savings and will likely feel a lot healthier. It's certainly worth doing, though you'll need to do some homework first. Feel free to get in touch with any further questions. Jamie
