Repairing A Damp Caravan: Part 11 - Finishing off! Finally moving back into our renovated caravan!

Phew! What a journey! This episode marks the final instalment in our series on repairing our damp, 1997 Elddis Knightsbridge caravan. It's been one heck of a journey and we've learnt an awful lot along the way. It's been wonderful to have been able to share it with so many of you.
This episode, we show you how we installed LED strip lights, finished off the interior, re-fitted the windows using caravan mastic, and laid the lino floor covering.
Thanks to sticking with us - your support means the world to us!
Best wishes,
Jamie & Stacey
PS: Forgot to add the link to Alan's website - www.thomson-caravans.co.uk/ala... for an excellent method of re-fitting awning rails; Go to "Phase 2 The Front" then "Re-Sealing".

You may need a sheet on top of board for bed that stops condensation as with not having holes in board it will cause condensation on top of board causing mattress to get wet Use them in self build vans Wish I knew what they are called but can't remember

Hi Tina, I'm guessing that it is some sort of moisture wicking material? We're going to closely monitor the mattress situation and alter the design if needed. We're working on the Divan bed theory at the moment!

Great job, the caravan looks super cosy. One thing that concerns me is the bad platform! I would drill holes in it to allow ventilation to stop the mattress from sweating and becoming mouldy.

Hello Moya, thanks for you comment. We'll be monitoring the bed situation over the coming days and checking regularly for any signs of moisture build up. We're taking design inspiration from divan beds which do not have holes or slats, though the material on top of the divan bed platform may have moisture wicking properties. Will keep you all updated.

@@TheMcNeillsonWheels Only discovered the damp a few days ago, whilst we were prepping the van to go away in a few weeks. I don’t know how extensive it is, but until now, it’s been a bone dry van. Due to Covid, it hasn’t moved for nearly two years… I think I have a tame farmer I can rent some undercover space from not too far from home… and whilst I knew roughly what a damp repair entailed, watching someone go through it in detail is enormously helpful! I think I only have one window to deal with… We plan to go away as planned, and then when we get back I need to get cracking!

I agree that the awning rail is one of the biggest failure points that and the expansion joints between the GRP sections and the roof. I've recently had to repair an entire rear quarter of a six berth for a hole no bigger than a needle. Caravans of the era were pretty much stapled together and built very quickly. The few that didn't leak were definitely the minority. Keeping them clean and regularly checking joints, seals for damage goes a long way to keeping things dry.

Heya, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I must've missed your comment. Awning rails are a definite pain. It wouldn't be so bad if the flange covering the other panels were wider. Ours were only around 10mm, which is really poor.

We discovered a leak around our sky light a while ago after noticing some bowing in the front ceiling area. This led us to do a bit more investigation and find that a large part of the wooden structure in the front wall had completely rotted as a result of the leak. We have now stripped most of our front end and are working on getting out the blasted wall cabinets which of course is an absolute nightmare with them being screwed in from outside!! 😤🥴 I'm sure we'll get there in the end! Feeling a lot more optimistic about the future of our van after seeing what a wonderful job you guys have done!

Lovely to see the project. Yes as you have said being able to give full time to the repair during the lockdown must have been a great help rather than after work or at weekends. The job would have just gone on forever. Even if you had decided to scrap the van and buy another its most probable you would have had water ingress/damp in the new one. So by doing what you have dome you have a dry van redesigned as you want it.

Thanks, Diana. How do you mean, what is it like in bad weather? All caravans shake a bit in the wind and the sound of the rain on the roof can be anywhere from soothing to noisy depending on the intensity of the rainfall! Overall, they're very resilient to different weather types. We live in the UK. Our winters are cold here, but rarely below freezing for extended periods of time. We have a gas heater which keeps up warm and toasty!

Interesting question. I wouldn't be in a hurry to do another. The time lockdown gave us was a total gift this time. I also wouldn't buy new because all new caravans are designed around holidays not full-time living, which means you need to use the space very differently. I also doubt I'd ever be able to afford to buy one anyway, which is fortunate. However, if I were to do another, there's lots I'd do differently.

Hello! They weren't standard size that you'd find in a merchants. It'll make your life a lot easier if you buy a table saw. You can then rip the battens through that to get them down to spec. Hope this helps.

Great job 👏🏼 must be a relief to have it finished and enjoy the fruits from your labours 😅, the bed will be fantastic, it’s lovely to see your home personalised to you both 😍 Just one thing which may just be me but I find it difficult having music in in the background when your talking as it’s a bit distracting, it won’t be great to just hear your voices like in conversation with us. 😄 can’t wait to see your up and coming vlogs x

Thanks for your comment, Doris. Sorry about the music. We find that without it, the video feels a little flat. We reduce the volume to a level where we feel that the voices remain audible, however I edit using headphones which may provide crisper sound than your speakers are able to replicate. Just a thought. Take care, Jamie

Hello! You may find like we did, that the cupboards are also fastened with screws driven down from above, through the roof framework. This is done before fitting the outer roof skin. If you have one, a reciprocating saw fitted with a fine toothed hacksaw blade will allow you to slide the blade along, cutting any screws as you go. They're not easy to remove some times! Best of luck with it!

Hello! My wife and I are campsite wardens, which employs us during the UK summer camping season. I also work part time in a pub or other minimum wage settings seasonally. We can do this because we don't tour full time in our caravan, but travel abroad in the winter when we can. Thanks! Jamie
