As much as I love writers like Garth Ennis and dark and dark, gritty deconstructions of super hero tropes its nice to read these stories and be reminded why Super Heroes matter

And even those guys have a bad habit of getting lost in their own darkness (see Alan Moore, Frank Miller). Much as I loved Garth's earlier stuff, his material these days is so despairing as to make me wonder for his mental health.

Funny how Garth Ennis is cited; he is the same guy who makes the most uplifting Superman story ever written despite being known for hating the super hero genre. Truly he is the Stain (the MHA character) of Comic Book writers.

Yeah, stories that focus on the real life consequences and implications of superheroes are good, but there's a point where it becomes repetitive and sorta tiring, losing all it's magic and turning it into something that may as well exist.
"Be someone's Spiderman" is the moral I took away from this video, and it's a damn good one!
It's stories like this that reminds us that why we need superheroes. Yes we see these heroes for the occasional escapism and see Spidey punch out Doc Ock, but stories like The Kid who Collects Spider Man and Spider Bite give a sense of humanity that embodies the best aspects of who and what we can be

Great backup to a great issue
This somehow became relevant since Disney banned a grieving father that asked for a Spider-man tombstone as his dead son's wish, because they don't want to preserve the "innocence and magic" of the character. And yet these Spider-Man stories dealt with loss and death of the kids who looked up to him and granted their wish.

That father should've done it without their permission. The public outcry and possible employee backlash will keep Disney from lashing out.

@@demothiguillermo2059 Well, they own the rights to the character since they bought Marvel.
Spider-man is just a timeless hero. He taught me a lot of my personal values and codes and he's the reason I became a Marvel fan!
Speaking of stories about Spider-Man helping children in need, there was this short story written by Peter David called "Leah." For context, it was written as a memorial for a friend and took inspiration from "The Little Match Girl" fairy tale by Hans Christian Anderson. The story takes place during winter and centers on a little, homeless girl named Leah, who, like Tim, is a huge Spider-Man fan, and has covered every inch of the box she sleeps in with newspaper clippings and pictures he's appeared in. Then suddenly, Spidey finds her, whisks her away on a web-swinging ride, and the two go on adventures along with the Avengers. Only to immediately cut to Leah asleep on a hospital bed. Spider-Man did find her, only it was too late; she's comatose and dying from exposure, her liver and kidney's are shutting down, and everything she was experiencing was a dying dream. The most anyone can do for her now is make her comfortable until the end. Nevertheless, Spidey stays with her as she sleeps, kisses her on the cheek goodnight, and wishes her, "Sweet dreams, Leah" The final panel is of Leah's dream, her still riding on Spider-Man's shoulders, as they and several Marvel heroes fly into the sunset, "Sweet. Sweet Dreams."

I read The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man in the book, Marvel:75 Years. I admit it without shame. It made me cry. The story made me dig Spidey even more.
Spider-Man is a perfectly designed superhero, both visually and as a character. My two year old godson is obsessed with Spidey, surely because of how cool he always looks, and I, as a 34 year old man, admire him for his selfless commitment to always doing the right thing at any cost, because doing the right thing is very very difficult.
Spider-Man is the best Marvel character (Thor will always be my personal favorite though). Whether it’s comics like the Ultimate run, Lee’s classic run, Blue, JMS’ run, some of Slott’s run and the current runs, cartoons like Spectacular Spider-Man or movies like Spider-Verse, the first two Rami films and Homecoming, Spidey will always be the most important character in comics. He is an inspiration to many ages and has taught us all “With great power, comes great responsiblity. Can’t wait for Far from Home.
I fucking love anytime Spider-Man takes a kid for a swing through the city, hits me in my feels every time
Thanks to Stan and Steve for telling us we weren't alone. 😢

Spider-bite was the literal the definition of don’t judge a book by its cover. What I thought was going to be a dumb, silly issue that introduces yet another Spider-Warrior, ended up being one of the most genuine and wholesome comic stories I’ve read in quite a while. No matter what hero Marvel tries to push as their icon *cough Captain Marvel*, Spider-Man will always be their most relatable superhero.
These stories encapsulates Parker's compassion even if the expirience is heart-wrenching to both him and the readers. But it gives some solance knowing that even the smallest kind of kindness can be as great as saving the world. If that thought doesn't melt your heart... Then you have a void where your soul is supposed to be
“And it’s all thanks to the strength of a little girl, who’s more of a superhero than I’ll ever be” and now I’m crying my eyes out.

Where’s that from
I loved the Boy who collected Spider-Man. It shows Pete as a true hero. Kind and compassionate. Another great Spider story was FN Spider Man issue 310. That issue shows several people talking about Spidey and what he means to him. Favourites moment was when Peter helped a youbg boy with his homework. The boy was caught in a robbery, but Peter let him go. Grateful, the Boy changed and went straight. Sadly, the Boy was killed by the men who ochestread the robbery and when Peter found out, he was pissed. Never make Peter Angry. Afterwards, Peter broke down. Near the end, Peter was filmed for the documentary, and he says that Spidey just wants to help as many people as possible. The story sums up Spider Man perfectly and why he has endured for do many years.

