Remodeling My Ex-Hoarder Mansion Ep. 1

The remodel on the old farm mansion has begun. This house has been in my family since 1939 and it is in dire need of electrical updates, siding, a front porch, and a full remodel. I will be preserving as much of the original wood, layout, and style as possible while adding more modern, personal touches. This is just the beginning. We have a long project ahead of us. Thank you for watching!

Cole The Cornstar, aka Cole, is a 4th generation family farmer from Central Iowa who is the life force behind his family’s 1,700 acre farm. Cole promotes agriculture by filming his day-to-day adventures with his Dad (Daddy Cornstar) and brother (Cooper) on the farm. With a lot of help from Daddy Cornstar, Cole instills humor and education into his videos fit for both young adults and adults. Despite being 23-years old, Cole has an old-fashion work ethic with an innovative approach toward agricultural technology and practices. Cole's mission is to prove the American Dream is not dead and be a megaphone for agricultural education and innovation, from technological advances in farming equipment to conservation practices.

I love your old house. My great nephew is living and remodeling my grandpa's old house which is his great great grandfathers old home. He doesn't have as big a farm as you because grandpa gave a lot of the farm to his children to build on. My nephew is a master wood carver thanks to his paternal grandpa so he has repaired a lot of the woodwork and made beautiful new things to go in the house. Your house will be beautiful as is his. He and his wife have brought that old house back to life and this year they are adding new life to it in the form of a beautiful little girl. My grandparents would be so proud of him as I know yours are of you. Young people like you give hope to the future of our country.

If you don't want to remove the wall between the bathroom and the bedroom, you could turn the bathroom into a laundry room and the bedroom into a bathroom. But before you make any major changes you definitely should contact an architect. Just to check that your plans don't make any major problems in the long run.

April 7, 2024- I love seeing the original woodwork , it feels warm and cozy. I’d love to think that what all you tore out is in a huge building waiting to be used again, but I fear that most of it went up in smoke. It’s still good to see it again. Loved your grandfathers HOME. It feels good to me. ( and yes, I know- birds, mice, rotten-ing wood, etc. ) improvements were needed. Just mourning a bit 💔. Stay humble, Cole 🙏

My only advice would be that before you start removing walls between bedrooms you sit with an architect who can take your list of wants, needs, and desires and compare it with the current layout and space available and come up plan implement in stages. When my parents built their house they didn't use an architect and as a result the house now has a lot of quirks: the master bedroom is the smallest bedroom in the house, the width of the hallways failed to take the width of the trim work into account which prevented proper furniture placement from happening. An architect can find a way to preserve as much of the wood work and built ins as possible with maintaining the character of the house. Also, given the age of the house, I suspect the house is full of lead paint and asbestos which require special disposal procedures.

I'm not a fan of your blue countertops, a nice quartz would be great. It's both very durable and beautiful. Please, please save that kitchen floor! It is intrinsic to the age of the house and is gorgeous! Also I suggest you consult restoration experts. and do your research! Which I believe you will/are. I think (though I have limited view of kitchen as a whole) that if you take that bathroom next to the kitchen out you would have more space for a dining area. Here's a tip I heard from Bob Vila on This Old House. When you remove plaster walls, remove only the plaster first, sweep that up, then remove the sticks behind. Sticks can be burned and plaster goes wherever it goes. You need a bigger hammer and pry bar.

Hey Cole exciting times ahead of you! Suggestion. if you're going to preserve and reuse your woodwork, when you remove it, make sure you somehow label each piece so you know which room it came from and number them and wrap parts together that you'll know that this trim goes to x door or that trim goes to y window. Putting molding back can be quite a jigsaw puzzle so if they're labeled and numbered in some sort of order, it's so much easier to re-install!! I'd also like to suggest if you remove any items (like light fixtures, etc.) that you do not plan to reuse and are in good shape, please consider selling or donating to Habitat so that someone else can use it! Good luck with your remodel!

Just a reminder for any wood and trim you're planning on reusing, write on the backside of it where it goes so you can put it on the correct doorway or wall. I'm going through a remodel myself and it's made it so much easier to put back up once the walls are done. In my case, I'm just updating an old 70's house that hadn't been updated since it was built.

A painter’s 6-in-1 tool will give you a thinner pry tool for the wood trim pieces so you won’t end up leaving as big of a compression mark when you’re prying. They also work well as a probe for finding hidden nails in the trim.

When I was a kid in the 1950's, I used to hear commercials on the radio by the plasterers union because drywall was coming into use, "Demand genuine lath and plaster." They tried to stop the clock and now they no longer exist. You have some of that real vintage stuff! Enjoy your history lesson. Those floor joists are full size! If you need more that will be some custom milling. Houses today border on being flimsy. Enjoy your remodel of a real substantial house built by old timers who had their head screwed on straight.

I've remodeled a couple of houses both lathe/plaster and drywall. Word of advice. Get a fan, not a little 16 inch box fan but a 3 to 5 foot industrial fan that moves a lot of air. I know it's winter but put the fan in an open window in the room you are working. Open a couple of windows downstairs or in a room nearby for air movement. That fan will blow most of the dust right out the window and you won't have as much drifting through the house. Close as many doors as you can and put a damp towel on the floor to block the door/floor gap. That will help keep dust from entering other rooms. You are lucky in that you have radiators too. Forced air furnace would suck up dust and distribute it throughout the house.
