By far one of the strongest positives of this show was its ability to juggle so many plots and subplots at once so seamlessly. In the first episode alone were introduced to Peter, Gwen, Brock, the Conners, Sandman and Rhino, Harry, Norman, Doctor Octopus, Flash, and the Vulture all at once and still managed to rap it up under 24 minutes. A similar fear is performed later when in “Persona”, Black Cat, Chameleon, and the Black Suit all managed to fit in one episode. Many writers would fold under half as much pressure, but this show did it.

Weismann did say he had planned to do direct-to-DVD movies after the show finished its 65 episode run (mainly so because they could tell certain stories on the DVDs that they couldn’t in the show, like the Death of Gwen Stacy), so it’s not impossible. Especially considering that Sony clearly still has the rights to make animated Spider-Man movies. Also, who else wants Spectacular to cameo in an Into the Spider-Verse sequel?

Yes best spidey show ever, all the reinterpretations feel organic and earned. It works better than most spider-man media I've seen giving us the thrill of a real compelling green goblin mistery most of us never got out of any recent spidey material.

Most green goblin interpretations are convoluted mess. From the comics which killed him early on and ended up resurrecting him, to the movies which can't seem to know if he's supposed to be crazy psychopath ala Joker or cunning and evil entrepreneur. I'm not talking Ultimate Spidey while its Green Goblin was one of the better ones it completely strips away the mistery part by making him the most menacing towering beast in Spider-Man's rogue gallery it's not bad as he stay menacing and relevant toughout the whole comics but the design change is really underwhelming. Here they choose and they stick to it making him the great villain he always deserved to be with one of the best design for the character, techonology based while still campy enough and colorful to portray his Halloween themed thing he has going on for some reason. The set up for upcoming seasons was great! It really felt bad to see it cancelled.

Ugh now I'm thinking about other goblins arc from the comics who tried the mistery hook, I remember the menace story arc, it was cheap mistery. Even the original mistery around the first goblin seems underwhelming today it's old and we all know the punchline.

Good assessments. I think in general the villain has a ton of continuity baggage on him, so it gets really tough to riff on him and do an interesting spin. I think they need to rest that character for awhile again, like they did after his original death.

Too bad we couldn't have gotten at least 2 more seasons. I found season 2 a bit weaker but I would have taken anything this show had to offer over the atrocious 2 follow up animated series. What I love most is how effortlessly it blends elements from the original comics, through the following decades, the ultimate universe, and movies; whilst brilliantly adding it's own flair. It all makes a beautiful dish to be enjoyed and remembered for decades to come. But now I need a Batman Beyond series review from you lol

Is there anything good about Beyond. I had great expectations from Beyond but ended up being unanswered. It doesn't have what I like about TAS, it's all actions and skirmishes and the Terry's life's subplot wasn't any sort entertaining. I like the vibe of his choice of music, especially the one in the night club from the epusode, Ten.

I know that there were two shitty shows made after this, but I really hope they still end up making a third season like they did with Young Justice. This was just a masterpiece (besides the animation style)

Ah yes, the series that was taken from us far too soon. Not only did it have so much untapped potential left in it but its also become known as the greatest and most accurate version of Spiderman to date. Which I wholeheartedly agree with. Great video as always, Matt. Keep up the excellent work.

The ending is setting up wet spidey fan dreams from Warren to the Connors moving to Florida, Kingsley being somewhere out there and other things I won't state here. With a show which has proven it know how to do spider-man stories in a fresh way even the perspective of a clone saga seemed exciting. I'm still waiting for a new good spidey show. I heard Disney XD is ending its superhero shows slate including the most recent spider-man series. I hope they will soon produce a new line up of shows hopefully better, a new animated universe debuting by a X-Men or Fantastic Four show would be a smart move and dope as hell.

Loved this series. It did for Spider-man what Batman TAS and the original 1940’s Superman cartoons accomplished for their respective characters.

