Repairing A Damp Caravan: Part 10 - Building a fixed bed and making it watertight

Hello!
In this episode, we update you on the progress we've made since last time. We've closed up the front end, refitting the roof panel and extending the join between the front GRP panel and roof panel by adding a band of aluminium to help keep the water out. We also refitted the windows, which didn't go entirely to plan. Finally, we also show you how we've built the fixed bed in the front of our caravan. It's getting super exciting now, as we really can see the finish line!
Thanks for sticking with us!

    I think most mattresses need some ventilation underneath , eg the slats on a wooden bed, that help to prevent moisture build up and mildew. I reckon you could do with some holes in the bed base board to allow a bit of air flow.

    Hi Dave, We're replicating a Divan bed design with this one. We'll ofcourse make regular observations to ensure that moisture build up isn't causing a problem. Thanks for your comment!

  • @davog1946
    @davog19463 жыл бұрын

    Only thing I’d say is that bed wants to be slats not a solid piece, reason every bed ever is slats. As gross as this sounds they sweat horribly and that’s go mouldy under there in no time. Solid effort though, I’ve just replaced a wall in mine!

  • @TheMcNeillsonWheels

    @TheMcNeillsonWheels

    Divan beds don't have slats. They do have a wicking fabric layer, which may be required or else we'll drill holes. Ways and means.

But at the door the floor under the foam is rotten 😢 I’ve now cut it out but have a hole right in front of the door and struggling to think of a way to put in new piece and fix it in place 🤔 as no supporting beams in the door way. Any ideas 💡 I was thinking cut out a bigger hole and build a frame of some kind 🤷‍♂️

    Hi Shaun, Tricky place, that one. If it's of a similar design to mine, I know that there is little there to brace from. Without having a look, it's difficult to suggest something. Is there anyone way that you could place timbers going crossways, jointed into the lengthways timbers? Good luck! J

    I had same trouble getting the middle window back in. Either side would pop in nicely but centre one was a swine(3times I've had it out). Also, do you think some vertical baton might be advisable halfway along your underbed rectangle pieces. Long span there👍

  • @TheMcNeillsonWheels

    Hello! Glad to hear that we're not alone in the window fitting issues. The battens are 45mm square and have supported 100kg in the middles, so should be okay without. We decided to go for bigger timbers as although heavier, should last longer. Thanks!

  • @TheMcNeillsonWheels

    It came down to making it strong enough, to be fair, especially as the corner steadies went through the section of floor that was rotten. Additionally, the sides of the floor that joined to the walls were also missing due to the rot. Overboarding covers up the problem but doesn't put strength back in.
