Being biracial, I found "Into the Spider-Verse" to be an incredibly powerful message of representation and identity through personal and superhero identity. I hope this video can highlight these ideas and continue to illustrate how wonderful this film is!

And they do it right and doesn't force it to the audience, which could risk losing the opportunity to create a multidimensional character which the audience could relate to. this movie makes comes as natural and works with the themes of identity. Because: *anyone can be spider-man*

This video perfectly sums up why this movie is so great, and also why Miles is an incredible character in the film. I like a lot of superhero movies, but this movie is one I think is a near perfect masterpiece. A lot of my friends who have never really been into Spider-Man or even superheroes in general have loved this movie too, which I think goes to show how good the team did at making a movie literally anyone can enjoy and relate to. Amazing job as usual Matt!

It's almost a reversal of "With great power comes great responsibility." From the getgo, Miles understands that stopping the collider is his responsibility. Through the story, he learns to shed his fear, believe in himself and take the leap of faith he needed to, to fullfill the great expectations he was met with: empowering himself.

I kid you not Matt, I've watched this movie about seven times now. It managed to take all of the personable, noble aspects of the Spiderman universe I love and condense them into a concise love letter to Spidey, and to finding oneself and becoming something more. Just because you can, and you owe it to yourself, everyone else, and the loved ones who brought you up along the way. Thank you for this beautiful essay. Fantastic work as always!

I think Miles works as a perfect modernization of Spider-Man. Don't get me wrong, Peter is great, but he was created to be a relatable 1960's young adult and it's difficult distance from that without changing the character completly, even when they made him a more relatable modern teen in the MCU they did it by taking elements of Miles Morales (and even a member of his supporting cast) I just believe that Miles is a much more relatable Spider-Man for younger audiences, his interest in art is more relatable, having to live up to expectations, his social ankwardness (while remaining an extrovert) and his background and identity may resonate with a different group of people.

Matt I. That‘s total bs. Spider-Man/ Peter Parker was regardless of being made in the 60‘s always relatable and will always be. The struggles from the past like money problems for example will always be a relatable topic. That‘s why he‘s so popular in the first place. Great examples are the Raimi movies which born a whole new generation of Spider-Man lovers while also being tied to many silver/Bronze Age comics elements. Also don‘t forget the Animated series, spectacular Spider-Man etc. Nothing beats the original. Morales is just in the comics a painted Parker. Nothing more and nothing less. Also when we speak of a modernized Spider-Man one doesn’t have to look far and read the ultimate Spider-Man comics. So all your points are just pretty much weak because you ignored a whole bunch of previous Spider-Man adaptions and the still on going Amazing Spider-Man series which are always on track with the current era. Do you even read comics? P.S. watch HiTopFilms on why the MCU Spidey movies are bad Spider-Man movies. ;)

Great video! This version of Miles is a trillion times better than the comics version. I love how unique he is to Peter Parker through his genuine passion for spray painting, art and music! It's beautiful. While I will always like Peter Parker more, Miles Morales is officially a character I 100% respect after that film.

I think the other Spidies contribute at least a little something other than simply the “not alone” factor. The primarily black of look Miles’s outfit could be interpreted as inspiration form Noir, while Ham and Peni showcase that there can be any kind of Spider Man or Woman, even the more unorthodox varieties.

So peter makes peter feel like spiderman again and peter helps miles become Spider-Man. And Gwen helps miles feel like her friend and miles helps Gwen to have friends again instead of pushing them back. And Prowler shows miles that with great power comes great responsibly without saying it, as Prowler used his gifts irresponsibly. And Miles father makes miles realise his potential and miles makes his father realise how much he means to him.

Yet again, another amazing video. I cut my teeth on the Ultimate line of comics when they first came out in the early 2000's, so I was alittle biased when I first saw this. As for the general (Earth 616) Marvel comics of today, I don't really click with them so I tend to keep my distance from them. I am first and foremost a DC loyalist, and due to oversaturation of MCU movies (just my preference, I know other people still enjoy them) it was going to take some persuasion to make me want to see this but, nevertheless I did, and it blew me away. Not to mention one of and probably the most important Stan Lee cameos I've ever seen brought tears to my eyes. This is a movie where representation is used correctly and naturally. Being a white man, I have a plethora of heroes who I can identify with based upon skin color alone. With this movie, I'm so glad that representation was used to tell a story and not to push an agenda or pander to a certain demographic. It was liberating seeing how representation played an intergral part of the story and how each character played their part. At the end of the day, I watch these movies because I like being told a great story, no matter who the hero is, regardless of gender, race or religion. I can only hope that CBMS, comic books, and movies in general can take a page out of Into the Spiderverse's playbook, so we can all experience more diverse material. Awesome video Mr. Draper, keep up the great work!