I very much agree. These are all versions that I think are permanently embedded in the minds of fans.

Really couldn't have said it better myself. This is and will likely continue to be the definitive non comic adaptation of the character. It has all the classic elements of the franchise I enjoy, with dynamic action and compelling characters and stories its a real shame it got cancelled. This was a show that really got what Spider-man is about, perfectly shown in the scene in the first Rhino episode when Spidey confronts Tombstone. Tombstone offers Spidey money for being a superhero, with the condition that all he has to do is "look the other way on occasion", with Spider-man pausing then simply stating: "I can't ever look the other way again" What a great show

Perfect example of how this show just gets Spider-Man SO right.

What I love about this show as a fan of animation and simplistic design which put the emphasis on animation, attitude and actions is that it's like grown comicbook fan discover for the first time that you don't have to look realistic or edgy (as comic art tends to be) to work and be effective. My favorite episodes from the show are the one with the Lizard early in seson one where Peter get his first photography for the bugle and the connors see that he's credited for photos of the lizard battling spider-man while Peter was nowhere to be found during the actual crisis, estranging him from the connors and their assistant Eddy Brock. This episode is the one when I knew something special was happening in this show. The season two episode with Flash's birthday is my other favorite, it serves as a thoughtfull redemption arc for the sandman! which is sweet and also gives some new depht to another bully in Peter's life : Flash and setting up the return of Venom the worst of all bullies Spidey has to face. Really thanks for this video! Love your content, stay fresh man!

Love the video but I need more love for my main man the Green Goblin. There is a guy who always manages to get the High Ground with his Goblin Glider! But seriously, I loved the plots with the Green Goblin. He had the greatest presence in the series out of all of Spidey's villains and the manipulation and twist's in relation to Harry was amazing, surprising, and engaging! I also just loved his voice and crazy style. One of the most disappointing things about the cancellation is how we never got to see his return.

YOU UNDERESTIMATE MY POWER!

Nice thing there, releasing this on the 10th anniversary of the show's premiere. This show was something special, I remember following this show as it was being made and it was one of the only times I ever got so invested to follow a TV show so fervently. It was worth it though because the way it pulled so much from Spidey's history and tied it all together into a cohesive world that kept advancing and changing, it was just thoroughly well-produced. I tried to watch some of the current Marvel cartoons and they would feel like there's no planning at all to what's going on and it's just a shame after experiencing something that had so much care and love put into it. I'm thankful for what we got but I always get sad about how much more there could have been and how this show was a victim of circumstances.

First Spider-Man Blue, and now Spectacular Spider-Man? You're absolutely spoiling me on nostalgia for some of my favourite Spidey stories, Matt. Only thing that would round it all out now is if you put out a Death of Harry Osborn video somewhere down the line. Speaking of whom, I'd say that for me the biggest gripe I personally have with Spec. Spidey is its portrayal of Harry Osborn. I feel a lot of the tragedy in his and Peter's relationship is that there is a genuine friendship between the two that makes their eventual enmity something that causes a great deal of internal turmoil for both of them. Sadly, I never really got the sense that Harry and Peter were friends in Spectacular Spidey, and although it's easily still the best interpretation of the character outside the comics, it just kinda sucks that I can't enjoy my favourite character in the mythos as I do everything else.

That would be an interesting topic! I agree that Harry isn't a super strong character here. He's also moved out of the show for awhile, which doesn't help. Just not enough time to strengthen the bond between the two.