You are right. I got the titles confused my mistake. It is still s great story regardless.
Spider-Man has always been my favorite Marvel hero solely because his problems are *real* problems. It’s not some guy beating down a whole army of Nazis or a guy who deals with a huge green mean alter ego. He’s a kid that’s trying to just live and do the right thing. Rent, jobs, school, all of these are why Spider-Man has and always will be the most important hero for all ages.
A great lesson to be learned from this is that there is a difference between a story having kids as part of its target demographic and a story that feels like it was written, directed, and produced by kids.
That was a wonderful video Matt! In Rio de Janeiro, in 2008, the parents of a 3-year-old boy shot by police officers buried him using the Spider-man costume which was going to be the theme of his upcoming birthday party because he loved Spider-man so much. Also in Brazil, in 2007, another boy rescued a baby from a house on fire dressed as Spider-man. The Spider-man mythos had a significant impact on many people's lives here in Brazil!

Sitting in a bathrobe crying about Spider-Man? Sounds like my typical day!
Even though I’m older, I still wish I could be Spider-Man. Honestly Peter Parker in the original reminds me a bit of me at his age. The smarts, the bullies, the high school drama. Honestly I sometimes feel like I am behind the mask , and reading stories like these remind me why I love spider-man so much. I bet many people can feel similarly
The goal in my life is to make someone smile, knowing that they have something to cherish in their times of suffering. Spiderman is that person
I actually cried tears of joy thank you so much .
I got teary eyed near the end there, you perfectly show cased why Spider-Man is such an inspiration to so many people, both young and old. Amazing video as always, might be my favourite you've made!
When the first sentence already assures you that this will be a favourite video.
Kinda reminds me of the cancer ward scene from All Star Superman. Why can't there be more superhero comics like this.

Shazam! Power of Hope, as well.
I also made the adolescent jump to Wolverine before going back to Pete and Miles as an adult, you've done a great job outlining how important the small scale stories like these are, Spidey was never great because he fought tons of bad guys, that's just something he does, he's great because he's compassionate and stands up for more than himself, with great power... You know the rest. Here's to being more like Peter, or Miles, or whomever else, Cheers Matt!
Every Superhero has a story line that gets "done to death" , things like, the Pheonix saga, The orgin story. However I have only seen "The Boy who collects Spiderman" done in animation on the old Fox Kids show from my childhood, that story is why I still do charity work to this day.
God I feel this one. I remember always wanting to be Spiderman when I was little cuz I loved him almost like he was real. I cried watching this one too.
Spider-man is definitely a hero that grows up along with you. I found at different points in my life I identified with parts of the whole narrative of him. Your videos are amazing and it really brought tears to my eyes, keep up the great work!!
You know, as a kid, I always preferred Batman & the X-men to Spider-Man(I never even watched the Raimi movies growing up) but videos like this, as well as KaptainKristian’s video essay for IGN & Into The spider-Verse really made me look at this character in a new way & reminded me why he is so beloved even today. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks so much for making quality videos & hope to see more in the future!
“Everybody loves a hero. People line up for em, cheer em, scream their name, and years later they’ll tell how they stood in the rain for hours just to get a glimpse of the one who taught them to hold on a second longer. I believe there’s a hero in all of us. That keeps us honest, gives us strength, makes us noble, and finally allows us to die with pride. Even though sometimes, we have to be steady and give up the thing we want the most… even our dreams.” - May Parker
I cried a bit watching this, thank you for making this.
I watched this for the first time last night and I teared up. I think sometimes that perhaps Peter is the greatest superhero for his moments like this. Thank you for sharing this Matt and for reminding us what it means to be human.

If you need some tissues, I still haven't used up all mine yet either. Sometimes...you just need that reminder, don't you?
Dammit, I just commented on your Marvels video that I'm an FF guy at heart...but like so many of us, Spidey was my first love in superhero terms, ever since I first saw the Amazing Friends cartoon, and he'll always have a special place in my heart, yes? At first, I just wanted to be able to move like Spidey, to be that agile, and as a kid I would crawl up the stairs on my hands and knees and pretend that I was wall-crawling; fast-forward thirty-odd years, and it's Spidey/Peter Parker the man that I most identify with, and while the moral code of 'With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility' may truly be as much of a Curse as it is a Gift in the sense that trying to follow it is rarely easy and/or will most likely backfire in some way, it's still the first thing that pops into my head whenever some kind of moral issue or dilemma crops up, yes? (Plus, whether you're a kid or an grown-up, who wouldn't want web-shooters, eh...?!). That's why, no matter what happens to Spidey going forward on the movie front, as long as they can tap in to the sort of qualities that you identify that gets us to love Spidey so much as kids, they'll be all right, yes? (Even if none of them have quite matched Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man 2' yet for me, but that's another debate for another time...I just hope we get a Spidey/FF crossover movie one day, yes?).
Dude, this video is a masterpiece. Congratulations for the amazing work.
To paraphrase CS Lewis, one day we get too old for fairy tails, but eventually we mature enough to be old enough for them again. Spider-Man is a perfect example of this.
We are all Spider-Man and We won't back down.
Spiderman will always hold a special place in my heart.
This is why Spider Man is my second favourite superhero right behind Superman
It’s official, Spider-Man is the best superhero ever created
Wonderful story. Well done once again Matt Draper!
This video helped me realize something. Recently, I was stuck on the question of who my favorite childhood superhero was. Do I even need to say it was Spiderman? It was never the power, nor his brains (though I appreciated it when he utilized the latter) but his compassion. With young kids especially, he had an open heart I found all too lacking in the adults in my life. Thank you for reminding me, Matt!
