I've just watched quite a lot of this series again. I just want to say that I appreciate how much time and expertise you gave putting together such a comprehensive review. Your blog on this is amazing as well and the scanned charts are so useful. 😁👍 There goes my credit card lol. Thank you.

Oops....sorry for your bank account... :-) I know the pain...that's the fun with watercolor, isn't it? Each brand and each pigment have their own special something. But yes...credit cards, bank accounts and piggy banks.... :-)

I’ve watched you swatch the entire line multiple times especially if I need a relaxing moment. Saw a sale on Jackson’s for all of royal talens products and knew I needed to watch this again. Such a useful group of videos. Thank you!

Thanks, Simone. You're welcome! That's really nice to hear! Everyone's advised me against making these long videos but I sure get a lot of response from people who love them because they are calming in a way. Personally, when I'm into something, I also like to take my time to "taste" whatever it is that I"m after. Especially pigments :-)

I’d like to thank you for your advice the other day, I mentioned I’d bought a set of 36 Schmincke on sale at Amazon and was disappointed, so, I contacted them and they’ve been re placed, now I can see the difference! If I hadn’t have followed your advice, I would have been under the impression that they’re not as good as everybody makes out. Thank you 🤗

Hi, thanks. Yes, they are. I had forgotten about them a little because I tested so many other brands. But when I returned to them, they immediately felt like home again and are becoming my favorite all-round go-to paint. They are bright and clear indeed!

I use the metallic for highlights. Also the sparkly ones you can mix with other colors and paint on areas where you want to capture light or a gentle shimmer. I never use them straight, just too much.

Hi Mandy! I always come back to this series of videos, and now I'm looking for a convenient black with high tinting and neutral(ish) properties. Spinel Grey is a rare one and not much can be found about it, but some recommend it as a strong, neutral black that's nice for mixing. It seems to me Lamp Black has the same characteristics, though, and both look very interesting on your swatches. By looking closer into a few other swatches I've seen (including the ones of Rembrandt catalog itself), Lamp Black seems more smooth, predictable, yet versatile, as it's used in various paints. However, I wonder how Spinel looks on its own in a painting, and how it behaves in mixes - some say it has a steel/graphite hint, and satin/gouache finish (it seems to me most blacks look a bit like that). Payne's Gray looks beautiful there as well and seems to be very strong. In the end, as much as I'd love to have many of them, I'm not quite sure if it's worth investing in an artist-grade black paint (I could pick a tube of Van Gogh's instead and invest the money on a more interesting color, haha). Yes, I'm overthinking, but those materials are quite expensive where I live so I gotta be picky. :/ I'd very much appreciate your thorough impressions and experienced watercolorist suggestions since you know both brands so well. Best regards, Lindy

Hi Lindy, the Spinel is indeed a bit more towards the graphite, I find, just a more matte tone. Concerning your deliberations whether artist grade black paint is a must, I think the only argument for it would be that the pigment concentration is higher. Also in dilutions. So if I want a certain area to be really black, I go for artist grade blacks. If it's just meant to mix, then no, I don't think I'd spend the extra buck.

You our videos are really great! Your Videos have tempted to consider putting together a Transparent, split a split primary Pallette. What would be your choice of a Transparent and light-fast split primary primary pallette?

ahhhh, c'mon, no paints named after female artists? what about janes grey? :) loved spinel black, i think it will replace my paynes grey, since i can add a bit of blue to it anytime, to push it a bit further towards the blue. and was afraid when read that raw umber is no more, and there will be umber greenish instead. looks like it is not that different from previous version, maybe just a bit more intense, which is good thing for me, since looking at the pans, it looks like i'm digging that paint with the shovel, not a paintbrush.