It's a shame that we may never see these characters on the show, as I would've loved to see how they would've handled Carnage, even having Venom and Spiderman team up to take him down, especially after their tumultuous rivalry. Not to mention that they were planning on using Morbius the Living Vampire on the show, as well as involve the character Roger Kingsley even more on the show, as he might have been planned to be the HobGoblin on the show, but we will never know for sure. Even more disappointing was that Greg Weisman had plans to have Peter in college where he would grow as a character, take on new responsibilities, and even form new relationships as Greg Weisman and the writing team confirmed that they planned to have Peter and Mary Jane end up together at college, just like the comics, and develop Mary jane as a character, even more, establishing her growth from a party girl to a person who puts on a happy face in order hide her insecurities, which was exactly how the character was handled in the comics, and by the end, the two were planned to get married. It truly a shame we may never have a third season, but it is still a miracle we have this show, to begin with, as this was truly the definitive representation of Spiderman in visual media, and will always hold a special place in our hearts. Who knows maybe one day we could get a season 3 (but that's quite unlikely), despite the countless praise and constant begging for the show to return, I find it best to just appreciate the outstanding show we got in the first place, as this truly was the *Spectacular Spiderman* !

I think it was combination of Disney and Sony sure Disney bought the animated rights to spiderman but Sony owned the rights to spectacular spider man even though they couldn't make it anymore, so even if Disney wanted to continue spectacular spider man they couldn't. Still, Disney has the most blame for it

Excellent video! Just a quick specification to bring up: Spectacular was cancelled because Sony gave up the TV rights to Marvel in order to keep the movie rights so they could make the Amazing Spider-Man movies. The buyout happened not too long after and complicated things further, so I could see why those reasons get mixed up.

First, what's your source on this? Second, that doesn't contradict what I said. The TV rights went to Marvel in exchange of Sony keeping the movie rights, but Marvel would have had to pay Sony to continue Spectacular, since Sony still owned the rights to that show. So, Marvel chose to make their own show and save the money and paperwork instead.

I miss this show so much... it's really not fair.

I keep thinking of venom and Spiderman fighting, and I keep thinking of my own version of season 3.

Out of all the Spider-Man animated series that's came out, Spectacular Spider-Man has to be my all-time favorite. Reminded me alot of The Batman. Not only in character design but the fact that most fans cared for the earlier animated series of him and it was the better series all in all. It's a real shame it was cancelled when it was and was replaced by Ultimate Spider-Man.

Spectacular Spider-Man is a modern classic cartoon. Best Spidey show ever

I personally preferred the 90s Animated Series. Loved Spectacular Spider-Man though. Great show. I just grew up with the 90s series and really enjoyed it's art style and story lines more.

Ed Asner was the voice of Uncle Ben in this series, and the voice of J Jonah Jameson in the 90s series.

This is the first of your videos I've seen and I was so not ready for The Midnight to play at the end of it. I just want you to know that I'm subscribing just because of that.

The best Spider-Man TV show's have to be Spectacular Spider-Man and Spider-Man the Animated Series. Also Spectacular Spider-Man theme song has been stuck in my head since 2008

Spectacular Spider-Man should be looked as the blueprint for any Spider-Man adaptation for years to come. Anyone who wishes to write Spider-Man should at least binge-watch one of the series' arcs to really get a good grasp at how Peter is as a character.

It still hurts me to this day we never got to see peter and gwen get together because the show got cancelled

Awesome video as ever Matt :) your love for this series really shines through here much like yourself I absolutely loved this series to bits. For me, it's definitely up there with the long-running Spider-Man animated series from the 90's for me being the best on-screen adaptations of the web-head. I think of the two series's Spectecular Spidey is definitely the show I find myself going back to and revisiting time & time again. Therefore, It's such a damn shame that we'll never get a resolution to the cliffhanger that the finale of season 2 left off on :(. I know it'll never happen but here's hoping that maybe one day the show will follow in the footsteps of Young Justice and get renewed for another season keep up the stellar work as always!.

This is easily the greatest rendition of Spiderman! It’s so sad to see it end so soon and now it’s been 13 years and we’ve seen plenty of spidermen but none are as spectacular as this one!