A lot of people took issue with the way Miles was portrayed in the comics when he was originally introduced for that reason. For example, in his earliest appearances Miles was a science nerd just like Peter. There are several key distinctions between Miles and Peter worth pointing out that are present in the movies and the comics. 1. Miles DOESN'T try to make money off his abilities when he gets his powers. His first instinct is to be horrified by what has happened to him. 2. In the comics he has two parents who both know that he is Spider-man and support him. While he initially hid the truth from them this changed rather quickly. Peter hid the truth from Aunt May for YEARS in the comics. 3. The movie introduces the idea that Miles is an artist and that this is his true passion. That's part of the reason why him using spray paint to make his costume at the end of the movie is powerful. He is using his artistic expression to craft his identity as Spider-man. Thankfully it seems that the comics are moving away from Miles being a science guy. In the current comics being published it looks like they are setting up Miles as someone who has a passion and skill for creative writing. 4. Peter never had a SUPERVILLAIN uncle. The relationship that Miles and his uncle have is something unique that Peter never had. While Aaron does DIE the circumstances are different. He does not die because Miles is being selfish in either this movie or in the comics. 5. Miles isn't really bullied and picked on like Peter was. He doesn't have a "Flash Thompson" By all accounts he isn't the "loser" at his school who everyone hates. Sure he gets anxious about fitting in with his peers but what high school kid doesn't? He also has better luck with girls and relationships than Peter really did in his high school days. Peter was always more confident as Spider-man and less confident in day to day life. For Miles it is the opposite. 6. Miles central character arc is and always has been finding confidence as a superhero and living up to the Spider-man mantle. Peter's central character arc was always more trying to balance his desire for personal happiness and success with his moral obligations to be a hero. 7. Miles isn't "Jokey" to the same extent that Peter is when he is Spider-man. This isn't to say that Miles never cracks jokes at all but when he does they are usually delivered in a different style then Peter's jokes. HONORABLE MENTION- Ganke. Peter never really had a close friend and confidant that helped him out as he was learning to be Spider-man. With that said, when Spider-man homecoming was made they basically stole the Ganke character from Miles, renamed him Ned Leeds and made him Peter Parker's best friend. This didn't do much to help people realize teh distinctions between these characters. Also I would make two additional points. First, a lot of the aspects of Miles' story are bound to feel familiar. This is a SPIDER-MAN story and a SUPERHERO story. There are already decades of Spider-man stories that have been published and only so many narrative options you can explore before they start to feel familiar. (How many times has Peter quit being Spider-man in the comics again?) Second, Miles was only introduced in 2011. Not even a full decade ago. And for most of that time he was written by one guy. He is still a young character who hasn't had several writers crafting narratives for him over multiple decades. The Peter Parker we see in the comics of the 90's is a far cry from the Peter Parker in those early comics written by Stan lee and Steve Ditko. As more and more creators get their hands on Miles I'm confident that the character will become even more distinct from Peter Parker over time.

galactic85 Well, no one argued he would be 1:1 the same but they are pretty much very very much similar. 1.well, he was aware he had the same abilities as the current Spider-Man so no, from a writers sense it wouldn’t make sense in the universe where a Spider-Man is already established. Ripping that off would be toooo obvious and straight up copy paste. 2.I‘ll give you that one 3.yeah, the movie made him better so I’m not refuting that point but mainly the comic version. 4.well, he had a Supervillain friend who was very close to him. Also peter had a pretty great relationship with Ben. (Side Note: Peter’s first real best friend Harry was a Supervillain at the end and also died not the same but still interesting)Furthermore at the end of the day his uncle ALSO dies. So regardless of the circumstances we still have a similarity. Also his rogue gallery consists mainly of Peter’s rogues. 5.one of the parts that made Peter one of the most relatable characters in the first place was literally him not fitting in! well, actually Peter could have got luck with Girls. Just remember Liz and later his actual first Girlfriend Betty brant. The only reason he rejected girls was because of his responsibilities as Spider-Man. Not because he was less confident and bad with girls in general as Parker.🤦🏼‍♂️ 6.that‘s a key problem of his character that emphasis on those critiques wanting to be like the original Spider-man! 7.he is still cracking jokes Just Like the original Spider-Man. Yes, this is a Spider-Man story and a superhero story. No, narrative‘s are not getting more difficult to choose from. Already having many Spider-Man stories published doesn’t mean you can‘t craft an original take and stories for a new character despite being a legacy character! Dick Grayson didn’t felt like Bruce Wayne and hasn’t had his stories. Punisher as the Cosmic Ghost Rider. Heck even Doc Ock who became superior Spider-Man was pretty much very different. And so much more. „Running out of stories“ is just a weak argument since original comics are still being written to this day. Comic book stories are still being written with so many new ideas despite having so many different comic books regardless of superhero stories, horror stories, sci-fi stories etc. It doesn’t matter when he was introduced. It also doesn’t matter how many writers wrote on him. He still started as a rip-off and hasn’t changed thaaat much from the beginning. Being new doesn’t legitimize being a rip-off or having a not-so-good story. 90‘s being a far cry from the Lee/Ditko era? Oh boy. You would have made a point if you would have used Dan Slotts era but this ? Come on! Your whole points are : „well they can‘t be the same just because they carry out those similarities differently“ 🤦🏼‍♂️ His stories are pretty lame with his one shot venom blasts and so many other things that would make this list even longer than it needs to because there are already pages dedicated to the Miles problem. I agree although that this Movie and the PS4 game made him an unique and great character.
