Watching this to learn about Canon's remote shooting software is like drinking from a firehose. That sounds like a criticism, but in this case it's not. The EOS Utility is one of the most poorly documented pieces of software out there, but one of the most useful and powerful. Besides, the world has enough KZread videos where the presenter takes 15 minutes to make one point over and over. Thanks for not doing that! After the thirst I had developed for a thorough walkthrough of this software, a firehose was just what I wanted to quench it.

Ron, thanks for the demonstration. One thought please - i have the 5dsr and would like to view, control etc. from a cell phone as quite frankly getting down on my knee or up on a ladder to take a shot is out of by physical range. i know that canon has a wifi chip that can be used and i have one (not used yet), but do not want to use up the recording slot for the chip. could you do a video on wire tethering to a 5dsr . thanks

Can I use a wireless camera remote with this software instead of using the software's capture button?

Hi Karl, I found this article on the Canon website where some people were experiencing the same issue. Maybe it will help. They mention that it could be that the lens data is not stored in the RAW file because of certain custom settings on the camera. community.usa.canon.com/t5/Camera-Software/DPP-4-Lens-Data-problem/m-p/224260

Hello Dom1 I am in the U.S. and just getting started with Canon DPP4. I am at the point where I have the software downloaded and my camera connected and I have gone to live view and settings, etc. But my camera keeps getting disconnected for no apparent reason that I can figure out. I keep getting a pop-up message that my camera is not connected, and sure enough, it's not. Any idea what might be causing this I have a 6D and PC laptop.

HI Kate, That's a tough one. It could be that your Windows PC is disconnecting the devices automatically from the USB to save battery power. There is a way to disable this, see link below. You could try this and see how it goes. www.windowscentral.com/how-prevent-windows-10-turning-usb-devices

Do you recommend remote live view shooting to digitize 35mm slides? Focusing seems to be more precise than in-camera live view shooting. But is remote shooting overkill for this application?

If I'm being honest, I'm not 100% sure. I have never tried to digitize slides before but it does sound interesting :)

What interface cable do you use? The genuine Canon IFC-600PCU cable is only 1m long, so a longer one would be helpful.

Hi Donald, thanks for the question. I just use a cable I purchased to charge my phone. It's 2m. Here is the link however doesn't look like it's available right now but there are tons of other brands that are very similar: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07V1G27H3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

@@DomsMediaZone I did some research and concluded that any USB cable with the right plugs on the end will work, unlike a 3rd party battery or AC adaptor that can damage your camera. I found a 6' cable at a local office store that works fine!

Hi Ron. Many thanks for the very useful EOS Utility tutorial. A question please: say I'm tethered and I record a short video clip in live view mode and that, once finished recording, I want to quickly review what I just shot. It seems the only way to do this is to 1. first Close the live view window; 2. the system then prompts me to Download the clip from the camera to my pc; 3. I click ok and it then asks me to confirm the download destination folder. 4. I confirm, it downloads the clip and then to view I must 5. open the destination folder, select the file, and finally I get to view the clip. Surely there's a faster way without all these steps??! thanks greatly for any help!! cheers, John in Rome (p.s. I'm using a 90D with Eos Utility 3 on a high end DELL notebook)

Hi, thanks for the great question. I've spent about 2 hours looking for the answer as I thought surely there must be a setting or something that controls this 😅. It would be useful for me too. Unfortunately, based on what I found, when recording using the EOS Utility, it always saves the file to the memory card of the camera and you have to download it to the PC. Agreed this is not a good process and would be great if they added a quick preview option. 🙈

Man I wish I could keep going with this video; all of the buttons where you adjust the ISO etc are greyed out so that I can't. Amke any changes....I'm sure there is a single setting that I am missing preventing this, but annoying none the less. I have the 800D/t7i

Hi, To do exposures longer then 30 seconds you would need to use the Bulb mode. Here is an article about using Bulb mode: www.eos-magazine.com/articles/camera-feature/bulb-mode.html