I'm so glad I'm seeing more people who remember this show and love it. It came out when I was a college senior, and I think watching it is one of the reasons I avoided developing this weird complex with my childhood that most people my age have, where they obsess about their childhood artifacts, put it on a pedestal without thinking critically about it, and despise all forms of remakes and changes without giving it a try. Because even if I wanted to, I couldn't deny the fact that this was the BEST SPIDER-MAN I HAD EVER SEEN, even better than the movies, and waaaay better than the 90's cartoon I loved as a kid. And they did this by combining newer elements, REALLY old elements, and mixing it all up in a fresh package. My wife found the complete series on bluray got it for me two b-days ago, and it was just as amazing as I remember. Forget Firefly and Arrested Development, losing this is the greatest early cancellation of all time!

Agreed. I'm probably around the same age as you and I really hate the "What we had was SO much better! Today's stuff suck!" people have. It's just so beyond pretentious. Yeah shows like Batman TAS, X-men TAS, and Justice League/Unlimited were amazing. But there were also shows that came in the late 00s to early 10s that were just as thought provoking. Spectacular Spider-man, Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Young Justice just to name a few. All of those had rich plots and interesting characters. It's rather limiting for people to put a show up on a pedestal and expect all other shows in the same genre to imitate it rather than do their own thing. It frustrates me so much when some people praise one version to the point of blindly criticizing all the other creative versions (especially when those other works have their own strengths). I mean I was starting preschool when the original TMNT cartoon debuted. But I actually like the 2003 version more.

This is balls on a filmmaker, this is perfectly cheesy, perfectly acted, perfectly acted, perfectly edited. Everything about this scene is flawless, every film student needs to study why this scene works.

Here are some new video suggestions I have in mind: Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes (I love the MCU Avengers but I feel after watching this series twice, that these are the definitive Avengers) Young Justice (obviously another work by Weismann and also a great show) Disney Renaissance (truly Disney in its prime and truly some of my favorite Disney films in Aladdin, Mulan, Lion King, & Beauty and the Beast; also its ever changing impact on animation as a whole) Spider-Man (Sam Raimi trilogy in particular as that was critical to the success of the superhero genre for years to come) MCU (obviously Marvel's impact on the film industry and pop culture is hard to miss) Justice League/Justice League Unlimited (in my opinion the definitive Justice League) X-Men TAS (a rocking theme song and truly a great show) Archie Sonic/IDW Sonic comics (I remember reading this series a lot as a young kid and it has a lot of great moments in it and the IDW series isn't that bad either) Pixar films (particularly I want to see how you feel about The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Finding Nemo, and Coco) Lego games (particularly Star Wars:The Complete Saga, Marvel Superheroes, and the Batman series) Sequels (this is more of a analysis as to why creating a sequel for a well-known original work can be difficult and how it can be average like most films, very bad, or better than the original; examples would be Toy Story 2, The Empire Strikes Back, Incredibles 2, Shrek 2 and Spider-Man 2) Wow, this is a lot but these are some topics that I think can be very interesting for your channel. How to make the best out of the ending that we got: When it comes to the love triangle, all three know that Harry no longer has any access to Globulin Green, so after about a week or so after the funeral, Gwen might feel comfortable with breaking up with Harry and moving on with Peter. It's also possible that the symbiote was discovered and housed by Miles Warren, and Norman has no plans for returning to a life of crime after going incognito in Florida. Speaking of Florida, the Conners might finally find a cure for Max, who begins a long mental recovery. Spider-Man will always have both old and new villains to take care of, such as Scorpion, Hydro Man, and maybe even Carnage. He would also probably reveal his identity to Gwen, as she is one of few people that be can trust, and it would make their relationship a lot easier to digest for Gwen.

This was the show I watched when I was like 6 or 7 and I knew it was amazing then!

I love this show because it only focused on Spider-Man and no other hero.

YES! THIS was GREAT! And needs to be RESURRECTED! As does the computer animated version with Neil Patrick Harris as the voice of Peter Parker/Spider-Man!
