Remembering Eli Wallach, His Life & Death

Ойын-сауық

Before his death in 2014 at the age of 98, Eli Wallach was one of the most respected character actors in entertainment. After rising to prominence on Broadway, the actor had made his on-screen debut in the 1956 film Baby Doll. From there, Eli appeared in over 90 films before his death. However, the actor simply viewed appearing in movies as a way to pay the bills, and always greatly preferred acting on the stage.

Even though Eli had a preference for stage acting over acting on film, he never had a bad attitude when the cameras stopped rolling. Everyone that worked with Eli considered him to be one of the kindest actors of his day. Given that kindness has always been an uncommon trait amongst actors, Eli stood out to his coworkers. Among those that have praised Eli over the years are Arthur Miller and Clint Eastwood. Eli met Arthur Miller while acting in a film that the latter had scripted, and met Clint while appearing alongside him in 1966’s The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
Eli’s turn as Tuco, aka “the Ugly”, in Sergio Leone’s The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly has arguably gone down in history as the actor’s most memorable role. However, the actor continued working both on the stage and on the screen for many decades afterward. Eli’s final acting gig was in the short film The Train, which was released in 2015.
Eli married actress Anne Jackson in 1948, and the two remained married until Eli’s 2014 death. The two had been married for 66 years. Anne passed away two years after her husband, and their three children survived the couple. Join Facts Verse as we examine Eli Wallach’s life and death.

Wasn't he also the bandit leader in the Magnificent Seven? Anyway a great all round actor. Always gave a good performance. But I have to say his Tuco in GBU really stole the show. He was so over the top he must have had a great time. And Lee Van Cleef was no slouch either. Those two reduced Clint almost to a Straight Man.

The long happy marriage of Eli Wallach & Anne Jackson should be a template for actor/actress couples, what with those who had failed unions - Ben Affleck/Jennifer Garner, Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie, Clark Gregg/Jennifer Grey, Scarlett Johansson/Ryan Reynolds, Richard Burton/Elizabeth Taylor, Melanie Griffith/Don Johnson & Antonio Banderas, amongst others.

I probably watched The Good, The Bad and The Ugly 376 times in my life. Last month I introduced it to my son. And watching it again after so many years, I now see that Eli was the main character. Not Clint in spite of him having top billing. In this, Tuco is really the Good, Clint was the Bad, and Lee was the Ugly. Tuco was driving the story. Clint is only along for the ride as an evil double crosser. He knew that Arch Stanton's grave didn't contain the loot, he unloaded Tuco's gun. He was planning to murder him and dig up the loot himself, that is until Angel Eyes threw a monkey wrench in his plans. No more talk!
